Write Your First Fiction Book: A Hands-on Workshop Series | 207 W Hastings St
Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Vancouver
Love Vancouver Holistic Center is proud to partner again with published author, editor, and artist Sheila Arellano to help you unlock your creativity and embark on a journey of personal transformation through storytelling!
This immersive 8-week writing course is designed to guide you through the process of crafting a compelling book from start to finish. Whether you're an aspiring writer with a few notes on paper OR you've got the whole outline down and looking for guidance on how to start, this course will provide you with the tools and framework to finally bring your story to life for readers everywhere!
You can join classes individually OR enroll for all 8 classes by following the instructions below. Attendance on all days is not required to get the benefits of this experience but it is recommended!
Here’s what you’ll experience:
Day 1 (June 1):
In the first class, writers will focus on creating a
compelling first chapter that hooks readers by crafting a strong opening line, introducing the protagonist, establishing the setting, and introducing conflict early on. Writers will learn to set the tone and narrative voice while drawing readers into the story. Participants will have a rough draft or revision of their first chapter by the end.
Day 2 (June 8):
The Inciting Incident class focuses on crafting a compelling event that disrupts the protagonist's world and propels the plot forward. This crucial moment introduces conflict, establishes stakes, and sets the story in motion. You'll learn how to effectively time the inciting incident and use it to reveal character
motivations and kick off the protagonist's journey.
Day 3 (June 15):
We’ll focus on writing obstacles and rising action to build tension and drive the plot forward to challenge the protagonist while deepening the conflict. Rising action escalates the stakes, keeping the story engaging and maintaining momentum toward the climax. You’ll learn how to balance smaller setbacks with major challenges to create a compelling narrative. This class will involve identifying key obstacles in your outline and writing a scene that escalates the tension
.
Day 4 (June 29):
In this class, we’ll craft a pivotal midpoint that shifts the direction of your story and heightens the stakes. The midpoint is a critical turning point that deepens the conflict, reveals new information, or forces the protagonist to change their approach. You’ll learn how to use this moment to raise the stakes and pivot the narrative, setting the stage for the final act. The exercise will involve identifying your midpoint and writing a scene that marks a clear turning point or escalation in tension.
Day 5 (July 6):
In the fifth class, we’ll focus on the latter half of Act 2, where the tension intensifies and the protagonist's journey builds toward the climax. This is crucial for escalating conflict, complicating the protagonist's goals, and deepening emotional stakes. You’ll learn how to maintain momentum after the midpoint by increasing obstacles, complicating character arcs, and setting up the final push toward the climax. The class will involve writing a scene where the protagonist faces increased challenges or complications.
Day 6 (July 13):
In this class, we’ll explore the Dark Moment and Crisis, two pivotal points in your story where the protagonist faces their greatest challenge and the
stakes are at their highest. The Dark Moment is when things seem bleakest, and the protagonist is forced to confront their deepest fears, failures, or vulnerabilities. The Crisis is the emotional turning point, where the protagonist must make a critical
decision. You’ll learn how to craft these moments to deepen character arcs and set the stage for the final confrontation.
Day 7 (July 20):
The Final Confrontation is the climax of your story, where the protagonist faces their greatest challenge. This moment is the culmination of all
the tension, conflict, and character growth, where the protagonist must use everything they've learned to make critical decisions that determine the story's outcome. In this class, we’ll focus on crafting a final confrontation that feels earned and impactful, emphasizing emotional stakes and resolution. Together, we will write or outline the key moments of your final confrontation.
Day 8 (July 27):
The Resolution and End is where your story’s conflict is fully resolved, and the narrative comes to a satisfying close. In this class, we’ll focus on wrapping up the story in a way that feels earned and fulfilling, providing closure for both the plot
and the protagonist's journey. We’ll discuss how to create a strong ending that resonates emotionally, whether it's happy, bittersweet, or open-ended, and how to leave the reader with a lasting impression. We will write the final scenes of your story, ensuring they tie up loose ends and deliver a meaningful conclusion.

Contribute: A Message to the Future
Join us to celebrate community giving and reflect on the legacy we'll leave for future generations.
The places we love; the cultures we enjoy; the natural resources we rely on. These assets have been entrusted to us by generations yet to come who—like us—will call southwest Washington home.
History will measure our legacy in every act of kindness we extend, every lesson we share and every cause we champion. How will you be remembered?
Keynote Speaker
Nichole June Maher
will share an inspiring message about how communities can pay tribute to future generations.
