About
Our Dollar, Your Problem
A leading economist explores the global rise of the U.S. dollar and shows why its future stability is far from assured.
Our Dollar, Your Problem
argues that America’s currency might not have reached today’s lofty pinnacle without a certain amount of good luck. Drawing in part on his own experiences, including with policymakers and world leaders, Kenneth Rogoff animates the remarkable postwar run of the dollar—how it beat out the Japanese yen, the Soviet ruble, and the euro—and the challenges it faces today from crypto and the Chinese yuan, the end of reliably low inflation and interest rates, political instability, and the fracturing of the dollar bloc. Americans cannot take for granted that the Pax Dollar era will last indefinitely, not only because many countries are deeply frustrated with the system, but also because overconfidence and arrogance can lead to unforced errors. Rogoff shows how America’s outsized power and exorbitant privilege can spur financial instability—not just abroad but also at home.

Cristóbal de Morales: Missa Ave Maria & Missa Si bona suscepimus | Little Saint Mary's Parish Church, Cambridge
May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)
Cambridge
Online box office closes at 11am on Sat 3rd May. Thereafter tickets are available on the door.
Cristóbal de Morales (c.1500-1553) was the first Spanish composer to enjoy an international reputation. After early choirmaster posts in Spain, he was appointed to the Papal Choir in Rome in 1535 by Pope Paul III. He stayed there for ten years, publishing eight Magnificats and fifteen Masses. On his return to Spain he took up a series of prominent choirmasterships, but poor health and a surly disposition meant he never stayed anywhere long, and he died, possibly from malaria, in 1553.
Morales’ Masses are his greatest achievement. In this concert the men of DE PROFUNDIS perform two outstanding examples - one based on the famous plainchant tune Ave Maria, and the other a sumptous setting for six voices based on Verdelot's heartfelt motet Si bona suscepimus. The programme ends with the Magnificat tertii toni.
This concert is the fourth instalment of an ambitious twelve-year project by De Profundis to perform and record the complete Masses and Magnificats by Morales, conducted by Robert Hollingworth and Eamonn Dougan.
EAMONN DOUGAN is a renowned baritone who sings regularly with the Sixteen, I Fagiolini and Alamire. He is also Associate Conductor of the Sixteen, founding Director of Britten Sinfonia Voices, and a Visiting Professor to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he teaches ensemble singing. Along with Robert Hollingworth and Nicholas Mulroy he hosts Choral Chihuahua, a podcast series about all things choral.

Einstein's Violin | Old Labs, Newnham College, University of Cambridge
May 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
Following on from their hugely successful, sold-out 2024 show, Pride and Prejudice in Words and Music, Leora Cohen and Paul Wingfield, along with distinguished actor Harry Meacher, present Einstein's Violin, a musical drama for narrator, violin and piano. This one-hour costumed show, written by Paul Wingfield, will be performed in the historic setting of Newnham College's Old Labs. Einstein famously remarked that, had he not pursued science, he would have been a musician. Einstein's Violin transports the audience to the parallel universe of the great man’s alternative career as a violinist. On Monday 11 April 1955, Einstein is in his study at his Princeton home writing a radio address for the NBC. His violin, ‘Lina’, is, as always, by his side in her battered old case. Einstein becomes distracted, opens the case and tells his life story as a musician, from his first violin lessons at the age of 5, through his music-making in Zürich, Prague and Berlin, to his involvement in the USA in benefit concerts to raise money for refugees from the War in Europe. Along the way, he recounts his interactions with a panoply of leading cultural figures and performing musicians of the first half of the twentieth century. On a deeper level, he describes his voyage of discovery of his identity as a European Jew, shaped above all by his experiences in pre-War Berlin and the Holocaust, and he grapples with the fundamental questions of the morality of war and the existence of God. The narrative is underscored by music for violin and piano that essentially forms the soundtrack to his life, incorporating, in addition to original music, reimagined versions of works played at his funeral and his memorial service, and of other pieces that profoundly influenced him. The heart of the show is a complete performance of Einstein’s favourite work, Mozart’s Violin Sonata in E minor (1778), which he performed memorably in Princeton in January 1941. A vibrant and innovative fusion of one-person play, melodrama and instrumental recital, Einstein’s Violin presents a unique insight into the inner life of the twentieth-century’s most celebrated scientist.

