Pillar To Post By Sam Wright | Photobookcafe
Oct 29, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Sam found his passion for photography photographing D.I.Y punk gigs in pub basements around his home town of Sheffield. Sam’s approach to photography is about story telling, creating connections with both people and places and finding beauty in the overlooked and everyday. He documents his experiences in a considered, stylised, colourful and tangible way, for personal, editorial and commissioned projects. Sam’s work always centres around beautiful light, whether natural or recreated. Sams work has been recognised by respected awards and galleries including: The NPG, D&AD Awards, Lürzer's Archive, Creative Review, Its Nice That, Palm Studios I was first drawn to photograph this community after hearing about a relative who was from Irish Traveller heritage but denounced her heritage and past when she married. Although I have never lived this life, I had a strong interest and wanted to learn more about the community. My first port of call was Appleby horse fair, one of the largest and oldest meets in the Gypsy and Traveller calendar. Before I went to the fair, I had my first encounters with prejudice as multiple people advised against attending the fair. What I found when I was there was that I was welcomed by families with warm hearts, met people full of passion, and discovered a strong resilience towards a way of life that is becoming harder to maintain each day. It was very clear that many people have misunderstood Travellers and Gypsies, and I was shocked by the open prejudice towards this community. I wanted to tell the real story of the people I met and counter the misrepresentative media portrayal. Over two years, I've immersed myself in this world, travelling to horse fairs across the UK and Ireland, conducting interviews, carrying out research, meeting inspiring people and documenting my experiences through photography and film. As mounting challenges threaten the Traveller and Gypsy communities, I believe it's time for a positive change in attitudes, and I hope this project contributes to that shift.

London
Expressive Movement and Dance Improvisation Workshop These workshops are designed to help you express yourself through movement and reach a flow state —a positive mental state where you are completely absorbed in an activity, losing track of time and self-consciousness. As a dancer and a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT), I weave in elements of CBT to help you let go of any thoughts or self-consciousness that may be blocking you from expressing yourself freely through movement. During this workshop, you will learn to: Develop awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and physiology.Explore and generate authentic movements.Connect with the music and develop your musicality.Connect with others through movement. The last 15-30 minutes of the workshop will feature a group improvisation and jam, giving you the chance to play freely with all the tools covered. To get a sense of my movement style and quality, check out my videos here. As the tasks are improvisational, this workshop is open to all levels of movers, allowing you to engage with each task within your own abilities. Please note that the class will include some partner work and physical contact with others. I have set the cost for this workshop as a donation so that money isn't a barrier to participation. For those who can afford it, the suggested donation is between £5-£15 but any donation is welcome. If you are unable to donate but you would like to come, please message me directly (d.rodriguez@hotmail.co.uk) and I will add you to the list no questions asked. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or message me via Instagram. I'm looking forward to moving with you! About MeMy name is Daniel Rodriguez. I'm a registered Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and a dancer with the contemporary dance company Human Movement. I am particularly interested in how these two parts of my life intersect. I took my first dance class at the age of 27, and over the past 7 years, I have explored a variety of movement styles such as freestyle dance, contemporary, dance psychotherapy, Gaga, German Tanztheatre, Butoh, ballet, and many others. I have integrated my favorite aspects from these classes with elements of my psychological practice to help people connect with their bodies, the music, and each other.

