This longest-running exhibition of African American art has been displayed annually at Griffin MSI since 1970. Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition features paintings, drawings, fine art prints, sculpture, mixed-media, ceramics and photography by African Americans, including youth artists between the ages of 14 and 17.

The 1940s and 1950s were a pivotal time for Japan’s creative print movement, known as sōsaku hanga. Just after World War II, artists who had primarily trained in oil painting turned to woodblock prints to portray the people around them, using the medium’s power and immediacy to capture a disappearing traditional world. This exhibition features the work of four sōsaku hanga artists: Onchi Kōshirō (1891–1955) and his followers Sekino Jun’ichirō (1914–1988), Saitō Kiyoshi (1907–1997), and Kitaoka Fumio (1918–2007). Onchi was the movement’s main advocate, and his name is synonymous with the group. From 1939, sōsaku hanga artists met at his home on the first Thursday of every month, where they received the encouragement they needed to flourish.

This year’s Spring Flower Show, “Rooted in Mystery” explores the critical parts of plants that we don’t usually see – the roots! In addition to finding and delivering water and nutrition to the leaves and stems, roots perform many lesser known but important functions in the lives of plants. For instance, plants “talk” to each other via chemical and electrical signals emitted by their roots to aid in survival. Visitors will learn about the different types of roots and the cool stuff they do while enjoying a marvelous display of spring plants, including azaleas, pansies, snapdragons, astilbe, baptisia, hydrangeas, and 26 different varieties of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

The first exhibition ever to focus on the multiple connections between drawing and printmaking, this presentation brings together around 90 works on paper by some of the greatest artists in the Western tradition to uncover the inner workings of their creative process and offer new ways to think about the links between the two mediums. Featuring fascinating drawings and exceptional prints from the late 15th century though the mid-19th century by artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Parmigianino, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Maria Sibylla Merian, Francisco Goya, and William Blake, the exhibition explores the creative exchange between the two practices by showcasing preparatory drawings for prints, printed imitations of drawings, and drawn copies of prints. A selection of hybrid works also questions traditional definitions, strict boundaries, and outdated hierarchical distinctions between media.

Are you stronger than a rugby player? Come find out! Chicago Women's Rugby Club is the oldest women's rugby team in Chicago, founded in 1976. They are a Division I Rugby Club playing within the CARFU and Midwest RFU. They take rugby, inclusivity, and fun seriously. Test your strength, grit, and determination in an arm wrestling competition by, for, and against rugby players. Whether you're a seasoned rugger looking to prove your dominance off the field, a strength enthusiast ready to dominate us all, or a fan that just likes to watch, this event is for you! Win bragging rights, rugby merch, and more! Tickets are $15 in advance for interested arm wrestling participants ($20 at the door) and $10 for general admission audience members ($15 at the door). Proceeds go toward CWRC's upcoming season! Doors at 6pm with a one hour happy hour before the arm wrestling tournament begins at 7pm. Dorothy remains open after the tournament until last call at 11pm. Dorothy is 21+ and requires physical ID for all to enter.
