HKPAX: The Three Bowls Co Op's A Flexitarian | Hong Kong
Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
"Omnivore" is a new work launched by Jiang Fan and Zhuang Jiaoyun (Three Kinds of Bowls Cooperative) in 2022. It premiered at the GOAT Special Youth Theater Exhibition at Shanghai YOUNG Theater in December of that year. The work is presented in a semi-autobiographical form, integrating body and language, performance and documentation, forming a unique monologue theater style. In 2023, the work will be further developed on the original basis. On the one hand, it will explore female topics more deeply, and on the other hand, it will more organically integrate physical expression and verbal expression. That year, the work was performed at the Shanghai International Dance Center Experimental Theater (Boundless Contemporary Youth Frontier Dance Exhibition) and the Black Box Theater of Nanjing University, and received favorable reviews.
"Omnivore" tells the story of Hu Douzi, a lonely soul living in Shanghai, trying to find fresh and diverse spiritual independence that he has not yet had at a special time of material independence and emotional blankness brought about by divorce. In the play, she is both the subject and the narrator, traveling in different media and time and space. Among the female beings evoked by her thoughts and memories, there are those who must face and even internalize the exchange of interests in various fields; there are those who, as "middle women", need to constantly overcome social prejudice and self-anxiety; there are also those who repeatedly They are entangled in freedom, responsibility, family love and friendship. Truth and humor are the keynotes of "Omnivore", and the bones of the work are a low roar about banality, growth and aging, emotional PTSD, or the miscellaneous plight of women.

HKPAX: L'Arriere Scene's Caution: Fragile | Hong Kong
Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Two bubble-wrapped beings are delivered on stage, their boxes are labeled ‘Fragile’ and ‘Caution’, those simple words becoming their names. Fragile and Caution are akin to the First Man and Woman of this office towers and online shopping era, receiving the basic kit to create an office space where everything is possible. As they familiarise themselves with their environment and try to understand the reasons for existence, a catalogue falls into their lap. A plethora of objects are suddenly available to them. Sale! Clearance! They become hungry to buy, buy, buy! And they grow thirsty for coffee! As deliveries accumulate, their universe rapidly becomes chaotic and impractical, leaving them almost buried alive. How could Fragile and Caution have acted differently?
Programme Remarks
Approximately 55 minutes in duration.Free seating. You are recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the event starts. No admission for latecomers.Programmes are subject to change without prior notice. HKPAX reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the arrangements.

HKPAX: Seo Jungmin's ONE, My Utopia! | Hong Kong
Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Liminality: The holy and religious moment experienced by humans in the space and behavior normally considered to be taboos.
Seo Jungmin creates her subconscious utopia through Jeollado gut, a traditional ritual performed by shamans in the southwestern region of South Korea. In ONE, My Utopia!, Seo Jungmin confidently interprets her findings from her extensive local research into the ritual.
Her unique perspective takes us to a new level, away from everyday life, finding two fundamental principles: “improvisation” and “repetition”. The improvisational melodies are so sensitive to spatial energy that even the air becomes a musical element, and the process of constantly building structure based on variations resembles the sound world of the traditional ritual, becoming a showcase for Jungmin’s overwhelming artistry. The 25-string gayageum, shaman song, and percussion create a truly unique and immersive experience seamlessly blending traditional Korean music with contemporary improvisation. Seo Jungmin performs with her longtime collaborators—traditional vocalist Kim Yulhee and multi-percussionist You Byoungwook—for the best possible performance.

HKPAX: Burkicom's The Island! | Hong Kong
Oct 17–Oct 18, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
An existential dance expedition into the unspoiled nature. Uncertainty, mistakes, cracks, scratches. Situations cropped to the bone. Emotions.
Scenic multimedia modulation of the habitat of a nameless island in the Czech Republic. The production of The Island! was one of the top five productions of the year at the 2021 Theatre Critics Awards and the highest-rated dance production in the Czech Republic.
“Environmental topics are permeating the news, political actions and our everyday life with ever-increasing frequency—but what are we actually talking about? Which nature? The forest where we go to gather mushrooms, and which captivates us with its calmness? What is the wilderness when only 4% out of the total weight of mammals in the world live in true freedom, 36% are humans, and 60% are reared in captivity for our entertainment or as food? And what is our relationship to the wilderness when we are part of it? We tried to create a model situation, a kind of laboratory, into which you put individual elements, set conditions and let the story unfold. Associations, links, and real-life situations were freely added, generating further development. We broke through the barriers and started to perceive who was a human and who an animal. The outlines of the future became clearer.”—Jana Burkiewiczová

