2001: A Space Odyssey
is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by
Stanley Kubrick
. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Its plot was inspired by several short stories optioned from Clarke, primarily "The Sentinel" (1951) and "Encounter in the Dawn" (1953). The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain. It follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL 9000 to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.
The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous themes. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and long sequences are accompanied only by music. Shunning the convention that major film productions should feature original music,
2001: A Space Odyssey
takes for its soundtracknumerous works of classical music, including pieces by Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and György Ligeti.Polarising critics after its release, 2001: A Space Odyssey has since been subject to a variety of interpretations, ranging from the darkly apocalyptic to an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity. Critics noted its exploration of themes such as human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Kubrick the award for his direction of the visual effects, the only Academy Award the director would receive.
The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. In 1991,
it was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Cactus Theater presents: Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder!
Thursday, May 15, 2025
Doors: 6:50 pm • Showtime: 7:30 pm
Ricky Skaggs
Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner
Ricky Skaggs
’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact, consider that legendary guitarist
Chet Atkins
once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact.
Born July 18, 1954 in Cordell, Kentucky, Skaggs showed signs of future stardom at an early age, playing mandolin on stage with bluegrass pioneer
Bill Monroe
at 6 and appearing on TV with
Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs
at 7. He emerged as a professional bluegrass musician in 1971, when he and his friend
Keith Whitley
were invited to join the legendary
Ralph Stanley
’s band the
Clinch Mountain Boys
. Skaggs then went on to record and perform with progressive bluegrass acts like the
Country Gentlemen
and
J.D. Crowe & The New South
, whose self-titled 1975 Rounder Records debut album was instantly recognized as a landmark bluegrass achievement. He then led
Boone Creek
, which also featured dobro ace and fellow New South alumnus
Jerry Douglas
.
But Skaggs turned to the more mainstream country music genre in the late ‘70s when he joined
Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band
, replacing
Rodney Crowell
. He became a recording artist in his own right in 1981 when his Epic label debut album
Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine
topped the country charts and yielded a pair of #1 hits. Overall, his productive stay at Epic Records would result in a total of
12 #1 hits
. Additionally, he garnered
eight (8) Country Music Association (CMA) awards
- including the coveted
Entertainer of the Year
trophy in 1985.
Skaggs, of course, fit right in with young “new-traditionalist” ‘80s artists like
Randy Travis
, and helped rejuvenate the country music genre after the worn-out “Urban Cowboy” period. But, Skaggs put his own stamp on the country format by infusing his bluegrass and traditional country music roots into the contemporary Nashville sound. His 1997 album
Bluegrass Rules!
, released on his newly-formed
Skaggs Family Records
label, marked a triumphant return to bluegrass—which he’s solidified ever since with a series of GRAMMY® Award winning albums, recorded with his amazing bluegrass band,
Kentucky Thunder
(8-time winners of the IBMA ‘Instrumental Group of the Year’). Skaggs’ label has also served as a home for similar bluegrass and roots music-oriented artists including
The Whites
.
In the past decade, he has been honored with inductions into the Gospel Music Association’s
Gospel Music Hall of Fame
and the
Musicians Hall of Fame
. In 2018, a landmark year, Skaggs was also awarded membership into the
National Fiddler Hall of Fame
, the IBMA
Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame
and country music’s greatest honor, the
Country Music Hall of Fame
. Most recently, he was awarded the prestigious
National Medal of Arts
in 2020 for his contributions to the American music industry.
Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 60 years ago, and he continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. Clearly his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world.
Ricky Skaggs
is always forging ahead with cross-cultural, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations. Ricky Skaggs has often said that he is “just trying to make a living” playing the music he loves. But it’s clear that his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. Ricky is always forging ahead with cross-cultural, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations.

The Outsiders
is a 1983 American coming-of-age crime drama film
directed by Francis Ford Coppola
. The film is an adaptation of the 1967 novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton and was released on March 25, 1983, in the United States. Jo Ellen Misakian, a librarian at Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno, California, and her students were responsible for inspiring Coppola to make the film.
The film is notable for its then up-and-coming cast members, including C. Thomas Howell (who garnered a Young Artist Award),
Rob Lowe
in his feature film debut,
Emilio Estevez
,
Matt Dillon
,
Tom Cruise
,
Patrick Swayze
,
Ralph Macchio
, and
Diane Lane
. It would also spark the
Brat Pack genre
of the 1980s, while Dillon himself starred in two more films based on Hinton novels: Tex (1982), with Estevez, and Coppola's Rumble Fish (1983), with Lane. Estevez also wrote and starred in the Hinton adaptation That Was Then...This Is Now (1985). The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, most notably for its performances, and performed well at the box office, grossing $25.7 million on a $10 million budget. Over the years, the film has earned a cult following and has spawned a 1990 sequel television series and a successful 2023 stage musical.

