SPIRITUS Portland | THE DEN

Portland
Join us for SPIRITUS
A deep journey inwards working with the power of our Breath to access altered states of consciousness.
This provides healing and integration of our nervous system, physical and emotional bodies and creates the space to remember who we truly are as whole beings.
As we breathe in a connected way, we come into our own rhythm, we access our bodies own innate healing power.
Our body remembers what our mind forgets.
Our body holds on to past memories, emotions and trauma. When we breathe deep and connected we give ourselves permission to release these suppressed energies from our body, we are able to let go and dissolve all that is no longer ours to hold any more.
And when we do so, we create spaciousness and freedom from within.
This is a personal healing journey.
Spiritus is a system where we use breath, sound and movement to release stuck, heavy energies from the body to create freedom and liberation within.

ganavya | SPACE
May 27, 2025 (UTC-4)
Portland
Described by Wall Street Journal as “among modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” New York-born, Tamil Nadu-raised singer and transdisciplinarian GANAVYA has announced details of an ambitious new album,
Daughter of a Temple
, due November 15, 2024. Released by Nils Frahm’s label, LEITER, on vinyl and via all digital platforms, it follows her appearance at SAULT’s 2023 live debut in London where, The Guardian wrote, her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks”. Her first single for the label, ‘draw something beautiful’, appeared earlier this year in July.
Daughter of a Temple
was recorded over a week in 2022 at the Moore’s Opera House in Houston, Texas, after GANAVYA had reached out to friends and associates over the preceding months to join her for “a gathering in and for devotion”. This was to draw on studies of what she terms the musico- philosophies of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, and she’d even promised herself she’d invite anyone who brought up Turiyasangitananda’s name around her. “You really shouldn’t do that,” she chuckles. “It turns out a lot of people talk about her!””
Consequently, the album – which also brings the Hindu tradition of harikatha into the 21st century – draws upon a vast cast of contributors across multiple disciplines, among them esperanza spalding, Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, Peter Sellars, Rajna Swaminathan, Charlotte Braithwaite, Chris Sholar, Darian Donovan Thomas, and Bindhumalini Narayanswamy. Her mother even helped cook for participants. The results, an innovative and deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music, were initially recorded and edited by Ryan Renteria, then further edited and mixed by Nils Frahm at LEITER’s Funkhaus studio in 2024.
In the spirit of Elder Wayne Shorter, who once said
“There is no such thing as a beginning and no such thing as an end,”
the album begins in the middle of it all, with GANAVYA joined by spalding for ‘A Love Chant,’ taken from an improvised concert performed on the last day of the ensemble’s ritual gathering. Iyer’s piano, quickly accompanied by Wilkins’ saxophone, then guides us through ‘Om Supreme’s uplifting ten minutes, while Elders Wayne and Carolina Shorter’s prayer (recorded at their home) lends ‘Elders Wayne and Carolina’ its name while reminding us they are always with us. ‘Journey In Satchitananda / Ghana Nila’ – edited from a 45-minute rendition performed by over thirty musicians, with dancers audible in the background – expands upon the bass line from one of Turiyasangitananda’s most recognisable prayers, and ‘Om Navah Sivaya’, the first song GANAVYA ever performed publicly, opens with Charles Overton on harp and features her nephew Krsna on guitar, as well as, arguably most importantly, her father and mother, among others, on guest vocals.
Though it was the first thing recorded, the album concludes with ‘A Love Supreme Parts 1-4’,
Daughter of a Temple
’s beating heart. “The first part is me playing the kalimba as an ode to Wadada Leo Smith’s 1995 ‘Love Supreme’,” GANAVYA explains. “The second is an ode to Peter Sellars, who’s reading for us from the seventh chapter of the
Vimalakirti Sutra
, ‘The Goddess’, on the nature of love. Then the third is open – we dedicate that to Alice – and the fourth is IONE,
(American composer)
Pauline Oliveros’ wife, reading a poem she had written for us.”
Of course, if you ask GANAVYA – raised in India’s southernmost state and withdrawn from school at a young age to study music with her family – what first inspired her to make this remarkable record, her answer is typically honest. “Loneliness,” she replies, before gently, thoughtfully elaborating. “You were raised in a village, then one day you wake up and you’re a graduate student at Harvard. The life you live doesn’t make sense to people back home anymore, and what you’re seeking is that sense of village, so you invite as many people as possible.”
That said, building a village, even a temporary shelter, requires cash. “I thought I’d call ten people and maybe five would say yes,” GANAVYA recalls softly, “but all ten said yes, then another forty said yes, and before we knew it, it was
‘Where is someone like me going to get the money to do something like this?’
And it doesn’t really make sense that a graduate student was able to afford this, but every step of the way there was a grace much larger than me.”
Thus, as is often the way with GANAVYA, things worked out miraculously. She is, after all, a woman whose path has led from a childhood spent dancing and singing on the pilgrimage trail to earning four degrees – including at Berklee College of Music, UCLA and Harvard, to whom she was recommended by Quincy Jones – and on to 2024’s ‘like the sky I’ve been too quiet’, her most recent album. Featuring contributions from Floating Points, Tom Herbert, Carlos Niño and Leafcutter John, it was recorded with Shabaka Hutchings and released on his Native Rebel label.
So, yes… it may have been chance that won the grant which helped establish
Daughter of a Temple
, and perhaps it was luck the opera house was available, and maybe a landlord would have offered six beautiful houses in a single street to
anyone
who asked, and it could even be that a temple sharing the name of an Alice Coltrane track regularly handed out $10,000 to pay for strangers’ flights. And sure, coincidence might have ensured cousins from India she hadn’t seen in years would be performing at New York’s Metropolitan Museum around the time, and that Vijay Iyer, whose father had visited her in dreams, would be in Houston anyway, and that Berklee’s Ryan Renteria was available to record the proceedings. But, then again…
Really?
Keen to emphasise the manner in which rituality resides in spirituality, GANAVYA began the first day by presenting everyone with customized prayer beads, then washed their feet with honey, turmeric and warm water before they improvised around Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’. “After that,” she recalls, “people started realising that they knew each other.” What followed was an extraordinary experience in pursuit of a common goal, a coming together of people, beliefs and musical styles as much as a mysterious, unfathomable coming home. “We were moving with the contour of a village, deciding in real time to make music which sometimes involved forty people singing, then suddenly the entire group was doing a version of
The Rite Of Spring
and dancing.”
And this magic isn’t restricted to participants.
Daughter of a Temple’
s purpose, GANAVYA will tell you, is that people “know there’s a village for you, always in the ether. The worlds we dream of are possible when we come at it with the right amount of discipline and devotion. I hope that’s what resonates with them, that it tells the story of this random girl who dreamed of this world and then it manifested itself. I hope it makes them feel less alone, because that’s what it did for me. I think of it as proof that prayer works and love exists…”

