Over a decade since his passing, Kelley’s reflections on identity and memory continue to resonate. Embodied Aesthetics in the Immersive City | University of London Institute in Paris
Oct 3, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Ealing
Join Professor Christoph Lindner, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Royal College of Art, for a talk on the digital-spatial strategies that cities like London are using to revivify urban public spaces in the wake of the pandemic. Drawing on findings from his recently published book Aesthetics of Gentrification, Professor Lindner argues that many cities worldwide are experiencing a rise in embodied aesthetic practices – rooted in digital/immersive forms of urbanism – following the restrictions of lockdown and social distancing. Far from being unique to London or the post-pandemic moment, these practices have a long, deep history tied to the neoliberal project of post-industrial renewal. The difference now is that the after-effects of the pandemic, combined with new digital technologies of simulation and immersion, are making it possible to remake cities in more extreme and divisive ways. As cities recover from the pandemic and urban publics return to the shared spaces of the city, there is urgency in understanding these transformations and their effects on contemporary urban life.

Bhanu Kapil writes poetry and fiction. She has been awarded a Windham Campbell Prize for Poetry (Yale University), and a Cholmondeley Award, also for poetry (Society of Authors, UK). A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, she is the author of six full length collections: How To Wash A Heart (Pavilion Poetry, 2020), Ban en Banlieue (Nightboat Books, 2016), Schizophrene (Nightboat Books, 2011), humanimal (Kelsey Street Press, 2009), Incubation: a Space for Monsters (Leon Works, 2006), and The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers (Kelsey Street Press, 2001). How To Wash A Heart was the winner of the TS Eliot Prize and a Poetry Book Society Choice. In 2023, two new, non-identical editions of Incubation: a space for monsters were published, by Prototype (UK) and Kelsey Street Press (USA). Based at Churchill College, Cambridge, as an Extraordinary Fellow, Bhanu is writing the archive of Enoch Powell. With Blue Pieta, she has been developing performances of many kinds. Blue Pieta is a director, choreographer, dramaturge, performer and writer. Their practice explores ritual, ancient mythology and embodied poetics. They studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and the History of Art at Cambridge University and trained in performance at: Sadlers Wells, Impulstanz Vienna, Siobhan Davies and the National Youth Theatre. Their works have been staged at the Royal Court Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre and Courtauld Insititute of Fine Art. Blue was also the dramaturg for the contemporary Chinese Operetta Nine Songs which debuted in the AlUlah desert Saudi Arabia, directed by Farooq Chaudhry, with musical direction from Jocelyn Pook. How to Wash a Heart depicts the complex relations that emerge between an immigrant guest and a citizen host. Drawn from a first performance at the ICA in London in 2019, it begins to ask difficult and urgent questions about the limits of inclusion, hospitality and care. This exciting staged performance of Kapil's award-winning collection will feature musical performances from Kath Gifford and Ynys Barnard-Masterson and dance from Samantha Hines. The myth of the artist working alone in the studio overlooks the contributions of many uncredited workers involved in the production, circulation, display, and maintenance of artworks. To highlight their contributions, participants—including academics, practitioners, and art workers—will share their experiences and explore historical practices across various facets and geographies of the art world. They will address contemporary issues facing art workers today and their historical precedents before opening the discussion to the audience. Participants include Jheni Arboine, Katriona Beales, Matt Browning, Rose Brander, Martha Buskirk, Laura Harris, Dylan Miner, Annie Ochmanek, Friederike Sigler, Gregory Sholette, Nizan Shaked, and Kuba Szreder. Organised in collaboration with Dave Beech (Chelsea College of Arts) and Dani Child (University of Manchester) and supported by an AHRC Network Grant (Mapping Creative Labour in Contemporary Art).
