Nicole Rucker in Conversation for Fat + Flour | Now Serving
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Nicole Rucker, James Beard Award-Nominated author and chef / owner of Fat + Flour, in conversation for
Fat + Flour: The Art of a Simple Bake
. Moderated by Brian McGinn, Emmy-nominated director and producer and co-creator of
Chef's Table.
Book signing and meet and greet to follow.
A fuss-free, downright delicious collection of recipes for pies, cookies, brownies, cakes, and more—from “pastry queen” (
Bon Appétit
) Nicole Rucker, chef/owner of Los Angeles’s Fat + Flour
Fat + Flour
is a celebration of the delights that abound when these two simple ingredients come together. Famed for her rustic desserts, homespun pies, and unique flavor combinations, Nicole Rucker is revered as one of America’s best bakers, and in this baking bible she shares the accessible, unfussy recipes that made her name.
From Rucker’s legendary pies—White Chocolate Banana Cream Pie! Stone Fruit Party Pie!—to cookies (Boozy Banana Snickerdoodles!), bars (Abuelita Milk Chocolate Brownies!), loaf cakes (Zucchini and Date Loaf Cake!), and much more, the book is a treasure trove of treats (including not one, not two, but five different chocolate chip cookies, six kinds of brownies, six unique apple pies, and five distinctly different banana breads).
Rucker gives readers everything they need to make bakery-quality baked goods at home—but without the fuss, in part thanks to what she calls the Cold Butter Method, a low-effort technique for melding fat and flour that produces perfect cookies and the tenderest pie dough every time. A cookbook guaranteed to take your baking to the next level.

Queer Ecology Walk LA Climate Week ~ Regrowing from the LA Fires | Griffith Park
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
**Exact location will be sent 2 days before the walk.
In the wake of so many climate dissasters impacting our communities--from the LA Fires to Hurricane Helen and beyond--it's time more than ever to reexamine our relationship with nature.
QUEER ECOLOGY
--the study of everything in nature that subverts western cultural expectations about how the world *should* work--is here to help.
The natural world does not subscribe to any particular human culture, it exists as a beautifully diverse tapestry of ways to survive and thrive--individualistic or communal; patriarchal or matriarchal; heterosexual, homosexual, or in the case of most flowers, bisexual.
We will observe, share, and learn about nature in ways that reflect our own diversity
, and connect to it on a whole new beautiful level.
For
LA Climate Week
there will be a special focus on the western cultural hierarchy and general disregarding of nature, and how that human hubris is dangerously altering the course of human survival. And of course, how we can all work to change that!
It's that connection that will show us the way forward, how we treat nature as an ally instead of an adversary, and how we mitigate the damage western culture has already done to Mother Nature. We need a future that is deeply intertwined with the nature, just like the roots of the plants below our feet.
~~
Jason Wise (aka
@jasonjourneyman
)
is a certified California naturalist, outdoor environmental educator, a native plant daddy, and prolific tree hugger with a Master's in Environmental Policy. He teaches about native and invasive plants, connected ecosystems, the ecological history of California, and how we can all leave it better.
Let's grow community together from nature.

Math. Science. Stand Up Comedy.
For centuries, these sacred disciplines have been reserved primarily for men. And honestly, that’s how it should be.
Women aren’t funny. Women aren’t smart. And women certainly should not get on stage and be either of those things.
Which is exactly why we’ve decided to do it.
On April 13th, we’re bringing you a comedy lineup made up entirely of female scientists and engineers.
No diversity. No equity. No inclusion.
The way comedy was meant to be.
(Figure 1: a “bar chart” of the correlation between science and women)
We may not bring the “masculine energy” Musk and Zuck desire for the corporate world, but we do bring jokes, which are more, dare we say, ~integral~ to the comedy equation.
So tighten your lab goggles*, update your Slack status to ROFL** and She-EO your way down to the Lyric Hyperion to come hang out with LA’s funniest STEMinists.
*Lab goggles NOT required for show entry.
**Due to the limited capacity of the venue, there will not be room for any actual ROFLing.

