Join the esteemed poets Gabriel Dozal and José Olivarez for the captivating event, "Authors on Tap: Gabriel Dozal and José Olivarez." During the event, Gabriel will engage in a thought-provoking conversation with José Olivarez, adding an extra layer of depth to the evening.
In "The Border Simulator: Poems," Gabriel Dozal transports readers to a world where the U.S.-Mexico border takes on a new meaning, becoming a realm of invention and simulation. The collection follows Primitivo as he embarks on the arduous journey of crossing the border, where the imaginary boundary grows increasingly tangible and demanding. Meanwhile, Primitiva, his sister, leads a static life as an exploited migrant worker in la fabrica. These vivid poems shed light on the collision of technology, bureaucracy, and humanity, revealing the struggle Primitiva endures in the factory.
With a bilingual format catering to both English and Spanish readers, "The Border Simulator" delves into physical and metaphysical borders while exploring the digital divide of our modern era. Through inventive imagery, playful wordplay, and exhilarating movement, these energetic poems challenge and redefine binaries and divisions.
Gabriel Dozal, a talented poet from El Paso, Texas, is the mastermind behind "The Border Simulator/El Simulador de Fronteras." His work has been featured in esteemed publications such as Poetry magazine, Guernica, and The Iowa Review. José Olivarez, the son of Mexican immigrants, has also made a significant impact in the literary world. He is the author of two poetry collections, including "Promises of Gold," which has been longlisted for the 2023 National Book Awards for poetry. Olivarez's debut book of poems, "Citizen Illegal," was a finalist for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and received accolades from NPR, The Adroit Journal, and the New York Public Library.

His installations and robotic sculptures combine his background as a mechanical engineer and artist, using custom software to create complex, narrative choreographies. These works address important issues faced by indigenous communities in Mexico, including human and land rights, violence, and urgent environmental crises.
Accompanied by Esteban King, the visiting curator and Lit & Luz Visual Arts Director from Mexico City, Huehuecoyotl will discuss the themes and concerns behind his artistic practice. Huehuecoyotl, who resides in Milpa Alta, outside of Mexico City, also runs Calpulli Tecalco, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Nahua language and culture. An essential aspect of Huehuecoyotl's practice is his emphasis on indigenous ancestral knowledge and its integral role in contemporary life and shaping the future.
The event is presented by the Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts, in collaboration with the Media Arts and Design Program at the University of Chicago. It is part of the Lit & Luz Festival, which runs from October 13th to 21st, featuring a variety of bilingual events in Chicago and online. The festival's theme for this year is "TEN," commemorating its tenth anniversary and exploring the concept of having and not having. The full event schedule can be found on the festival's website.
