Join us in the gallery for an introduction to the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, conducted by Yoko Motoyama. In conjunction with the exhibition 芸[Gei>: The Beauty of Ephemeral and Eternal held at Contemporary Craft, we present you with a talk and demonstration of the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. In this one-hour program, experienced tea practitioner Yoko Motoyama will introduce us to the history, beauty, and philosophy of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Admission is free, please consider donating to support the sustainability of our public programs. About the Japanese Tea Ceremony The Japanese Tea Ceremony is deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism, so talking about tea practice requires an introduction of Zen. There are four values instilled by Murata Juko, with Sen no Rikyu building upon it later on in 16th century. They are: Harmony 和 — In the rite of tea, this is represented by which utensils are used and how the space is arranged.Respect 敬 — Mutual respect is expected from both the host and the guests.Purity 清 — This is shown in the cleanliness of the space and the utensils used. The simple act of cleaning the space and the utensils can also help prepare one’s heart for the ceremony.Tranquility 寂 — This state of calm can be attained by working to achieve the first three values.About Yoko Motoyama Yoko Motoyama began her study of the tea ceremony discipline at the age of 15. She took lessons on and off at her home town and in Tokyo, where she lived before moving to the US. She was certified as a junior instructor in the Urasenke School, one of the three main schools of Japanese tea ceremony. Improv Intensive - The Inner Game of Improv | The Lab

Sep 10, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Butler
Arts
Theater
The Inner Game of Improv This class is a four-week advanced intensive intended for improvisers who have taken at least three prior improv classes. Most performers have a little voice in the back of their heads analyzing and judging the moves they’re making as if they have a terrible little improv teacher perched on their shoulder telling them what to do (best case) or berating them for being terrible at improv (worst case). This is the experience of “being in your head,” bringing the analytical/problem-solving mind to bear in situations where it hinders peak performance - what athletes call choking. Improv scenes are not problems that need to be analyzed and solved but rather experiences to be had. The more fully present and invested we are in them, the richer and more memorable they’ll be. Through a series of physical and mental exercises in this four-week course, students will develop mindfulness practices that will help them turn down the volume on their inner critic, become more attuned to the imaginary worlds they’re creating on stage, and be more active, present, and playful in their scenes. There is room for 10 students total, and we will need at least 6 students signed up for the class to make. Class Schedule Classes will be held every Tuesday beginning 9/10 through 10/1, for an extra long workshop session of two hours each, 6-8 pm. Student Information Students are eligible to attend shows during their active session for free; available tickets are released at 10 min prior to showtime. I nstructor: Michael Jastroch is an acclaimed comedic actor, writer and improv instructor, formerly based out of Austin, TX and new to Philadelphia! As one of the founders of ColdTowne Theater and a member of the seminal improv groups ColdTowne and the Frank Mills, Michael has won awards for his work, including “Best Comedy Group ” in the Austin Chronicle and the B. Iden Payne award for “Outstanding Improv Ensemble.” His improv podcast, Victrola! was named one of Austin’s “Best Comedy Podcasts” and nominated by Austin Chronicle readers as one of the city’s best comedy groups. Michael has taught improv comedy for the last fifteen years, and has been nominated and won “Best Improv Teacher” and “Best Improv Coach” a whole bunch.
