The Legacy Project | Green Line Performing Arts Center
Jun 27, 2025 (UTC-5)
Chicago
At its core,
Dandelions: Gods Don’t Cry
is about resilience, transformation, and self-acceptance. The dandelion, often dismissed as a weed, symbolizes Blackness, queerness, and survival—thriving in places where it wasn’t meant to, adapting, and still standing tall.
Through the 13-track journey, the album explores:
Personal and collective Black histories, linking past and present struggles to the beauty of endurance.
Queer identity and self-reclamation, navigating the world as both marginalized and divinely powerful.
Family, grief, and healing, with storytelling that honors legacy while challenging systemic erasure.
Musically, the album is immersive and cinematic, weaving together hip-hop, soul, and spoken word. It is meant to be experienced as a living, breathing piece of literature, aligned with Roy's mission to elevate rap as a literary art form.

Conflict As a Force for Growth
Right now, conflict is shaping headlines, policies and communities in ways that can either divide or strengthen us. When this occurs, news media have a unique opportunity to reframe the stories we report and the engagements we support, shifting from high conflict to good conflict.
Led by Hub Director
Deborah Douglas;
Chris Green,
executive editor of The Journal at Kansas Leadership Center for the Common Good; and
Andrea Hart
, a media organizer and chaplain, this 90-minute interactive workshop explores what conflict is really about and provide examples of high and good conflict in news stories. Participants will learn looping, a deep listening technique, and investigate the “understory” during a breakout exploring how to report with nuance, depth and clarity.
10:30-11:15am
Real Impact: Journalism That Dismantles Systemic Injustice
Join us for a compelling dialogue with Chicagoan
Robert Johnson,
a recent exonree, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist
Alison Flowers
, whose groundbreaking reporting was instrumental in securing Johnson's release from prison. Moderated by
Amber Payne
, publisher of The Emancipator, this session explores the powerful intersection of solutions journalism and justice reform, offering valuable insights for journalists and storytellers seeking to create meaningful impact by excavating systems that reveal responses that lead to real impact.

Lunch
11:30am-12:15pm
Investigative Impact: Finding the Right Solutions Story
Join Pulitzer Prize-winner
Tina Rosenberg
, co-founder of the Solutions Journalism Network, for a session on integrating rigorous solutions-focused approaches into investigative reporting. Drawing from her extensive experience, Rosenberg will guide participants through:
Identifying solutions angles that naturally extend from investigative findings
Evaluating the credibility and effectiveness of potential solutions
Maintaining critical perspective while reporting on responses to problems
This session is ideal for investigative journalists seeking to expand their reporting toolkit and increase the constructive impact of their work.
2-4:30pm
Future Spin: How We Can Fix the News Together
One of the most significant challenges to the survival of a free press has been the failure to invent a more resilient business model. This 2.5-hour firestarter session and interactive workshop challenges journalists to reimagine their role in society — not just as documenters of change, but as catalysts and partners in addressing the systemic challenges to a credible news and information ecosystem. This isn't just a conversation—it's an activation. Facilitated by Flip Labs Founder
Cheryl Dahle
, a former journalist who works at the intersection of design and social change, participants will step into the role of creative agitator. she will be joined by
Candice Fortman
, JSK Fellow and Outlier Media board member and
Ashir Badami
, senior lecturer, leader of Media Management and Leadership at Medill.
Guided by design thinking principles, summit attendees will actively co-create solutions that support a viable news and information ecosystem. The workshop portion engages hands-on prototyping to empower participants to seize ownership of journalism's evolution to drive transformation with a refreshed sense of agency about shaping the media's future.

Trip Description
All aboard the Out Our Front Door Express as we trace the historic route of the grand old Roarin’ Elgin - the once-mighty interurban railway that soared along the banks of the Fox River. Setting out from Chicago, we first roll onto the Illinois Prairie Path. The very first Rails to Trails path, this route connects many scenic suburban towns and villages through its over 61 miles of pavement and gravel.
Riding west with the early summer sun, we’ll stop for breakfast at the vibrant Wheaton French Market to grab fresh-baked pastries, local small batch cold brew, and other delights. Energized and fortified, we turn west up the Fox River trail and sail along the riverside through historic towns whose fortunes waxed and waned with the rails. We’ll see the Fox River Railway Museum in South Elgin, ride by windmills in Geneva, a restored train depot in Batavia, and maybe stop for BBQ in a converted caboose in Dundee!
In between towns, we’ll take a break from the sun as the trail curls through deeply shaded oak forests, broad freshwater fens, and stunning stretches of oak savannah. As the summer sun starts to dip low, we’ll leave the Fox River valley behind and travel through the final miles of rolling farmland to arrive at Chain O’Lakes state park. Dinner awaits you on arrival, along with s’more and story telling around the campfire.
This multi-modal adventure will cover approximately 100 miles on the first day. The following morning we ride a few short miles into Fox Lake to load up a Metra bike car and ride the rails back into Chicago to rest and recover.

About the Guides
Our guides are part of a community of volunteers that believe in adventure and helping others find adventure right out our front door. They exude a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive spirit which are foundational values at OOFD. They have love and appreciation for their home and like sharing knowledge about that home with others, thus helping the riders to develop a stronger sense of gratitude for our local history and nature.
The guides will be set with the route and an extensive script about the area you’ll be riding through with intentionally chosen breakpoints along the way.
They are more than someone to follow on the ride. They are trained and will be there to encourage and support you as well as support with mechanicals that may arise.
