Einstein's Violin | Old Labs, Newnham College, University of Cambridge

May 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Musical
Arts
Following on from their hugely successful, sold-out 2024 show, Pride and Prejudice in Words and Music, Leora Cohen and Paul Wingfield, along with distinguished actor Harry Meacher, present Einstein's Violin, a musical drama for narrator, violin and piano. This one-hour costumed show, written by Paul Wingfield, will be performed in the historic setting of Newnham College's Old Labs. Einstein famously remarked that, had he not pursued science, he would have been a musician. Einstein's Violin transports the audience to the parallel universe of the great man’s alternative career as a violinist. On Monday 11 April 1955, Einstein is in his study at his Princeton home writing a radio address for the NBC. His violin, ‘Lina’, is, as always, by his side in her battered old case. Einstein becomes distracted, opens the case and tells his life story as a musician, from his first violin lessons at the age of 5, through his music-making in Zürich, Prague and Berlin, to his involvement in the USA in benefit concerts to raise money for refugees from the War in Europe. Along the way, he recounts his interactions with a panoply of leading cultural figures and performing musicians of the first half of the twentieth century. On a deeper level, he describes his voyage of discovery of his identity as a European Jew, shaped above all by his experiences in pre-War Berlin and the Holocaust, and he grapples with the fundamental questions of the morality of war and the existence of God. The narrative is underscored by music for violin and piano that essentially forms the soundtrack to his life, incorporating, in addition to original music, reimagined versions of works played at his funeral and his memorial service, and of other pieces that profoundly influenced him. The heart of the show is a complete performance of Einstein’s favourite work, Mozart’s Violin Sonata in E minor (1778), which he performed memorably in Princeton in January 1941. A vibrant and innovative fusion of one-person play, melodrama and instrumental recital, Einstein’s Violin presents a unique insight into the inner life of the twentieth-century’s most celebrated scientist. Kenneth Rogoff at the Cambridge Public Library | Cambridge Public Library

May 12, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Cambridge
Cultural Experiences
Harvard Book Store and the Cambridge Public Library welcome Kenneth Rogoff —Maurits C. Boas Professor at Harvard University and former chief economist at the IMF, long ranked among the top ten most cited economists—for a discussion of his new book Our Dollar, Your Problem: An Insider's View of Seven Turbulent Decades of Global Finance, and the Road Ahead . He will be joined in conversation by Gish Jen —acclaimed author of Thank You, Mr. Nixon . Ticketing RSVP for free to this event or choose the "Book-Included" ticket to reserve a hardcover copy of Our Dollar, Your Problem and pick it up at the event. Kenneth Rogoff will sign copies of his new book after the presentation. About Our Dollar, Your Problem A leading economist explores the global rise of the U.S. dollar and shows why its future stability is far from assured. Our Dollar, Your Problem argues that America’s currency might not have reached today’s lofty pinnacle without a certain amount of good luck. Drawing in part on his own experiences, including with policymakers and world leaders, Kenneth Rogoff animates the remarkable postwar run of the dollar—how it beat out the Japanese yen, the Soviet ruble, and the euro—and the challenges it faces today from crypto and the Chinese yuan, the end of reliably low inflation and interest rates, political instability, and the fracturing of the dollar bloc. Americans cannot take for granted that the Pax Dollar era will last indefinitely, not only because many countries are deeply frustrated with the system, but also because overconfidence and arrogance can lead to unforced errors. Rogoff shows how America’s outsized power and exorbitant privilege can spur financial instability—not just abroad but also at home. Bios Kenneth Rogoff is Maurits C. Boas Professor at Harvard University, and former chief economist at the IMF. His influential 2009 book with Carmen Reinhart, This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly , shows the remarkable quantitative similarities across time and countries in the roots and aftermath of debt and financial crises. Rogoff is also known for his pioneering work on central bank independence, and on exchange rates. His monthly syndicated column on global economic issues is published in over 50 countries. Rogoff is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has long ranked among the top ten most cited economists, and is an international grandmaster of chess. Gish Jen 's short stories have been included in The Best American Short Stories five times, including i n The Best American Short Stories of the Century , edited by John Updike. A fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has been the recipient of a Lannan Literary Award as well as a five-year Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times , and many anthologies and textbooks. The Black Sea is being recreated by war and oil. The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam caught the world’s attention, but a continual barrage of attacks on industrial sites has wreaked havoc on stretches of coastline. Militarization has destroyed marshlands and seaweed forests. Naval mines threaten improvised shipping corridors. Oil spills and toxic runoff endanger marine ecosystems from the Danube to the Don. War has displaced over ten million people, with unfathomable consequences on the local economies, infrastructure, and social fabric. What does it take to understand a region in which the relentless upheaval is both terrestrial and maritime? Which strategies promise insight in these conditions? Do our perspectives and analyses shift when we anchor our understanding of the region in the sea itself? Join us for an afternoon of conversations hosted by the Black Sea Lab. Dwell - Simon Armitage, at the Palmerston Room | Palmerston Room

May 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Arts
Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Simon Armitage on the 13th of May at the Palmerston Room, St John's College to discuss his new collection, 'Dwell'. Poet Laureate Simon Armitage was inspired to write these poems by the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, an ambitious restoration project where history and mystery combine. He uses elements of riddle and folklore to animate a series of dwellings: the ‘twig-and-leaf crow’s-nest squat’ of a squirrel’s drey, a beaver lodge’s ‘spillikin stave church’ and a hive’s ‘reactor core’. Distinctions between human and animal, natural and cultivated, are blurred, emphasising commonality and creating a vibrant account of ‘non-stop stop-motion life’. Dwell warns of the fragility of these spaces and their dwellers, exposed to relentless and sadly familiar environmental threats. Just as a garden provides refuge for wildlife, so do these intricate poems offer lasting homes to those who dwell within their lines. Information Source: Heffers Bookshop | eventbrite

