Wild Honey Backyard Shows Present Amy Rigby/Special Guest Kristi Callan | Wild Honey Foundation Backyard Amphitheatre
Apr 20, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
For our first Wild Honey Backyard show of 2025, we so happy to have our friend Amy Rigby back to play songs from her new record and select tunes from her incredible catalog of songs! Music begins at 4pm. Doors at 330. Tickets are $20 for seated GA and $40 with unlimited food and non-alcoholic beverages. Plenty of street parking.
Amy Rigby has established herself one of America’s enduring underground/cult/indie artists, combining the insight and humor of country and folk songwriting with classic rock craftsmanship and punk DIY spirit. Raised in Pittsburgh, schooled in late 70s lower Manhattan, she formed pre-Americana country band Last Roundup and Richard Hell’s favorite girl group the Shams in NYC's East Village before launching a solo career with 90s classic album
Diary Of A Mod Housewife
.
Amy’s honest, kinetic songwriting has earned her praise from critics (“pithy wisdom, acerbic pen and sterling American guitar classicism” MOJO) and other artists: “Think Randy Newman and Loudon Wainwright, at their best,” says Steve Earle. Her songs have been covered by Laura Cantrell, Ronnie Spector and John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. Her 2019 memoir
Girl To City
was called “an instant classic” by The Big Takeover. “You can smell the damp, see the clothes, hear the guitars!” says Goldmine.
New album
Hang In There With Me
(Tapete) is eleven up to the minute songs written by Amy and recorded by husband Wreckless Eric.
Hang In There With Me
is a bracing look at life inside the vortex of the last few years. Mortality, aging and youthful missteps refracted through Amy’s insightful lyricism emerge not wistful but resolute —even triumphant.
Like some people turn to the moon and stars for inspiration, Amy Rigby looks to creative heroes like Bob Dylan and Mike Leigh. She finds poetry in haircuts, live chat boxes, bartending, and bookselling. Her music is the sound of everyday people getting by, just like the country artists she loved and learned to write songs from.
Amy spent Autumn 2024 touring the US and UK and looks forward to a few more US shows , including kicking off this year's Wild Honey Backyard series in Los Angeles on Sunday April 20th.
Praise for
Hang In There With Me
:
“…a triumph of wit, guts and perseverance over the forces of death, chaos, passing time and worldly misfortune.” —Shindig
“…a rollercoaster ride of a record, full of off-the-wall lyrics, angst and humour amid jagged guitars, thumping drums and electronica yet with a melodic, poppy underswirl. —Record Collector
“…still one of the true masters of her craft.” —No Depression
“Nearly 30 years after the landmark
Diary Of A Mod Housewife
, Rigby’s ingenuity, pensiveness, and drollery are as intact as ever.” —ArtsFuse
“
Hang In There With Me
is an absolute masterpiece, a career best, a stand-out within and outside its genre.” —Louder Than War

International Poetry Film Festival, Los Angeles, 2025: Opening Night | Beyond Baroque
Apr 18, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Beyond Baroque unveils the fourth season of the International Poetry Film Festival, Los Angeles, with a special opening night event that explores the intersection of poetry and cinema. The evening centers on
Poetry Goes to the Movies
, an anthology edited by Suzanne Lummis, and published under Beyond Baroque Books' Pacific Coast Poetry Series imprint, which delves into the relationship between the two art forms. The conversation brings together a panel of filmmakers and poets whose work is at the forefront of the conversation on how poetry translates to the screen, set in the heart of the world’s entertainment hub.
Following the panel, the opening night screening will showcase five standout films from this year’s official selection, each based on a poem. The full lineup of films will be presented the next day, Saturday, April 19, as part of the festival’s broader exploration of the vibrant fusion of poetry and cinema.
Ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are required while inside our center.
Event attendees are expected to behave in a respectful and considerate manner while in our space. Beyond Baroque reserves the right to remove individuals from our events, virtual or otherwise, if they are not respecting the space, fellow attendees, or performers.

