"The Flit Gun Gag" | Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health AND Online

Exeter
Arts
Literary Arts
About the SeminarToxicity is a bad gag that goes by way of going wrong. The “Flit Gun Gag” names this process wherein the frivolity of a twentieth century’s “hyperaestheticized world” (Ngai) comes to mediate the dilated destructions of “slow violence” (Nixon). Drawing Michelle Murphy’s environmental theory of “chemical regimes of living” into dialogue with both “new modernist studies” and Mel Y Chen’s calls to “destabilize where the toxic and its affects can be located”, this seminar attends to the remarkable role of the world’s first mass-produced domestic bug-killer—Standard Oil’s FLIT® Gun, first marketed in 1923—as a comedic prop throughout the long mid-century (c. 1920s-1960s). Moving with an intoxicated cast—including Harpo Marx, Dr Seuss, Butterfly McQueen, Donald Duck, Ernest Hemingway, the Cowardly Lion, Betty Boop, Gustav Metzger, Donkey Kong, and many more—the Flit Gun Gag explicates some of the ways in which the petrochemical dreamworlds of the twentieth century’s everyday aesthetics intensify prolonged catastrophes of slow violence while underlining the power of frivolity to inspire collective action. Experience an enchanting evening at our Valentine's Candlelight Concert where the flickering glow of candles sets the stage for a captivating musical journey. Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of classical music as we present a selection of exquisite masterpieces. Feel the delicate melancholy of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, as its haunting melody resonates through the air. Let the gentle raindrop-like notes of Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude transport you to a world of introspection and tranquillity. This event is perfect for couples looking to celebrate their love, friends wanting to share a memorable experience, or if you're simply looking to appreciate the power of music.
