About The Pacific Circuit . .In Pacific Circuit, the award-winning journalist Alexis Madrigal sculpts an intricate tableau of the city of Oakland that is at once a groundbreaking big-idea book, a deeply researched work of social and political history, and an intimate portrait of an essential American city that has been at the crossroads of the defining themes of the twenty-first century.
Oakland’s stories encompass everything from Silicon Valley’s prominence and the ramifications of a compulsively digital future to the underestimated costs of technological innovation on local communities—all personified in this changing landscape for the city’s lifelong inhabitants.
Pacific Circuit holds a magnifying glass to the scars etched by generations of systemic segregation and the ceaseless march of technological advancement. These are not just abstract concepts; they are embedded in the very fabric of Oakland and its people, from dockworkers and community organizers to real estate developers and businesses chasing the highest possible profits. Madrigal delves into city hall politics, traces the intertwining arcs of venture capital and hedge funds, and offers unprecedented insight into Silicon Valley’s genesis and growth, all against the backdrop of Oakland—a city vibrating with untold stories and unexplored connections that can, when read carefully, reveal exactly how our markets and our world really function. Alexis Madrigal is a journalist who lives in Oakland, California. He is a staff writer at The Atlantic and a cofounder of the COVID Tracking Project. Previously, he was the editor in chief of Fusion and a staff writer at Wired. He has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley’s Information School and its Center for the Study of Technology, Science, and Medicine as well as an affiliate with Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. He is the author of Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology. (Photo credit: Miya Hirayabashi) Angela Garbes is the author of Essential Labor: Mothering as Social Change, called “a landmark and a lightning storm” by the New Yorker. Essential Labor was named a Best Book of 2022 by both the New Yorker and NPR. Her first book, Like a Mother, was also an NPR Best Book of the Year as well as a finalist for the Washington State Book Award in nonfiction. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, New York, and featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. A first-generation Filipina American, Garbes lives with her family on Beacon Hill. Sunbeam Sound Machine is the project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Nick Sowersby. Emerging from Melbourne, Australia in 2013 with the lo-fi double-EP One/Sunbeam Sound Machine, the project quickly found a devoted audience worldwide.
2014’s debut album Wonderer led to international touring and has established itself as a cult classic of the modern psychedelic pop era. Follow-up Goodness Gracious was nominated for the 2019 Australian Music Prize and led to further international touring, while the synth-heavy pop of 2022’s Possum saw the project reach new creative heights. The release of the Soft Signal EP in 2024 traded in the intricately layered sound of previous releases for ‘a stripped-back yet profoundly beautiful sonic experience’ (Happy Mag).
Sowersby’s trademark lush production, tip-toeing the line between euphoria and heartbreak, has garnered more than 70 million streams and established a dedicated global fanbase that continues to grow with each release.

Westerlies Fest 2025: The Past Delivers - Music for Ballet | Good Shepherd Center
Apr 9, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Seattle
The Westerlies
The Westerlies are a New York-based brass quartet comprised of childhood friends from Seattle: Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands on trumpet, and Andy Clausen and Addison Maye-Saxon on trombone.
Formed in 2011, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from the West to the East. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s Fresh Air), The Westerlies explore jazz, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both "folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). Equally at home in concert halls and living rooms, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues and projects with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along.

Join us for a night of Sex Trivia at Stoup Brewing's Capitol Hill Location!
This monthly event is the best way to learn about and celebrate pleasure, queerness, and the science of sex! We kick off the evening with a brief introduction, then dive right into sex trivia. Trivia teams consist of 4-5 people. You can bring your friends and make your own team, or show up and join/create a team on the spot! All identities and backgrounds are welcome. Trivia questions cover a wide variety of sex and sexuality-related topics, so get ready to challenge yourself, learn something new, and have a good time. There will be PRIZES for the winning teams!
Note that Sex Trivia now takes place 2 times per month.
The questions will be repeated, so please select only one of the two events to attend. The other Sex Trivia will take place on April 17th at Reuben's in Ballard (Barrel Room).
Pricing details:
A portion of each ticket will be donated to the
Queer Sick Pay Fund
(qSPF). This Fund provides sick pay to Queer performers in nightlife spaces who live and work in Seattle, WA. This protects queer artists and community from financial and physical harm by incentivising artists to stay home when not feeling well. We believe that the financial and physical health of Queer People guarantees that Seattle will thrive. Queer nightlife performers often live paycheck to paycheck, and the loss of even a single gig can be devastating. Other industries have systems of protection and guaranteed sick pay, but Queers just have each other, so Betty Wetter and Drama Tops came together to create this safety net for their community.
To best support the Queer Sick Pay Fund and your trivia hosts, we recommend the $15 ticket, but please choose the ticket price that is best for you and your circumstances.

About
Rabbit Rabbit
.
. .
Twelve-year-olds Alice and Bee are practically strangers when their grandparents’ anniversary party reunites their estranged families and ignites their own fast friendship.
But their reunion doesn’t last long—Bee’s mother and grandfather are dead set on keeping the liberal Seattle faction of the family away from the conservative Minnesota crew. “
It’s complicated
,” the grown ups tell them over and over (and over!) again.
Bee and Alice grow closer despite their geographical distance, determined to keep their friendship going—and to uncover the big family secret. What happened all those years ago, and why did it tear their family apart?
Just when they've started to make progress, the COVID pandemic strikes. Bee and Alice watch as the world shuts down and their loved ones grow further divided along their fractured lines. Somehow, it’s up to the twelve-year-olds to clean up the mess that the grown ups have made.
This powerful, timely story cuts deep, touching on recent historic events and intimate family details alike. With an age-appropriate approach,
Rabbit Rabbit
tackles religion, sexuality, bodily autonomy, and other juicy stuff you're not supposed to talk about at Thanksgiving.
