Garrison Keillor Tonight - Live at Cactus Theater! Tuesday, January 21, 2025 Doors: 6:50 pm. • Showtime: 7:30 pm Garrison Keillor Tonight is an evening of stand-up, storytelling, audience song, and poetry. One man, one microphone. There are sung sonnets, limericks andmusical jokes, and the thread that runs through it is the beauty of growing old.Despite the inconvenience, old age brings the contentment of LESS IS MORE.Your mistakes and big ambitions are behind you, nothing left to prove, and smallthings give you great pleasure because that’s what’s left. (“I was unhappy incollege because it was a requirement for an intellectual, but then I went into showbusiness and discovered that people won’t pay to be made unhappy, their kids willdo it for free.”) There is the News from Lake Wobegon, a town booming with new entrepreneurs, makers of artisanal firewood and gourmet meatloaf, breeders of compostingworms, and dogs trained to do childcare. But some things endure, such as theformation of the Living Flag on Main Street, citizens in tight formation wearingred, white or blue caps, and Mr. Keillor among them, standing close to oldneighbors, Myrtle Krebsbach (“Truckstop”) and Julie Christensen (“Bruno, TheFishing Dog”) and Clint Bunsen. And an a cappella sing-along with the audiencesinging from memory an odd medley of patriotic songs, pop standards, hymns, andending with the national anthem. Cactus Classic Cinema: “The Sting” (1973) Rated PG - starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford - 7:20 pm
Wednesday, April 23, 2025
Doors: 7 pm • Show: 7:20 pm
The Sting
is a 1973 American
caper film
. Set in 1936, it involves a complicated plot by two professional
grifters
(
Paul Newman
and
Robert Redford
) to
con
a mob boss (
Robert Shaw
). The film was directed by
George Roy Hill
, who had directed Newman and Redford in
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(1969). The screenplay, by
David S. Ward
, was inspired by real-life cons perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and documented by
David Maurer
in his 1940 book
The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man
.
The film plays out in sections introduced by old-fashioned
title cards
, drawn by artist Jaroslav "Jerry" Gebr in a style reminiscent of the
Saturday Evening Post
. It is noted for its use of
ragtime
, particularly the melody "
The Entertainer
" by
Scott Joplin
, which was adapted (along with other Joplin pieces) for the film by
Marvin Hamlisch
, producing a
Billboard
-topping
soundtrack
and a
top-10
single
. The film's success created a resurgence of interest in Joplin's work.
Released on Christmas of 1973,
The Sting
was a critical and commercial success and hugely successful at the
46th Academy Awards
, where it won seven of its 10
Oscar
nominations, including
Best Picture
,
Best Director
,
Best Film Editing
and
Best Original Screenplay
; Redford was also nominated for
Best Actor
. The film rekindled Newman's career after a series of big-screen flops. Regarded by the
Writers Guild of America
as having one of the best screenplays ever written,
The Sting
was selected in 2005 for preservation in the U.S.
National Film Registry
of the
Library of Congress
as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A
sequel film
, also written by Ward, was released in 1983.

2001: A Space Odyssey
is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by
Stanley Kubrick
. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Its plot was inspired by several short stories optioned from Clarke, primarily "The Sentinel" (1951) and "Encounter in the Dawn" (1953). The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain. It follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL 9000 to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.
The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous themes. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and long sequences are accompanied only by music. Shunning the convention that major film productions should feature original music,
2001: A Space Odyssey
takes for its soundtracknumerous works of classical music, including pieces by Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and György Ligeti.Polarising critics after its release, 2001: A Space Odyssey has since been subject to a variety of interpretations, ranging from the darkly apocalyptic to an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity. Critics noted its exploration of themes such as human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Kubrick the award for his direction of the visual effects, the only Academy Award the director would receive.
The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. In 1991,
it was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