John Cassidy at the Cambridge Public Library | Cambridge Public Library

Cultural Experiences
Harvard Book Store and the Cambridge Public Library welcome John Cassidy —staff writer at The New Yorker and author of the books Dot.con: The Greatest Story Ever Sold and How Markets Fail , which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction—for a discussion of his new book Capitalism and Its Critics: A History: From the Industrial Revolution to AI . He will be joined in conversation by Simon Johnson —Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he is head of the Global Economics and Management group. Ticketing RSVP for free to this event or choose the "Book-Included" ticket to reserve a hardcover copy of Capitalism and Its Critics and pick it up at the event. John Cassidy will sign copies of his new book after the presentation. About Capitalism and Its Critics A sweeping, dramatic history of capitalism as seen through the eyes of its fiercest critics. At a time when artificial intelligence, climate change, and inequality are raising fundamental questions about the economic system, Capitalism and Its Critics provides a kaleidoscopic history of global capitalism, from the East India Company and Industrial Revolution to the digital revolution. But here John Cassidy, a staff writer at The New Yorker and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, adopts a bold new approach: he tells the story through the eyes of the system’s critics. From the English Luddites who rebelled against early factory automation to communists in Germany and Russia in the early twentieth century, to the Latin American dependistas , the international Wages for Housework campaign of the 1970s, and the modern degrowth movement, the absorbing narrative traverses the globe. It visits with familiar names―Smith, Marx, Luxemburg, Keynes, Polanyi―but also focuses on many less familiar figures, including William Thompson, the Irish proto-socialist whose work influenced Marx; Flora Tristan, the French proponent of a universal labor union; John Hobson, the original theorist of imperialism; J. C. Kumarappa, the Indian exponent of Ghandian economics; Eric Williams, the Trinidadian author of a famous thesis on slavery and capitalism; Joan Robinson, the Cambridge economist and critic of the Cold War; and Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen, the founding father of degrowth. Blending rich biography, panoramic history, and lively exploration of economic theories, Capitalism and Its Critics is true big history that illuminates the deep roots of many of the most urgent issues of our time. Bios John Cassidy is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of Dot.con: The Greatest Story Ever Sold and How Markets Fail , which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction. He lives in New York City. Simon Johnson is the Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he is head of the Global Economics and Management group. At MIT, he is also co-director of the Shaping the Future of Work Initiative and a Research Affiliate at Blueprint Labs. In 2024, Johnson received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Johnson’s most recent book Power and Progress: Our 1000-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity , co-written with Daron Acemoğlu, was published in 2023. Sandra Moussempès will give a short talk about her work and background before performing some of her poetry in French and English. About Sandra Moussempès: Sandra Moussempès is a French poet whose work draws upon upon ancient figures, like Lilith and Cassandra, and contemporary film and art, like the works of Cindy Sherman and David Lynch, in order to conjure spectral voices and feminine doubles. Through these ancient and contemporary resonances and echoes, her work plays with memory, voices, and telepathic atmospheres in a highly original poetic voice. She has published thirteen books, including Sauvons l’ennemie (Poésie/Flammarion, 2025), Fréquence Mulholland (Éditions MF, 2023), Cassandre à bout portant (Poésie/Flammarion, 2021), Cinéma de l’affect, Boucles de voix off pour film fantôme (Éditions de l’Attente, 2020), and Sunny Girls (Poésie/Flammarion, 2015). In addition to her writing, she is also a singer and performer. She has composed several albums of sound creations that integrate her singing voice with her poetry. Spaces are limited - if you cannot attend please let us know/cancel via eventbrite so that we can reallocate your ticket. Please email Dr Andrew Sackin-Poll: ajs314@cam.ac.uk with any queries. Burning Down the House | Department of Politics and International Studies

The speaker: Mark Blyth is a Scottish-American political economist. He is currently the William R. Rhodes Professor of International Ecnomics and Professor of International and Public Affairs at Brown University. At Brown, Blyth additionally directs the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs . He will be speaking on the topic of " Burning Down the House: Carbon Politics, American Power, and the Almighty Dollar ". More on this lecture: The US has 330 million citizens, which is less than 5% of the world’s population. Yet its GDP footprint is around 25% of global GDP. How is that possible? While leading-edge technological innovation and a giant military undoubtedly help, what’s really been the secret sauce for the past 30 plus years is the global role of the dollar. The rest of the world needs a savings asset and the US provides it through massive debt issuance and the global role of the dollar in international trade. This has enabled the US to import vast quantities of TVs, Cars, Computers, and everything else you can think of, while paying for it all with digital IOU'S that bear 2% called Treasury bills. The problem with this model is that if you import everything you stop making your own things and you hollow out your industrial base. Both Biden and Trump saw this. Biden sought green re-industrialization through the IRA. Trump seeks re-industrialization through doubling down on the carbon-economy behind massive protective tariffs, which constitutes the growth model of GOP states in the US. If a Trump administration doubles down on carbon, the short term boost to growth through lower input prices plus deregulation will be huge. Possibly enough to propel a two-term administration. Climate denial can be profitable. But the rest of the world, China, Europe and East and South Asia, will continue to develop the green technologies needed to survive in the 21st century. The US will fall behind in this critical area as the countries involved in the green transition trade more intensely with each other. The lock on effect is that the global role of the dollar shrinks. First, because the issuer doesn’t like the side effects. Second, because in a post carbon world, who needs a currency that denominates and is back by carbon assets that no one else uses any more? In short, our addiction to carbon and the politics that it produces risks burning down the house.