Apr 15, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Join us for Introduction to Blending, a class for beginners of the craft, focused on learning how to blend with aromatic materials and balance a formula. Perfume-lovers and burgeoning olfactory artists have the opportunity to jump right into making their desired scent-dreams into reality with access to the hundreds of aromatic materials in the IAO labspace.
The class will begin with a quick primer to the world of aromatic materials: synthetics vs. naturals, top/middle/base notes, and dilutions. Participants will be guided through the process of setting up a workstation and how to write a perfume formula, with proportions and balance in mind.
The second portion of the class will be the open exploration of the IAO Organ by all participants. After making individual selections, we will get to blending! With Julianne Lee guiding the class, each participant will learn to make bold changes, subtle refinements, and expand their final formula into a small spray vial to take home.
Topics covered:
+ A quick primer on perfumery and aromatic materials: synthetics vs. naturals, top/middle/base notes, dilutions
+ Exploring the IAO’s full organ of 300+ materials
+ Selecting and working with 5 materials of your choice
+ Introduction to setting up your blending workstation
+ Introduction to composing and refining a perfume formula
Take-Aways:
Participants will spend several hours blending with 5 materials, and leave with a knowledge of the basics of perfume blending, their five materials (in ⅝ dram vials), and a small first trial in a spray vial.
Important Notes
Materials
Materials are included in the sign-up cost, and provided by the IAO during class.

Robert Downey Sr.'s GREASER'S PALACE (1973) | Philosophical Research Society
Apr 17, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
“
Greaser’s Palace
is a complete embarrassment. Any filmmaker worth his salt would be embarrassed to have made that film and it’s a work of a genius, a masterpiece…Like Fellini meets The Marx Brothers on a very low budget.” - Alan Arkin
“An extraordinary American vision of something or other…[a film] with no eye on the marketplace whatsoever.” - Jonathan Demme
“An incorrigibly irreverent vision of the universe. A mixture of audacity, rebellion, wild imagination, and runaway chaos. Writer-director Robert Downey is blessed with a gift for the outrageous that no other filmmaker touches.” - Newsweek
Behold
GREASER’S PALACE
(1973), legendary underground filmmaker
Robert Downey, Sr.’
s (
PUTNEY SWOPE, POUND
)
stoney, languidly zany and lysergic Western
!
GREASER’S
finds Downey, Sr. (“a prince”) at his most trippy, pastoral, and introspective – all qualities that blend with his anarchic style to produce a most lionhearted work.
Imagine
El Topo
meets
Life of Brian
and…well, you’re still nowhere close to what adds up to one of the weirdest Westerns, and religious allegories, of the 70s.
Dig this: we open on a dusty desert town ruled over by one Seaweedhead Greaser (
Albert Henderson
, looking quite a lot like Robert Altman) – a tyrannical, bowel-blocked baron who keeps his mother and his favorite mariachi band in cages, collects taxes from the oddball locals, and runs the titular saloon. One fateful day, Jesse (
Allan Arbus
of
M*A*S*H*
fame), a modest and mysterious young man sporting a 1940s Zoot suit, parachutes into a nearby field, stirring the curiosity of the townsfolk. He comes bearing warning of a demon, named (ready?) Bingo Gas Station Motel Cheeseburger With A Side Of Aircraft Noise And You’ll Be Gary Indiana, who stalks the town, but he’s a man on a mission.
With “the boogie on his fingers and the hubba-hubba in his soul,” he’s on his way to Jerusalem to become a star – "It's written," he says, "that the agent Morris awaits me." Along the way he amasses a bit of a following when he performs a string of miracles – somersaulting on water, raising Greaser’s dimwitted son from the dead with his trademark phrase “If ya feel, ya heal,” curing a man on crutches who promptly falls to the ground, shouting “It’s a miracle! I can crawl!,” and wowing with a nightclub act punctuated by stigmata-soaked jazz hands. He encounters a peculiar cast of characters as he goes, played by the likes of
Toni Basil
and
Hervé Villachaize
, before learning of his intended fate from a bed sheet and bowler hat sporting holy ghost. As it goes with saviors, it’s not long until the locals turn on him and, well...
Armed with his trademark platoon of offbeat character actors and willing amateurs mixed together in a lunatic stew, Downey’s weaves his weirdo Western New Testament allegory, gliding along with its own unique cadence complete with graceful extended takes, fuzzy arcs and the fearless subversion of audience norms.
Subversive, silly, and (potentially?) profound, Greaser’s Palace is a one-of-a-kind oddity that only Downey could deliver.
Special thanks to Bret Berg of American Genre Film Archive.
Dir. Robert Downey, 1973, 91 mins, Unrated (Adult Audiences Only), Color, English, Digital.
