About
Ginseng Roots
From the celebrated author of
Blankets
and
Habibi
comes a new graphic memoir exploring the class divide, childhood labor, family, and our globalized world—all centered on Wisconsin's ginseng farming industry.
“A sweeping story, gorgeously drawn and beautifully told — this is Craig Thompson’s masterpiece.” —Joe Sacco, author of
Palestine
and
Paying the Land
When
Blankets
first published in 2003, Craig Thompson's seminal memoir about first love and faith lost in rural Wisconsin
debuted to rapturous acclaim. The winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, it is to this day considered one of the all-time great works of graphic storytelling. Now, in Craig's long-awaited return to the autobiographical form, comes the story that
Blankets
left out.
Ginseng Roots
follows Craig and his siblings, who spent the summers of their youth weeding and harvesting rows of coveted American ginseng on rural Wisconsin farms for one dollar an hour. In his trademark breathtaking pen-and-ink work, Craig interweaves this lost youth with the 300-year-old history of the global ginseng trade and the many lives it has tied together—from ginseng hunters in ancient China, to industrial farmers and migrant harvesters in the American Midwest, to his own family still grappling with the aftershocks of the bitter past.
Stretching from Marathon, Wisconsin, to Northeast China,
Ginseng Roots
charts the rise of industrial agriculture, the decline of American labor, and the search for a sense of home in a rapidly changing world.

Nature’s Memory: Behind the Scenes at the World’s Natural History Museums | Main Lecture Theatre, Department Of Zoology
May 6, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Far less than 1% of all collections are on display in the world’s natural history museums, and they consistently top the polls for the most popular tourist attractions. Yet we don’t often stop to think about what they tell us about our world, how crucial they might yet be to saving life on earth, or their role in honestly reframing social histories. What is the science is being done behind the scenes? What is chosen for display and why? Who collected it? What has been left out? Can they tell us new stories for the 21st century?
Nature’s Memory
is the first book to explore both the scientific and social relevance of the world’s natural history museums while offering an illuminating insider’s guide to visiting them.
Along the way, there are many surprises, such as Dippy isn’t what you think. He/she is made up of bones from at least of six different dinosaurs and has the wrong head. In fact, we don’t actually know for sure what a
Diplodocus
head really looks like.
Join Jack Ashby, award-winning author and Assistant Director of the University Museum of Zoology in Cambridge, and Professor Rebecca Kilner FRS, Head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge for a conversation about the stories in the new book. After the talk there will be a chance to explore the Museum’s galleries and to buy a signed copy of
Nature’s Memory: Behind the Scenes at the World’s Natural History Museums

About
The Eyes and the Impossible
Johannes, a free dog, lives in an urban park by the sea. His job is to be the Eyes—to see everything that happens within the park and report back to the park’s elders, three ancient Bison. His friends—a seagull, a raccoon, a squirrel, and a pelican—work with him as the Assistant Eyes, observing the humans and other animals who share the park and making sure the Equilibrium is in balance.
But changes are afoot. More humans, including Trouble Travelers, arrive in the park. A new building, containing mysterious and hypnotic rectangles, goes up. And then there are the goats—an actual
boatload
of goats—who appear, along with a shocking revelation that changes Johannes’s view of the world.
A story about friendship, beauty, liberation, and running very,
very
fast,
The Eyes and the Impossible
will make readers of all ages see the world around them in a wholly new way.

VENUE HIGHLIGHT
Originally established in 1855 as the Queens Hotel, the establishment plated a vital role in the social and economic life of the community.
Over the years, it hosted distinguished guests, served as a venue for important events, and provided a welcoming retreat for travelers. As Hespeler evolved and the hospitality industry changed, the Queens Hotel underwent renovations and adaptations to meet the needs of a modernizing society. Eventually, in response to shifting consumer preferences and market demands, the decision was made to rebrand the building as Ernie's.
Named in homage to a beloved figure in the community at the time, Ernie's embraced the legacy of the Queens Hotel, while ushering in a new era of dining and entertainment. With its cozy atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and commitment to exceptional service, Ernie's quickly became a beloved institution in Hespeler Village. Throughout its history since then, Ernie's has adapted to culinary trends, while continuing to maintain its welcoming atmosphere and sense of community.
WHAT IS ERNIE'S TODAY?
Today, Ernie's stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Queens Hotel, and the entrepreneurial spirit that has shaped Hespeler's history. It continues to remain a cherished destination for locals and out-of-town visitors alike; offering a taste of the past, blended seemlessly with the comforts of the present.
We welcome you to come to experience Ernie's for yourself, so you can see why Ernie's is considered a pillar at the heart of the Hespeler Village community.

