During this series of three workshops we will experiment with timed automatic writing in response to a question or prompt. We will drink tea and discuss what it takes to show up at the desk or wherever you write, and at the end of this workshop you can leave with additional structures to support your creative work. The thing is, inspiration is ecstatic, sure, and craft is honed through experience, yes, but in addition to those talents, Octavia E. Butler also had a plan, Ursula Le Guin also had a daily routine. How do we reconcile the rote work of being available to write with our urgent work of dismantling one of England's violent inventions: standardised time? And while writing is not only a cognitive exercise, it does, at a very basic level, entail the firing of electricity from our guts to our brains and then on to other parts of us via the nervous system. First stop after the brain is the heart, by the way. So, the question is, how can we create more heart for our writing by what we feed the gut? We will be feeding the gut during the workshop because food, or minerals, or our parting gift from the earth, is what carries information to every cell in our bodies, or our DNA, or our gift from our people that came before us in time. Automatic writing is a way of translating that information that the minerals carry. * Snacks and drinks will be provided during the workshop. Nice Flaps invites Home Cinema to bring a new moving image perspective to our series of collective drawing sessions. This session will center on collectively exploring the intersection of the cinematic, drawing, and personal memories, led by artist Andoni Zamora. “The settings in my dreams often come from places where I lived as a child. I rarely dream about the environments I currently interact with. When I return to my hometown and encounter familiar landmarks like the fountain, the doorway, and the wardrobe, a part of me is transported back to those dreamlike states or memories.” Andoni Zamora invites participants to bring pieces of their memories to create a collective landscape. The session will focus on representing and translating these images through drawing. This workshop layers an improvised fictional narrative onto a collectively imagined scenery, blending memory with collaborative fiction storytelling. Participants will be invited to draw objects or architectural elements from their memories or dreams, while Andoni will contribute scenographic elements. This will unfold through a series of quick drawing exercises that will then be translated into larger illustrations. In the final part of the workshop, we will collaboratively speculate and narrate a story that ties together all the contributions. 'Nuestro camino' stands for the musical flamenco path that flamenco dancer Miki María Vos and flamenco guitarist Vicente José Santiago have been walking together since 2015. This path leads along various flamenco styles such as Bulerías, Tangos, and Guajiras. The starting point is Amsterdam, as Miki and Vicente first performed their first composition for dance and guitar there. The path then leads via the Zambra and the Tangos to Granada, via the Taranto to the coast of Murcia, and then on to Barcelona and the Spanish Pyrenees. 'Nuestro camino uniquely shows the development and interplay' between flamenco guitar and dance. While she studied with all the major flamenco names in the Netherlands, Seville, and Granada, she studied law. In recent years she has taught and performed in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Germany, and Greece. In 2022 she performed as a guest artist in the Concertgebouw and in 2023 and 2024 she danced in the official program of the Festival de Jerez under the direction of renowned choreographer Javier Latorre. Vicente José Santiago was born into a Spanish gypsy family in Murcia in 1990 and learned the rhythms and codes of flamenco during family gatherings. He started playing guitar at the age of 11 and, studied at the conservatories of Cartagena, Córdoba and Rotterdam. His teachers included PacoPeña and Manolo Sanlúcar. Vicente performs as a soloist, as an accompanist for singers and dancers,, and, is currently recording his first solo album with his own compositions. He also composed music has such as Javier Latorre and companies such as the Ballet Flamenco Lo Ferro. We start the new season with an exploration of creativity that bridges the analogue and digital. Visual artist Daniel Wesseik invites us into his world of playful narratives and experimental typography, shaped by a fascination with imaginary languages. From his creative process to his transformative residency in Japan, this talk offers insights into how tools like the typewriter inspire innovation across animation, illustration, and beyond. — Daniel Wesseik (b. 1985) is an Amsterdam based visual artist and educator, working primarily with animation, illustration, and typography. His body of work encompasses short films, animated loops, and drawings that are characterised by playful and poetic narratives and an experimental approach. His works were presented in numerous film festivals and exhibitions in the Netherlands and around the world. Wesseik’s creative practice merges analogue and digital tools, with a typewriter playing a significant role in his work. In 2024, as a guest of the Hiroshima Animation Festival Residency, he began integrating a Japanese typewriter into his creative process, which continues to influence his practice today. — In his talk, Wesseik will delve into his use of a typewriter and playful approach to typography, which is intertwined with his fascination for imaginary languages (glossolalia). This course is dedicated to unlocking the body, voice, and creative capacity, enhancing participants' presentation skills, and uncovering their creative potential. Throughout the course, participants will learn about voice production, interaction with partners, and explore impulses, senses of touch, and stage presence. Moreover, participants will be proposed character creation and storytelling techniques. The techniques that will be used: are performance and acting practices (drama and physical theatre), including Grotowski, Barba methods, Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Chekhov, and Terzopoulos, integrating with the curator's extensive on-stage and teaching experience. On 6 December, we want to look back at the Ornamenta 2024, regional cultural programme in Germany’s Northern Black Forest, and celebrate the launch of Tubelight's new magazine issue, including an extensive article on Ornamenta. During the event, we zoom out of the cultural programme in the Northern Black Forest and reflect on international cultural collaborations and programming taking place in provincial areas. We discuss the impact of international programming on local populations and how local cultural scenes enrich international art biennales. We talk about what aftercare could look like when setting up collaborations with local partners in provincial areas in other countries. Lastly, we want to find out how to maintain sustainable partnerships and ensure long-term impact. The speakers will be Yvonne Dröge Wendel, acclaimed artist and, since 2009, head of the Fine Arts deparment at the Gerrit Rietveld Acadmie in Amsterdam and curator, exhibition maker and film- and performance director Jules van den Langenberg. He was part of the curatorial team of the Ornamenta 2024. The event will be moderated by creative advisor at DutchCulture Astrid Mörk. The recipient of this year’s ABN AMRO Art Award is the artist Selma Selman (1991). As part of the award, Selman created an exhibition titled Sleeping Guards, on view starting January 30, 2025, at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The exhibition will showcase work in a variety of media — including performance, drawing, installation, and film — with which Selman compellingly and poetically addresses the position of women while questioning the manner in which society assigns value to labor and materials.