VENUE HIGHLIGHT
Originally established in 1855 as the Queens Hotel, the establishment plated a vital role in the social and economic life of the community.
Over the years, it hosted distinguished guests, served as a venue for important events, and provided a welcoming retreat for travelers. As Hespeler evolved and the hospitality industry changed, the Queens Hotel underwent renovations and adaptations to meet the needs of a modernizing society. Eventually, in response to shifting consumer preferences and market demands, the decision was made to rebrand the building as Ernie's.
Named in homage to a beloved figure in the community at the time, Ernie's embraced the legacy of the Queens Hotel, while ushering in a new era of dining and entertainment. With its cozy atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and commitment to exceptional service, Ernie's quickly became a beloved institution in Hespeler Village. Throughout its history since then, Ernie's has adapted to culinary trends, while continuing to maintain its welcoming atmosphere and sense of community.
WHAT IS ERNIE'S TODAY?
Today, Ernie's stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Queens Hotel, and the entrepreneurial spirit that has shaped Hespeler's history. It continues to remain a cherished destination for locals and out-of-town visitors alike; offering a taste of the past, blended seemlessly with the comforts of the present.

ABOUT HOTTER IN THE HAMPTONS
As New York City’s fashion it-girl, Lola has been living her dream. But when her career comes to a screeching halt after a very public snafu, everything Lola has worked for – her loyal following, her designer closet, her perfect boyfriend – starts to go up in flames. And when notorious culture critic Aly Ray Carter lights the final match by writing a scathing exposé, it feels as if Lola has lost it all.
When Lola flees to the Hamptons to escape her mistakes, she expects to spend her summer drinking Minuty by the pool while carefully rebuilding both her confidence and her brand. Instead, she looks over the trimmed hedges to see none other than her rival and newest neighbor: Aly Ray Carter.
As summer blazes on, Lola is swept into an intoxicating situation with the woman who ruined her life, marred by chaos and confusion as she tries to pinpoint why Aly has her so captivated. She thought the Hamptons would be the perfect place to outrun her mess, but quickly realizes there’s no place to run.

Exhibition Opening: Looking at Her | Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge
May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
Looking at Her explores portraiture and how artists turn to the figurative and the fictitious in their expansive depictions of women. Portraits of writers, poets and artists sit alongside speculative imaginings of interior worlds to explore women’s lives more universally. How women are seen and how they see themselves runs through several of the works, prompting us to think about the inherent multiplicity of the self and how we are perceived by others. The Archive of Dread Returns | The Leper Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene
May 10, 2025 (UTC+1)
Cambridge
Robert Lloyd Parry returns to the Leper Chpale with more tales of madness, monsters and the living dead
FRESH CONTENT GUARANTEED...
In late 2019 Robert Lloyd Parry inherited the contents of a flat belonging to a dead man that he’d never met. The property was full boxes, which were themselves stuffed with the most chilling documents: letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, notebooks, postcards. Filed in disarray, they all told impossible tales of terror. He’d like to share some of these with you now, in this gripping new storytelling show.
Come, hear what lies within the archive of dread…
Robert Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Theatre is a performance storyteller specializing in supernatural literature and science fiction. He is best known for his shows based on the ghost stories of M R James.
“Wonderful, magical storytelling. A pleasing reminder that the spoken word can be as spine-chilling as anything in the cinema.”
— The Daily Mail
“Lloyd Parry [is] one of the country’s most idisyncratic and underrated performers…”
— Times Literary Supplement