Robots and the Search for Universal Intelligence
The DAAD-University of Cambridge Research Hub for German Studies is proud to present the sixth in an annual series of lectures in conjunction with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) presenting the work of their Leibniz Prize winners.
The Leibniz Prizes are the highest distinction in German academic life, and we are delighted to welcome Professor Sami Haddadin, who will be giving a lecture on “Robots and the Search for Universal Intelligence: How Machines Learn to Move, Think, and Adapt” on 8 May, 5.30pm, in the McCrum Lecture Theatre at Corpus Christi College.
Robots are becoming an integral part of our world, with exponential growth in both their numbers and capabilities over the past five years. From manufacturing to surgery to household helpers, robots are transforming industries. However, one critical piece is still missing: a true robot brain.
In this talk, Professor Haddadin will explore efforts to develop Universal Physical and Embodied Intelligence - an advanced robotic brain capable of sensing and responding to the dynamic physical world, interacting safely and intelligently, and learning from experience. He will also delve into the potential of these advancements to drive innovation across industries, including their role in the ultimate quest for Robotic Knowledge Discovery in the Natural Sciences. Join us as we envision a future where robots are not just tools, but true collaborators in shaping tomorrow.
Sami Haddadin is a world-renowned robotics and AI researcher. He served as Director of the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich and is now Vice President for Research at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi. His pioneering work spans robotics, artificial intelligence, and neurotechnology, driving innovations that shape the future of human-centered robotics and embodied AI. From groundbreaking research to globally used commercial robots like Franka and KUKA, Professor Haddadin’s contributions power the current revolution in physical AI. Recognized with prestigious awards, including the Leibniz Prize, he has also shared his vision as a plenary speaker at leading conferences like AAAI and ICRA. Beyond the lab, his work influences global AI strategies and features in science and art museums worldwide.
Introductory remarks will be made by the DAAD Hub’s Director, Professor Chris Young, and the DFG’s Vice President, Professor Johannes Grave. Childhood and Contemporary Catholicism
describes the significance of Catholicism in the lives of children, both Catholic and non-Catholic. By talking to children and young people, as well as educational professionals in many countries Gerard Lemos uncovered the diverse profundities of their spiritual, family and community lives.
He argues that growing up in the challenging modern world is greatly enhanced by encounters with Catholic faith and practice in education, parish life, youth work, pilgrimages, monastic retreats and religious art and music.
This book will help Catholic professionals everywhere to reflect on, and strengthen their work with children, young people and parents.
Biography: Lord Lemos
Lord Lemos is the Chair of the English Heritage Board of Trustees. He is a member of the House of Lords. A social policy expert, Lord Lemos is the author of many books and reports about the role of communities and inclusion of vulnerable people including Childhood and Contemporary Catholicism and The Good Prison: Conscience, crime and punishment. He has also worked in financial services for many years. He is the Chair of the Board of National Savings & Investments and London Institute of Banking and Finance. Lord Lemos previously served as Deputy Chair and Acting Chair of the British Council.
Biography: Chris Beirne

He has worked with young people and with Catholic Education for over forty years. His current research on the future of Catholic Education and the provision of Catholic Schools in fulfilling the mission of the church in education comes at a time of crisis or change for Catholic Education as we embark on the invitation of the Holy Father towards becoming a more synodal church.

Exhibition Opening: Looking at Her | Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge
May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Looking at Her explores portraiture and how artists turn to the figurative and the fictitious in their expansive depictions of women. Portraits of writers, poets and artists sit alongside speculative imaginings of interior worlds to explore women’s lives more universally. How women are seen and how they see themselves runs through several of the works, prompting us to think about the inherent multiplicity of the self and how we are perceived by others. Drawing from the works in The Women’s Art Collection as well as long term loans, this exhibition showcases the work of women artists to comprehend the myriad ways that artists wrestle with the experience of being in the world, both corporally and spiritually. The Cambridge Camerata Academy is absolutely thrilled to present two towering masterpieces of the piano trio repertoire: Schubert's deeply poignant hommage to Beethoven and Tchaikovsky's quintessentially Russian masterpiece that inspired an entire new generation of composers. Barbara Dziewięcka-Data
, cellist

.

