Longform Improv: Middle School and Up | The Lab

In this 6 week class, students with some improv background will learn longform improvisation fundamentals, similar to those taught in our adult classes. Our teaching approach and philosophy centers on Chicago/NYC style longform scene improvisation, which focuses on character development, collaborative agreement and world-building. Some of the most famous actors and comedians you see today were taught longform improvisation, including main characters in Ted Lasso, 30Rock, The Office, MST3K and others. In this six-week class we will focus on a blend of introductory concepts (learning the foundations of improvised scene work through Yes, And ) and building on general agreement to create rich scenes. Students will have the ability to collaborate with others in a safe, fun environment with the goal of ending the class with the ability to partner in an improvised scene and build a 20 minute show from a single suggestion. All students should be comfortable with in-class participation and taking feedback from a director and coach. Class Schedule Classes will be held every Wednesday beginning10/30 through 12/4 , 5:15-6:30pm. An optional show will be held after the last class, date TBA. In conjunction with the exhibition 芸[Gei>: The Beauty of Ephemeral and Eternal held at Contemporary Craft, we present you with a performance that will introduce you to the elegance of traditional Japanese music. This one-hour Craft-in-Concert program will star Kanoko Kamata on the 三味線 , and Devon Osamu-Tipp on the 尺八. Between pieces of music, Kanoko and Devon will talk about the instruments they play, give an overview of the history of Japanese traditional music, and provide context to the musical works. About the Musicians 鎌田華乃子 Kanoko Kamata Kanoko has been interested in social and environmental issues since childhood, but after 11 years of working for a company, she realized the importance of civil society to improve people's lives, and studied abroad at the Harvard Kennedy School of Public Administration, completing the Master of Public Administration program. In January 2014, she and her friends established the nonprofit organization Community Organizing Japan (COJ), and are working to spread the practice of community organizing throughout the country through workshops and coaching. She is also involved in gender and sexual violence prevention movements. She is currently a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. Her late grandmother was a singer and Shamisen player of 民謡 (Japanese folk songs). Kanoko's shamisen practice encompasses both the Ikuta ryu (Kyoto style) and Yamada ryu (Tokyo/Edo style) traditions of music. Devon Osamu-Tipp Devon (they/them) draws influence from their Japanese roots, experiences as a jeweler and painter, improvisations with plants, and studies of gagaku and hogaku. Their music focuses on rhythmic and timbral transmutation of cyclical materials as a way of reflecting on their past. Their compositions have been performed in the US, Europe, Australia, China, and Japan. They have presented their research on global art music at conferences and universities in the US, Europe, and Japan. Their research on contemporary Japanese music has been published in the Czech peer reviewed journal Ziva Hubda, and their flute works are published by Tetractys publishing in the UK. About our Curriculum Our teaching approach and philosophy centers on Chicago/NYC style longform scene improvisation, which focuses on character development, collaborative agreement and world-building similar to what is used in shows like This Week Sucked and Breeders. About our Curriculum Our mission is to provide committed performers with a deep interest in comedy and collaboration an opportunity to rehearse and perform with like-minded peers. Our coaches and teachers are working comedians who have trained at Second City, Improv Olympic and Upright Citizen Brigade and beyond. The coached ensemble format is ideal for players that have taken improv classes and are interested in diving deeper into longform. A minimum of 6 players will be required to enroll and no more than 10 performers will be assigned to the ensemble. This course is a two hour, ten-week, coached Ensemble and includes three class performances. Advanced Improvisers will learn JTS BROWN: More of an improv philosophy than an improv form , The JTS Brown is known for its fluid and dream-like logic and use of physical transformations within and between scenes. This session will combine longform classroom instruction with stage time over a 10-12 week period. Rehearsal Schedule The Ensemble class will meet Thursdays 2/13-4/24 (ten total classes, with 2/27 off) from 7:00-9:00. There will be a class show every month in Febuary, March, and April. Student Profile and Info Prospective troupe members should know the fundamentals of improv and demonstrate good listening and collaboration skills. Students should have previously compleated at least three levels of improv instruction at The Lab. Coach for this session: Michael Jastroch Michael Jastroch is an acclaimed comedic actor, writer and improv instructor, formerly based out of Austin, TX and new to Philadelphia! As one of the founders of ColdTowne Theater and a member of the seminal improv groups ColdTowne and the Frank Mills, Michael has won awards for his work, including “Best Comedy Group ” in the Austin Chronicle and the B. Iden Payne award for “Outstanding Improv Ensemble.” His improv podcast, Victrola! was named one of Austin’s “Best Comedy Podcasts” and nominated by Austin Chronicle readers as one of the city’s best comedy groups. Michael has taught improv comedy for the last fifteen years, and has been nominated and won “Best Improv Teacher” and “Best Improv Coach” a whole bunch. He’s taught his improv workshops all over the country, including at the Magnet Theater in NYC, the Oberlin College Improv Festival, The Oklahoma Improv Festival, the Phoenix Improv Festival, The Dallas Comedy Fest, The Alaska State Improv Fest, and at the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival in Chapel Hill.

The best way to reserve tickets is by selecting a team captain and having them be in charge of tickets for ALL team members.