Brownman's HALLOWEEN THRILLER (London) 2024 - MJ as electric-jazz, 7pm | Storm Stayed Brewing Company
Oct 29, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
London
HALLOWEEN THRILLER 2024 :: www.Thriller.Brownman.comAcclaimed jazz / hip-hop trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI will once again lead an all-star quartet through his popular annual Halloween Thriller concert, this year travelling to multiple cities across Southern Ontario. The much lauded BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO + 1 will perform the entire Michael Jackson Thriller recording, interpreted and re-worked in the Miles Davis-esque fashion this multiple National Jazz Award winning improviser has become known for. In addition to the quartet performing Thriller from top to bottom, other MJ classics will be featured through the night for this unique Halloween Series jazz party at London's Storm Stayed Brewing Co. This show features as it's +1 acclaimed keyboardist NICK MACLEAN, a rising star in Toronto's jazz community, signee to Brownman's Browntasauras Records label & winner of 10 Global Music Awards, standing alongside 2 of Toronto's most in demand musicians : MATT GRUEBNER on bass (from New Zealand, now in Canada), and ADAM MANSFIELD on drums (a 22-year old drumset phenom), all under the direction of 2x National Jazz Award winning modern jazz trumpet iconoclast BROWNMAN ALI. Please visit www.Thriller.Brownman.com for more info on this year's Halloween Thriller Series. Delving so deeply into that record always leaves us speechless , states Ali. Michael birthed so many incredible tunes over the years, but his collaborations with Quincy Jones on Thriller has to be one of the most towering musical achievements in pop music ever. Using that brilliant material every year on Halloween, as jump-offs for what we do makes for a party that's both danceable, but still rooted in exploratory improvising and deep reaching solos. We approach it the way Miles might have. The BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO has won a National Jazz Award, 3 Toronto Independent Music Awards, a SOCAN music award, a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, and an International Independent Music Award for Jazz-Funk album of the year for their latest release Gravitation , which hit number 4 on the iTunes USA jazz charts upon it's release. “Awards are nice, naturally, but to dig what Brownman is doing, you’ve got to see him live. I had a chance to do just that over the summer when Brownman fronted his killer trio ... I came away with a blown mind. This guy’s got chops galore, soul to match, and a sense of phrasing that recalls many of the greats, but suggests itself to be his own.”-- The Buffalo News on the latest slew of awards for the Brownman Electryc Trio---- Tue-Oct-29 -- LONDON @ Storm Stayed Brewing Co. 169 Whamcliffe Rd. Splitting his time between Toronto and New York, he tirelessly leads 8 unique ensembles of his own including the internationally acclaimed Miles Davis influenced BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO, and the award-winning CRUZAO latin-jazz quintet. All these ensembles record under Brownman's own much lauded BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS label, established in 2009. Join us for an extraordinary life drawing event that merges the dynamic worlds of dance and sculpture. Inspired by the avant-garde choreography of Pina Bausch and the organic forms of Tony Cragg, this session invites artists of all levels to capture the essence of movement and form through expressive drawing. In this unique session, live models will embody the fluid, emotive gestures of Bausch’s dance-theater, while their poses are influenced by the fluid, sculptural shapes found in Cragg’s abstract art. Expect an immersive experience where movement, shape, and line intertwine, offering endless possibilities for interpretation. Pose lengths will vary from continuous movement, 1,3,5,10 & 15 minute poses throughout the 2 hours class. Whether you are a seasoned artist or a beginner, this event offers a space to explore the human form in motion, inspired by two masters of their respective disciplines. Charting Constellations: Late | Central Saint Martins
Oct 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Join us in the Lethaby Gallery at CSM for a unique evening centred around the themes of queerness and DIY, where we delve deeper into the vast constellation of identities that shape our creative practices.
In line with the themes of current exhibition The Observatory, this gathering invites participants to explore queerness not just as a matter of sexuality - but as a broader lens through which we can examine design, race, gender, and the concept of ‘otherness.’
This relaxed ‘late’ event will feature engaging conversations, shared meals, and collaborative workshops, creating an intimate space for connection and creativity. As we come together, we’ll physically archive our experiences by crafting a collaborative map that charts our diverse perspectives on queerness within creative practice.
Open to all, this event serves as a reflective conclusion to The Observatory exhibition, encouraging voices to be heard.
Bring your ideas and appetite for dialogue along as we celebrate queerness in all its forms.
Event produced by the CSM Lethaby Gallery student producers.