HKPAX: Sichuan Opera Theatre of Chengdu's Zhuo Wenjun | Hong Kong
Oct 17–Oct 18, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
For more than two millennia, the romance of Zhou Wenjun and Sima Xiangru have inspired numerous literary and artistic interpretations. Playwright Xu Fen recasts this story featuring only Zhuo as the principal character. Through the depiction of Zhuo’s feelings about life and love, this production arrives at quite an unconventional conclusion. The emphasis on emotions, however, connects both past and present by sentiments that are universal.
Zhuo Wenjun has no set, nor does it use the standard props of one-table-two-chairs, yet the scenery is beautiful because the abstract stage of traditional xiqu opens to even freer imagination. The aesthetic experience is further enhanced by a supporting cast of beautiful women. Musically, Xu employs a new approach to vocal delivery, quoting traditional tune-types (Man Ting Fang, Jiang Tou Gui, Ren Huang Long, Yi Zhi Hua, Shua Hai Er, Qing Nao Ao and Deng Diao) enriched by modern compositional techniques, sometimes even referencing the Sichuan narrative “Yangqin” style.
Since Zhuo and Sima were members of the intellectual class, this production is filled with beauty, elegance and literary flair. However, the genre of Sichuan opera is in no way diluted, retaining its “stunning, spicy and hot” nature.
All in all, although this new work never veers away from its nature as Sichuan opera, it fuses legacy and progress, classic and new trends, literature and drama, elegancy and popularism, beauty and discernment, song and dance perfectly.

The exciting activities of various festivals will be staged in the "9+2" cities of the Greater Bay Area, showing the new vitality of the humanistic Bay Area. This is the first time that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has hosted the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Arts and Culture Festival. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will be responsible for planning the entire Festival, aiming to coordinate the high-quality cultural and artistic resources of the three places of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in an innovative and multi-faceted collaborative manner. Not only will it present a series of wonderful performances from top artists and art groups from the Greater Bay Area and overseas to the audience, it also plans to invite Bay Area art groups to co-produce performance projects with local artists to promote creativity and talent exchange, so as to showcase the modernity and diversity of Bay Area culture and actively play the role of Hong Kong as a "center for cultural and artistic exchanges between China and foreign countries."
The theme of the festival is "Diversity and Fusion - Creating Unlimited Opportunities". More than 100 exciting events will be held simultaneously in cities in the Greater Bay Area, including performing arts performances, museum exhibitions, library activities and film screenings. Artists from Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area are invited to collaborate to create exciting stage performances, promote creative and talent exchanges, and showcase the new vitality of the humanistic Bay Area in many ways.
Opening Program "Sound River"
Tan Dun, a famous contemporary Chinese composer and conductor, spent 12 years starting from Europe, passing through Arabia and Central Asia, and then arriving in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Following the footprints of human civilization, he used the creative method of interweaving film and music to record the disappearing sounds, instruments and cultures in different ancient cities along the Silk Road through 16 short films. Tan Dun wove the images and sounds he recorded into a symphonic poem and named this work that carries the history of human civilization "Sound River".
The concert was conducted by Tan Dun, and the new Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cultural and Art Festival Orchestra composed of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and Macao Orchestra made its world premiere. 16 specially produced short films were played simultaneously during the performance, in dialogue with the symphony orchestra, leading the audience on a "Silk Road of Sound" that travels through the past and the future.
Vivian Lai 2024 "V Union" Concert | West Kowloon Cultural District
Oct 19–Oct 20, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Lei Ruien's "V Union Grace Concert 2024"
After five years of waiting, the concert can finally be restarted
Bringing everyone an unparalleled new music experience
On the "Sunny Road", we hope that "the rainy season will never come again" and realize "one person has a dream"...
A familiar and gentle voice has accompanied everyone for more than 30 years and is still lingering in the minds of the public. After five years, Lai Ruien once again stepped onto the personal stage belonging to Xiao Enzi. The two consecutive performances of Lai Ruien's "V Union Grace Concert 2024" will be held at the Grand Theater of the Xiqu Center in the West Kowloon Cultural District from October 19 to 20, realizing one person has a dream!
As long as there is a dream, there is always a chance to realize it at the right time. Even if this concert has been prepared from 2019 to now, it was originally thought that the endless wait actually has its own arrangements. In 2019, Lai Ruien was preparing for the concert in full swing, starting to design posters, plan concert playlists, etc., but the pandemic hit and put the concert plan on hold. Lai Ruien, like her fans, has waited for five years, and this time she must seize the opportunity to reunite with everyone at V Union (=Re Union), and fans can enjoy her music to their heart's content. The concert poster shoot was specially taken at the concert venue, the Xiqu Center, which is very meaningful and precious to Lai Ruien.
"The preparations for this concert were full of challenges and excitement! We only had three months from the time we learned about the concert to the day of the performance, but I hoped to realize unlimited possibilities within the limited time and achieve the best pairing to bring everyone an unparalleled musical experience. Every member of the entire production team was specially selected by me in the hope of inspiring some new sparks and making the performance full of vitality and creativity. It is particularly worth mentioning that I invited the famous designer Mr. Chen Huaguo to design a series of stage costumes for me to make the performance more visually impactful and add infinite colors! In terms of music, I also specially invited music master Mr. Du Zichi to serve as the music director to ensure that the performance can present the best musical effect. Every rehearsal is full of energy, happiness and anticipation, which makes me full of confidence and excitement for this performance! I hope everyone can look forward to this wonderful performance together, and let us enjoy the joy of music together!"
Talking about the concert songs Shan, "In this concert, I hope to say hello to my friends of many years, and I have chosen some familiar classic songs. I carefully selected some songs, some of which can remind me of the feeling of Girls' Generation, and some are songs with fun and life philosophy. The theme of this concert is all derived from two words - "gratitude". I feel extremely warm and supported by everyone who has been with me on this journey. I spent a lot of time and effort writing this rundown with the producer, including gratitude for appreciation, gratitude for inheritance, and gratitude for the company along the way, and for enjoying every moment of life together. This emotion is the deepest motivation behind my performance. In addition, I hope to bring some special gifts to my fans, choosing some songs they really like, even those melodies that they will recognize immediately when they hear them. This concert is not only about sharing music, but also about the exchange of emotions between us, so that every friend can feel the familiar joy and touch!"