Chöd: Cutting Through with Isaiah Mitchell and friends | Philosophical Research Society
Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Dharma Art Productions Presents:
Chöd: Cutting Through with Isaiah Mitchell and friends – Live Music + Psychedelic Artwork + Guided Meditation
Enter the charnel ground and cut through the demons of ego-clinging with a live avant-garde electric guitar performance by
Isaiah Mitchell
(Earthless), featuring original animated artwork by
Arik Moonhawk Roper
and guided meditation by
Doc Kelley
(Psychedelic Sangha). We will also be debuting some new visuals by artist
Yosuh Jones
.
Chöd “to sever, to cut” is a Tibetan meditation practice, first developed by the eleventh-century yoginī Machig Labdrön, that aims to cut through the demons of hindrance and obscuration that block our realization of our true nature. The practitioner of Chöd seeks to utilize the power of fear to cut through ego-clinging. Machig Labdrön writes, “… [T]here is no greater devil than this present ego-clinging, and because of this all the devils will rear their ugly heads as long as one has not severed this clinging to ego.”
Join us for this immersive Dharma Art experience in the auditorium at PRS!
BIOS
Arik Moonhawk Roper
attended the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1991-1995 specializing in cartooning, illustration, and screen printing. He has since developed a devoted following creating seminal record covers and screenprint posters for a wide variety of bands including rock and metal legends such as Earth, Sunn O))), Sleep, Howlin' Rain, High on Fire, The Black Crowes, Kvelertak, Cathedral, Astra, Earthless, and Windhand among many others. His influences include diverse artists and styles ranging from comic and fantasy art to graphic design and classic illustration. Roper’s work encompasses a diverse field of design and distinct style, ranging from black and white illustration, to meticulous lettering and logo design, to rich abstract psychedelic color and landscapes that often seem to exist in their own universe. The imagery springs from the depths of a fertile imagination, invoking psychedelic visions, ancient dreams, and idyllic natural environments. With an interest in mythology, consciousness, psychology, religion and other timeless subjects, Roper mixes the light and the dark within his art to reveal imagery which is at once strangely unique, distantly familiar and always soaked with an earnestly fantastic aesthetic.
His book, Mushroom Magick (Abrams, 2009), is a vividly surreal collection of exotic fungal species from around the world. His art has also appeared in books such as De Gotham City a Metropolis by French Paper Art Club, Juxtapoz New Contemporaries, Revisionaries: A Decade of Art in Tokion, Appendix N: The Eldritch Root son Dungeons & Dragons, and Taschen's Plant Magick. His collected art book Vision of the Hawk: The Art of Arik Moonhawk Roper was published by Strange Attractor Press in 2023.

Isaiah Mitchell
is a guitar player based in San Diego, California and has been playing professionally for 25 years. His band Earthless has toured the world many times over during this time. Isaiah has been involved in Buddhist and Hindu teachings since he was a teenager and has found that bringing the insights from these books into his guitar playing brings a state of awareness much like the meditative states one experiences in silent meditation. This is the focus point of what he does while playing. How close can we get into the present moment and touch the divine and express the feelings within outwardly with sonic sounds? Music is painting in the air, a journey to show us who we are and what we are capable of. And to help others on their journey. All is One and feeling this it it’s completeness is the goal.
Doc Kelley
teaches Buddhism and Asian religion at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School University in New York City. He is also the founder of Psychedelic Sangha; a non-sectarian and non-traditional spiritual community for Psychedelic Buddhists and Buddhistic Psychonauts. He earned an M.A. in Buddhist Studies and a Ph.D. in Religion at Columbia University where he studied under Dr. Robert A. F. Thurman.

*Discounted festival passes to all 4 programs available. Click for full fest listings and info*
This April 20th...
Toon In! Turn On! Drop Out!
and join us for
Los Angeles's first all-vintage festival of far out, beautiful & bizarro animation:
THE ANIMATION FREAKOUT HANGOUT at PRS
–
featuring hand plucked programs by some of LA's raddest cultural curators, including
EXP TV
, Animation Breakdown,
Whammy! Analog
, and
Cathode Cinema
!
With its ability to create mindblowing new realities and visualize our limitless imaginations, nowhere is the inherently magical nature of cinema more powerfully distilled than in the realm of animation.
On the 20th of April, The Philosophical Research Society's
7th House
is proud to host a truly one-of-a-kind afternoon to evening hangout, joining together with some special friends to serve up a mindmelting stew of some of the trippiest, most transcendentally beautiful, riotously bizarre and third-eye-opening animation from around the globe – a veritable vintage smorgasbord for the eyes n’ ears!
PSYCHEDELIC CELLULOID: Awesome Animated Oddities on 16mm!
7th House and
Animation Breakdown
are excited and honored to host
a
very
special program of mindblowing, rare animated films on 16mm
– lovingly handpicked from an incredible private collection of prints!
Featuring a selection of cult classics, long lost Oscar nominees, demented “educational” (how?!) films, and trippydippy deep cuts (not on Letterboxd!) from around the globe – many of these films cannot be seen online and have never been on home media…you’ll just have to come experience them for yourself!
Long before the age of YouTube and Vimeo,
16mm was where it was at if you wanted to see imaginative and far out animation
. Given their way-out nature, labor-intensive creation, and counterculture appeal, short films were the domain of psychedelic and experimental animated films – films that, despite their runtime, were often m
ore immersive, ingenious, and adventurous than any feature film could ever be.
Screening in film festivals, underground cinemas, on college campuses, and before midnight movies, these films allowed their creators to bring their singular visions to life, projecting their imaginations on screen for a hungry, curious audience.
A trip back to the underground animation fests of yore, this one-of-a-kind program
has been curated from cinematographer (
The Lost Record
) and cinephile
Eric Cheevers
’ impeccable collection of beautiful and bizarre 16mm films. From oddball educational films to cult classic features to the rare and rad animation screening in this program, Eric has amassed a treasure trove of celluloid goodies and we’re honored to have been able to raid his stash to bring these rare, amazing gems to you for one night only!
Featuring everything from National Film Board of Canada gems to Yugoslavian cut-out animation, weird & wonderful claymation to history's most counterproductive (ha!) anti-drug PSA, a
throughly trippy
short by Bill Melendez of Peanuts fame to a cult classic Zappa toon – this is a program that must be seen to be believed…and
can only be seen here and now
!
