Rucksack Readers
is the specialist publisher for long-distance trails celebrates 25 years of award-winning guidebooks for adventurous walkers and cyclists.
This year marks 25 years since Jacquetta Megarry founded the only guidebook publisher dedicated to long-distance trails for walkers and cyclists in the UK, probably in the world: the award-winning Rucksack Readers®.
Megarry founded Rucksack Readers® in 2000 to create guidebooks in a rucksack-friendly format. On her first long-distance walk, the West Highland Way, she had found the traditional design of the official guidebook impractical. Megarry thought she could do better and began to devise a waterproof, lightweight format with built-in mapping, optimised for the route. Rucksack Readers® are the result. They have become one of the UK’s bestselling guides to long distance walking in the UK and Ireland with more than 40 guidebooks in print.
Uniquely, Megarry tests the directions by walking the trails personally, and often works closely with the trail manager to improve the route itself. She devised the Rob Roy Way in 2001 and has remained deeply involved with its management and waymarking ever since.
Rucksack Readers® are printed on specially treated paper that resists rain and snow. They focus on the things which matter – rigorously field-tested route descriptions, built-in maps optimised for the route and 100 gorgeous photographs – all in the lightest and most weatherproof package on the market.
To commemorate this milestone, on 1 May Rucksack Readers®is launching a new Scottish title,
River Tay Way
, and revised editions of popular English routes (
Cumbria Way
and
Heart of the Cotswolds
) together with the
Wicklow Way
which starts in Dublin.
"I had the most wonderful time walking the Nidderdale Way and would recommend it as an ideal long-distance path."

about his life-spanning epic novel about death and new beginnings,
The River
.
There’s a saying, beloved of Scottish grannies: “Whit’s fur ye will no’ go by ye.” Seemingly embracing this maxim, Lachlan McCormack lives his life as aimless as a piece of driftwood, but somehow gets to where he always wanted to be – where the river meets the sea. The novel is a love story, both to his childhood sweetheart, and to Scotland, and follows Lachlan’s journey through seven decades of the nation’s political, sporting and cultural history (and disappointments). Along the way, it appears that only death has the power to propel him onward, and the novel revisits the seven significant deaths that have shaped him and mapped his journey. It explores the cyclical nature of life, love, happiness, and Scotland’s ongoing struggle with its place in the world.

Edinburgh
Join Craig A Smith on Friday 2nd May at 7pm, as he chats to Doug Johnstone about his life-spanning epic novel about death and new beginnings,The River. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of The River. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please do get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Refunds are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, we are unable to offer a refund after the event. Sacred Ciorcals: Igniting the Creative Flame Within | The Salisbury Centre
May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Overview
This workshop provides a space to reflect on the personal significance of seasonal change and to use mandala-style artwork to portray this journey. It will be structured into four parts, beginning with a meditation and concluding with a connection circle. Below is an outline of the morning’s structure.
Workshop Structure
The workshop will begin with a welcoming circle. Participants will receive information about the facilities and an overview of the morning’s activities. There will also be an opportunity to check in and connect with the group.
While we start together, this space is an invitation for personal reflection. The hope is for this space to allow the opportunity for individual self-expression through a creative medium. The workshop will flow through four main stages:
Meditation:
You will be guided through a meditation to inspire the creative process and begin visualizing your ‘sacred ciorcal’.
Orchestrating your idea:
After the meditation, you will be invited to select the medium that best suits your vision. A variety of materials, including paints, black ink pens, pencils, and natural elements (such as leaves and rocks), will be available. If you regularly work with a particular medium, you are welcome to bring your own materials. Card will be provided as a canvas.
Creative Expression:
The core of the workshop will focus on bringing your vision to life. You will fill your ‘sacred ciorcal’ with images, words, or symbols that hold personal meaning. Intentional music will be played to support the creative flow.
Closing connection circle:
Finally, we will reconnect in a closing circle. There will be an invitation for people to share their creative process and their ‘sacred ciorcals’ if they feel comfortable.