Piano Trio in A minor op 50
Barbara Dziewięcka-Data
Barbara Dziewięcka-Data is a violinist who plays with a rare warmth and elegance that always leaves her audience intrinsically satisfied. A truly versatile musician, she is equally at home in a classical concert hall as in a jazz improvisation session, just as long as her personal warmth and graceful spirit are free to shine.
A passionate chamber musician, she takes great pleasure collaborating with fellow musicians, performing regularly in London as well as Cambridge Camerata Academy concerts, but also all around the world including such countries as the United States, Poland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Colombia, Cuba, Azerbaijan among others.
Barbara pursues an active orchestral career, playing regularly with such orchestras as the Oxford Philharmonic - where she is Principal First Violin – as well as with BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Academy of St. Martin’s in the Fields and London Concert Orchestra.
But Barbara is also passionate about other music genres, and has performed with artists such as Quincy Jones, Hugh Jackman, Joss Stone, Pete Tong, Jonas Blue and others. She has enjoyed playing jazz in venues like the Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express in Soho in London, Bestival in the Isle of White and the London O2 Arena. Since 2010, Barbara has performed regularly with Nigel Kennedy as a member and co-leader of his “Orchestra of Life”, including in the Gala Concert at the Royal Albert Hall with Jean-Luc Ponty and the Led Zeppelin’s star Robert Plant.
Another of her great loves is playing Latin music. She regularly plays with various tango ensembles in London and has co-founded her own project,
The Ultimate Tango
. She has also recorded an album with Astor Piazzolla’s Tangos in original new arrangements. More recently, she began performing as solo violinist with the London based tango group
The Viazzani Ensemble
. She is also the violinist of the celebrated Latin ensemble
Classico Latino
which regularly takes her to South America, performing in such venues as Teatro Colon, Teatro Mayor Julio Santo Domingo and Teatro Libre in Bogota, Colombia as well as various Colombian TV and Radio stations.
Barbara is a much sought after teacher, holding posts at Junior Guildhall, Kings College School, North London Conservatoire, Paddington Academy, St. Martin in the Fields School for Girls and the North Bridge House Senior School in Hampstead. She is also a founding member of the Cambridge Chamber Academy where she regularly coaches chamber music, gives masterclasses and participates in its Summer Festival.
Peter Adams
Peter Adams' career can truly be described as meteoric. When most musicians are still at school, the sixteen year old Peter was playing in the orchestra of London Festival Ballet. By the time he was 21 he had become principal cellist of both the London String Orchestra and the London City Ballet. Perhaps even more remarkably he became in the same year Professor of viola da gamba and baroque cello at the Royal Academy of Music - the youngest ever professor in the Academy's history.
Peter began his musical studies whilst at school with Dennis Nesbitt and Maurice Zimbler. At the age of 16 he joined the orchestra of London Festival Ballet and in 1984 was made principal cellist with the London String Orchestra and London City Ballet. In the same year he was appointed professor of viola da gamba and baroque cello at the Royal Academy of Music where, at 21, he was the youngest ever professor at the RAM.
In 1988 Peter left England to study for two years at Indiana University, USA, where he took lessons and masterclasses with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Janos Starker, Paul Tortelier and Rostislav Dubinsky. Upon returning to England He undertook a period of study with William Pleeth. He was a founder member of the Rogeri Trio and is currently a member of the Bochmann String Quartet, both with a large list of recordings and broadcasts. Peter appears as guest principal cellist with a variety of orchestras all over Britain and is the principal cellist of the English String Orchestra, Brighton Philharmonic, Oxford Philomusica and the City of Oxford Orchestra. Peter's interest in the viola continues with solo appearances on viola da gamba and as the director of the Elizabethan Consort of Violas.
He is greatly sought after as a teacher both of the cello and as a chamber music coach giving masterclasses, adjudicating and judging a wide variety of students and young professionals across the country.
He is currently teaching cello for Oxford University and for Oundle School.