Casey James - Up Close and Personal - Live at Cactus Theater!
Friday, May 23, 2025
Doors 6:50 pm • Showtime 7:30 pm
Casey James
rose to national attention and became a household name overnight as a contestant on
American Idol
. Using his fierce instrumental skills, emotional tenor and musical talent, he landed high among the finalists, third to be exact. After over a decade of playing shows as a local musician in the DFW area, James suddenly had opportunities he had only dreamed of. The success he experienced during the show brought him a recording contract with a major
country label. He took the offer, although the tight creative limitations on commercial country overlapped only partially with the music at the center of his soul. James made the opportunity work. He landed hits with
“Let’s Don’t Call It A Night”
and
“Crying on A Suitcase”
– however, the three-minute time frames and limits on instrumental playing did not allow him to showcase his artistic vision. Five years and four radio singles later, James left his major label deal with hopes of being able to make music without limitations.
With his 2017 album
Strip It Down
, he made the blues project he’d always envisioned - introducing his music to a whole new demographic, which was well-received worldwide. Teaming up with Grammy Award-winning producter
Tom Hambridge
was a great start - and James was left with a record that garnered rave reviews from Blues/Rock/Americana media outlets and fans across the world – with the
Rock Doctor
raving that that
Strip It Down
was “one hell of a delightful surprise!” He had finally busted into the scene he’d always wanted to be a part of.
With his 2020 follow-up,
If You Don’t Know By Now
, James dug in deeper on the genre, exploring its range while setting himself apart as an inspired, melodic guitarist as well as an expressive, soulful vocalist. It’s a stark commitment to a musical form lodged firmly in his soul. James attacked the new record with a new level of confidence, thanks in part to his affirming experience with
Strip It Down
.
“We need to remind humanity what music is about,” James says. “It's not about money. It's not about fame. At the end of the day, you can remove all that, take away technology, take away marketing, but the music will remain. It's un-killable. As long as human beings live, music will remain, and that brings me joy.”
“Real-life-inspired lyricism and multi-genre stylistic influences – which melds the blues, jazz, country, and southern rock...an easy-listen and strong appeal to a wide variety of music lovers.

Shinyribs - Back by Popular Request - Live at Cactus Theater!
Wednesday, June 11, 2025
Doors: 6:50 • Showtime: 7:30 pm
We may never know what Shinyribs is. Sometimes, it’s a sprawling multi-piece ensemble slapping the air until it grooves; sometimes he’s a somber subtle songwriter pouring poetry on the ground from a cup half full. Either way it’s always the house-party-meets-library that is,
Kevin Russell.
Raised in Beaumont, TX, and Shreveport, LA—the cradle of swamp pop, Leadbelly, and bayou R&B—Russell distills those regional sounds into something both timeless and immediate, dripping from his fingers like honey, salt & fat. Think Texas Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals, songs carved and weaved by hand with a storyteller’s heart. Shinyribs evolved from a solo residency Russell began under that moniker in the mid-2000s, after an incident in a Houston club, playing a private party for a group of welders where he bought a homeless woman a plate of ribs. “Her name was Roberta,” says Russell. “She was a high priestess of transistor radios and an almost forgotten music she called ‘Chilibump.’ For that plate of Ribs that night she gave me in return a name, Shinyribs and a road map to the mysterious big thicket sounds I had only heard of from old timers and time travelers.”
With the album
Leaving Time
,
produced by
David Beck
(Texan Weekend, Blue Healer), Russell parks the party bus behind the venue and sits in a lawn chair in the street lights with the bugs and a dingy moon. Joined by extraordinary bassist, arranger and co-producer,
Mason Hankamer
, keyboardist
Jonny Keys
(Uncle Lucius), drummer
Dees Stribling
and Mr. Beck singing gourd-like harmonies while handling multiple Instrumental touches,
Leaving Time
is a departure and an arrival showcase of Russell’s long evolution as a classic Texas songwriter. The songs reconnect with Russell’s literary roots, the folk and country influences that shaped his work with
The Gourds
, and the ever-present irreverence guiding his musical journey since his early years.
Kevin Russell -
Shinyribs
- invites you into his junkyard of juke, his shack of shakin’ souls, for a Sunday evening sit down, a slow sound for a sweet night. When the time is just right for Leaving, let ya mind wander into believing. It’s Leaving Time.