Lynn Steger Strong's THE FLOAT TEST with Rebecca Traister | Mechanics' Hall
May 29, 2025 (UTC-4)

, a sophisticated and layered novel about sisters, betrayal, love, and climate change.

No one turned away for lack of funds.
A
BOUT THE BOOK
The Kenner siblings are at odds. Jenn is a harried mom struggling under the weight of family obligations. Fred is a novelist who can’t write, maybe because she’s lost faith in storytelling itself. Jude is a recovering corporate lawyer with her own story to tell, and a grudge against her former favorite sister, Fred. George, the baby, is estranged from his wife and harboring both a secret about his former employer and an ill-advised crush on one of his sisters’ friends. Gathered after a major loss, each sibling needs the others more than ever—if only they could trust each other.
A family story is, of course, only as honest as the person telling it. This family story in particular is fraught with secrets about kids and sex and jobs and why the Kenner matriarch had a gun in her underwear drawer. The biggest secret of all though is the secret of what happened between Jude and Fred to create such a rift between the two once-close middle sisters. Over the course of a sweltering Florida summer, the Kenner siblings will revisit what it means to be a family and, if they are smart and kind and lucky, come out on the other side better for having each other.
A rich exploration of family, ambition, secrets, and love,
The Float Test
is an elegant and gripping testament to the power that family has to both nurture and destroy us from a critically acclaimed writer working at the top of her craft.

