An evening with John D O Fulton: Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment | Advocates Library
May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment
by John D O Fulton
The new ideas and values that emerged from Scotland between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth century were shaped by the moral dilemmas of the day. As such, the story of the Scottish Enlightenment is intertwined with that of slavery and the slave trade.
In his book,
"Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment"
, John D O Fulton WS explores this nuanced and conflicting relationship via the compelling life stories of an extraordinary cast of characters—from Jamaican plantation owners to America’s original private eye, Glaswegian merchants to London revolutionaries, escaped American slaves to indomitable female crusaders fighting for America’s soul. They lived in a period of seismic historical events, legal reforms and moral shifts, with slavery at the centre. From a Scottish perspective,
Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment
gives a rich, diverse and dramatic account of this momentous period, while examining its relevance to our society today.
This talk will be held in the Reading Room of the Advocates Library, Parliament House, Edinburgh, in aid of the
Tumbling Lassie
campaign, which aims to raise awareness and funds for charities fighting against modern slavery and people trafficking and to help survivors in Scotland and beyond.
Doors will open from 5.30pm, with the talk commencing at 6pm, with drinks and canapes served thereafter from around 7pm.
John D O Fulton is an Edinburgh born lawyer and author. During a forty year career in property and trust law, he developed an international client base through regular visits to Hong Kong, Singapore and China over twenty three years. Amongst the appointments he has held are Treasurer of the Society of His Majesty’s Signet and Chair of the Clark Foundation for Legal Education. His widely praised first book,
66- the House that viewed the World
, was published in 2019.

Rucksack Readers
is the specialist publisher for long-distance trails celebrates 25 years of award-winning guidebooks for adventurous walkers and cyclists.
This year marks 25 years since Jacquetta Megarry founded the only guidebook publisher dedicated to long-distance trails for walkers and cyclists in the UK, probably in the world: the award-winning Rucksack Readers®.
Megarry founded Rucksack Readers® in 2000 to create guidebooks in a rucksack-friendly format. On her first long-distance walk, the West Highland Way, she had found the traditional design of the official guidebook impractical. Megarry thought she could do better and began to devise a waterproof, lightweight format with built-in mapping, optimised for the route. Rucksack Readers® are the result. They have become one of the UK’s bestselling guides to long distance walking in the UK and Ireland with more than 40 guidebooks in print.
Uniquely, Megarry tests the directions by walking the trails personally, and often works closely with the trail manager to improve the route itself. She devised the Rob Roy Way in 2001 and has remained deeply involved with its management and waymarking ever since.
Rucksack Readers® are printed on specially treated paper that resists rain and snow. They focus on the things which matter – rigorously field-tested route descriptions, built-in maps optimised for the route and 100 gorgeous photographs – all in the lightest and most weatherproof package on the market.
To commemorate this milestone, on 1 May Rucksack Readers®is launching a new Scottish title,
River Tay Way
, and revised editions of popular English routes (
Cumbria Way
and
Heart of the Cotswolds
) together with the
Wicklow Way
which starts in Dublin.
"I had the most wonderful time walking the Nidderdale Way and would recommend it as an ideal long-distance path."

Clare Balding, broadcaster and author

-
Lorraine Kelly, TV presenter and author
“The perfect companion for anyone wanting a modern, honest guide to making the most of the experience.”
