The Player's name will be on a registered list, and at Combine check in, each player will be given a bib #, so college coaches can easily match player and contact information! Volleyball players will be divided by positions and identified per graduation year to allow attending college coaches to efficiently evaluate them. Multiple courts will be used at McCormick Place, with each court having a court coach , to allow players to showcase their skills sets to the college coaches. The court coaches will put the players through volleyball drills within their specific positions, along with combining positions to illustrate group skill sets. There will be a Combine Update and Recruiting Education Session for Parents by a former 20 year NCAA Division I Women's Head Volleyball Coach, while the players are engaged in the Combine! Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwals are masters of Qawwali Sufi music. They represent the twenty-sixth generation of original thirteenth-century Qawwals, connected to Hazrat Amir Khusrow, a poet, philosopher and musician, who invented the art of Qawwali. Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad Qawwal are direct descendants of Miyan Saamat Bin Ibrahim and received rigorous training in classical music and qawwali from their father, Ustad Munshi Raziuddin, who was also a legendary qawwal. Fareed Ayaz now leads the group, along with his younger brother Abu Muhammad. Their trained sons join them, making up the rest of the musical core of the ensemble. Their performances are known for their intense passion, profound spiritual depth, and the intricate interplay of vocals and rhythm. Weaving together devotional and secular traditions, the group also performs semi-classical forms including tarana, thumri, and khayal. Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwals have been bringing South Asian Qawwali to international audiences for over 40 years. Their music has been featured in the 2012 film The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and in 2017 they were the focus of a special BBC Proms concert. The group has performed many times in Pakistan’s Coke Studio. Their performances of “Kangna” in season 4 and “Piya Ghar Aaya” in season 11 have received record viewing worldwide. The exhibition will be on view until June 5, 2025. Established in 2004, Newcity's annual Breakout Artists issue has become a leading indicator of future success in contemporary art. Of the 150+ Breakout Artists before this year, over 40 now have gallery representation, ranging from Hauser & Wirth to numerous Chicago galleries; most of the others, including those who've chosen less commercial paths, show regularly at museums and institutions around the world. Join us for a conversation with Shannon Downey, aka Badass Cross Stitch, author of Let’s Move the Needle, and Megy Karydes, author of 50 Ways to More Calm, Less Stress, to discuss how art can be a powerful practice for healing, advocacy, activism, mental health and wellness. Following the hour-long conversation will be an opportunity to get crafty with a hands-on embroidery activity. Materials will be provided. No experience necessary. Books will also be available for sale. Shannon Downey, aka Badass Cross Stitch, is an artist, activist, craftivist, community builder, and general instigator. She moves people from passive consumers of art into engaged creators. Shannon leverages craft-based art forms to bring people together and offers them opportunities to transition from makers to change makers. Her work is about telling the truth and confronting harsh realities while simultaneously inspiring radical hope and a vision for what is possible. Megy Karydes is a Chicago-based writer, author, book coach, and communications professional. She helps mission-driven leaders and organizations tell stories that matter. She’s written for outlets including the New York Times, Architectural Digest, USA Today, National Geographic, and more, and works with non-profit organizations as a marketing and communications consultant.