The unprecedented undertaking, code-named “Operation Moses,” was a three-way collaboration between the Mossad, the CIA and Sudanese State Security (SSS) to smuggle nearly 8,000 Beta Israel out of Ethiopia, where they faced hardship and persecution, in a massive airlift to Israel. Operation Moses turned out to be the beginning of large-scale, official Israeli efforts to facilitate Beta Israel
aliyah
that continued for decades thereafter.
Larry Rubinstein, Maine resident, ordained rabbi, and former Director of the Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, was a key player in Operation Moses. Join us as he walks us through his riveting personal story against the backdrop of one of the most remarkable rescue missions in modern history. An Ethiopian buffet dinner to follow the presentation and Q&A, and the paintings of Ethiopian-born Israeli Artist Tigist Yoseph Ron (who came to Israel through Operation Moses) will be on display and available for viewing and purchase.
About the Guest Presenter:
Larry Rubinstein was ordained as a Rabbi in 1965 and served congregations in Omaha and Philadelphia for 13 years before going into administrative and fundraising work in the Jewish community. He served as Director of the Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, and Senior Vice President of Brandeis University, where he ran the University’s first Capital Campaign in 1987and was Senior Vice President of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He also served in several other positions in the Jewish community. Before retiring to Maine, he also served as President of the Association of Alumni of Columbia College (Columbia University) and was a member of several other nonprofit Boards.
In Maine, Larry has served on the Board of the Bowdoin International Music Festival and was President of the Board of the Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ. He was on the Board of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine from 2004 to 2016, serving as Board President from 2011-2015. Alison Bechdel at Powell's City of Books | Powell's City of Books
May 29, 2025 (UTC-7)
Portland
The celebrated and beloved author of the modern classic
Fun Home
presents
Spent
(Mariner Books), a laugh-out-loud, brilliant, and passionately political work of autofiction. In Alison Bechdel’s hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege? Meanwhile, Alison’s first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It’s a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel’s beloved comic strip
Dykes to Watch Out For
). As the TV show
Death and Taxidermy
racks up Emmy after Emmy — and when Alison’s Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral — Alison’s own envy spirals. Why couldn’t
she
be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show… like
Queer Eye
… showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!!
Spent
’s rollicking and masterful denouement — making the case for seizing what’s true about life in the world at this moment, before it’s too late — once again proves that “nobody does it better” (
New York Times Book Review
) than the real Alison Bechdel.
Please join us in welcoming Alison Bechdel to Portland and Powell’s Books.
Please note:
This is a ticketed event. Tickets include admission, as well as one hardcover copy of
Spent
. Books will be distributed at the event.

About Queer Devotion: Spirituality Beyond the Binary in Myth, Story, and Practice:
A liberating exploration of the queer divine in deities and figures of myth and legend that opens pathways for LGBTQIA+ people to revere the divinity within and create an affirming spiritual practice.
Queer people have always existed and queerness has always been divine.
Queer Devotion
, by tarot teacher and deck creator Charlie Claire Burgess, reminds us of this by re-examining sacred stories through a queer and gender expansive lens. With exercises, reflection prompts, and ritual suggestions, readers can discover a deeper spiritual relationship with themselves and the divine and begin building an affirming personal practice of self-defined queer devotion.
From gay Greek gods to genderfluid Norse ones, from transgender Catholic saints to queer Arthurian legends,
Queer Devotion
reveals that spirituality has always been far queerer than we’ve been led to believe. In the beginning, the gods were queer—and they still are.

Welcome to the local Premiere of "Counted Out" hosted by Portland Community College!

Counted Out Film Trailer
More about “Counted Out”
“Counted Out” investigates the biggest crises of our time. Political polarization. Racial biases. Social injustice. Economic inequity. Climate change. And a global pandemic. All viewed through a previously unseen lens: math.
In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we can access, the jobs we get is all underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice.
But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy — whether we can speak the language of math — is a critical determinant of social and economic power.
Through a mosaic of personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, “Counted Out” shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people?” Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society — and can help shape it?
The film’s voices include the late civil rights icon Robert Moses as well as Talithia Williams, associate professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd University and TEDx speaker of “
Own Your Body’s Data
,” Julia Angwin, investigative journalist and founder of
Proof
, Steven Levitt, co-author of “Freakonomics.”
