Woodbox Gang releases new album; concert June 13 | The Varsity Center
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Carbondale
Inspired by annual shows at Little Grassy Getdown, an eclipse show at the Varsity in 2024, as well as current events, The Woodbox Gang committed to recording their first album in 12 years. On June 13, 2025, they will perform songs from the new album, “Brown Cane Toad,” and beloved favorites at the Varsity in Carbondale, Illinois.
Band members are Hugh DeNeal, Alex Kirt, Dan Goett, Nate Graham and Max Senteney.
The Woodbox Gang have spent a quarter of a century creating vibrant and timeless music, combining the traditional sounds of American roots music with a raw and ragged sensibility. From the rickety stage floors of a church in downtown Makanda to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., The Woodbox Gang has excited audiences of all kinds over the years. Recently, the band played only a handful of shows, often digging into the vault for tunes written more than 20 years earlier.
Chicago Farmer will open the show with his sharp wit and amazing storytelling in his music. Chicago Farmer has dazzled audiences back and forth across the lands, leaving tears of laughter and catharsis.
This incredible concert will take place Friday, June 13, in the Big Room at the Varsity, which now has new state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and a new cutting-edge heating and cooling system.
Tickets are $20 in advance at Eventbrite (see link) and $25 at the venue on the night of the show when the Varsity Bar and doors open at 6.
The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Be sure to follow at www.facebook.com/varsitycenter for events and other news.

Glenn Poshard poetry, music tour to support local food pantries | The Varsity Center
Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Carbondale
In a one-hour reading of his own poetry, as well as that of his favorite poets, Glenn Poshard explores life’s “Beginnings and Endings” in word and song. The Poshard Poetry Tour begins Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at the Varsity. Doors open at 1 p.m. Poshard, a son of Southern Illinois, was an educator and former politician who served as an Illinois State Senator and U.S. Congressman, serving five terms in Congress from 1989 to 1999. He was also an Illinois gubernatorial candidate and president of the Southern Illinois University system. Poshard will be touring southern and central Illinois in support of local food pantries. Admission to the presentation of powerful poetry readings and music is free, but he hopes patrons will donate to a local food pantry to support hungry children. A local food pantry volunteer will be on hand to receive all donations. The donations are tax deductible. Poshard has been working his entire life to support the needs of poor and hungry children, starting with his work in a Korean orphanage when he was only 18-years-old. He has a goal of raising $500,000 for local food pantries by Christmas. The money will be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for hungry children. All the poems Poshard shares evoke in us the most powerful human emotions and challenge us to grapple with life’s deepest questions about love, courage, faith, passion, joy and, finally, death itself. The music he sings gives greater depth to the poetry he so powerfully shares. You cannot go away from this reading without feeling the spiritual ebb and flow of life’s embrace. You will be moved. It is a cultural event that you will never forget.