CHILDREN OF THE DUST | Hong Kong
Oct 25, 2024–Feb 8, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
This exhibition aims to create a quiet refuge where art is a temporary escape from the collective depression of the audience. Each work in the exhibition is made of natural materials, from minerals, dust, soil, to ice and fossils. In the exhibition, geological changes across a wide time dimension are juxtaposed with rapid and drastic social changes. Echoes from "deep time" soothe our fatigue in the daily hustle and bustle. The word "dust" in the title of the exhibition refers to the basic components of matter, and "sons of dust" comes from a well-known theory: the elements that make up the human body and matter come from supernova explosions. In other words, we, like the dust, ice and metal used in the works, are fragments of the vast history of the universe. We are all children of dust.

Henry Steiner: The Art of Graphic Communication | M+
Jun 15–Nov 10, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Part of M+’s new Pao Pao and Watari exhibition series, “Henri Stein: Images into Words” celebrates Stein’s influential approach to imagery by showcasing his most iconic projects, tracing the city’s development since the 1960s.
Henri Stein was born in Austria in 1934 and moved to the United States. He studied under the famous American graphic designer Paul Rand at Yale University and was well versed in telling stories through images. After moving to Hong Kong in 1961, he found that this multicultural city was full of vitality and was transforming into an international hub in manufacturing, trade, finance, leisure and tourism. Using concepts and contrasts, he juxtaposed elements of multiple cultures and created a new and infectious way of image communication. This playful, unexpected and intriguing language has made his designs resonate with a wide and diverse audience.
The exhibition is divided into two parts, first tracing Henry Stein’s early experiences and influences, and then taking viewers through Henry Stein’s unique designs, from large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects that reflect Hong Kong’s development to plans that reflect the city’s ambitions to become a tourist resort. Showcasing Henry Stein’s work during Hong Kong’s most prosperous decades, the exhibition illustrates the important role of graphic design in Hong Kong’s unique visual culture.

SANTIAGO EVANS CANALES | PRECIOUSLY PROFANE POSSESSIONS | Double Q Gallery
Aug 31–Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
In a liminal space amid “primitive” experiences and erudite allegories, in which a childlike spirit and the memories therein clash with the adiaphoric character of metropolitan solipsism and the tangential contradictions of contemporary subsistence, innocent and wild scenery thrives affably in the open countryside or along the banks of waterways. Formally composed of a multitude of simple forms and large patches of earthy colours, they generate an authentic, open, and uninhibited fresco.
After the gust of a warm summer evening breeze and generous caresses, libidinous bodies and sweet memories embrace each other. Pleasantly protected by a white sheet, they celebrate the immense pleasure of the present moment, symptomatic of an ideal world that pushes the limits of conventional representations.
Thus arises “Preciously Profane Possessions,” a new exhibition chapter by the young Santiago Evans Canales. At its center is a search for and celebration of the primal colours typical of the bold and magnificent virgin nature. Here, generous and meandering brushstrokes slowly trace the indefinite images of reclining bodies, enlarged through vivid swathes of colour that slowly manifest in the auroral layers of paint.
Through the use of a luxuriant colour palette that generates a golden light, at once warm and vibrant, and endowed with action and movement, all areas of shadow gain a sort of brightness. Sometimes this is a whisper, other times it surges with intensity.
