Nordic Resonance | The Old Hairdresser's
Jun 22, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Nordic Resonance is a duo performance by Renzo Spiteri (percussion, electronics, field recordings) and Richard Craig (flutes, electronics), shaped by the raw beauty of Shetland, where land, sea, and sky meet in constant motion. Drawing its breath from the edge of the Nordic sphere, the work invites deep listening and intuitive response, unfolding through free improvisation and layered interplay. The island's diverse soundscapes—wind-carved coastlines, shifting weather, birdsong, silence—form both source material and inspiration, resonating through acoustic and electronic textures. Instruments, found sounds, and live processing blur the lines between the human and the elemental. Nordic Resonance is not only a musical performance, but a conversation: between environment and artist, between sound and sensation, between what is heard and what lies just beneath. Each performance is immersive and attuned to the moment— a quiet invocation of place through sound, presence, and listening. Renzo Spiteri is a versatile multi-percussionist, sound artist, composer, sound recordist and interdisciplinary arts collaborator with over three decades of international experience. Originally from the Mediterranean island of Malta and now based in Shetland (Scotland), Renzo is known for his innovative approach to music and sound design, blending traditional, experimental, and contemporary techniques and incorporating environmental elements from the natural world into his compositions. Renzo's dynamic performances combine diverse instruments, field recordings, and everyday objects, spanning genres from spoken word, world music and jazz, to classical and experimental performances. Renzo collaborates widely across disciplines, working with musicians, storytellers, dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers, including National Geographic's award winning and BAFTA nominated film, Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story. He has performed on prestigious stages and festivals in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including Royal Festival Hall (London), United Nations Headquarters (Geneva), Jerwood Hall LSO St. Luke's (London), Sonic Arts Research Centre (Belfast), Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC), SOTA (Singapore), National Concert Hall (Dublin), Babylon Club (Istanbul), Ludwig Forum (Aachen), TAK theatre (Berlin), Nordic Music Days (Faroe), WOMAD, Festival of the Desert, Future Everything Festival, Sonorities, Musica Viva, PASIC, amongst others. www.renzospiteri.com Described as a primal, at times ecstatic state of Fauvist force... (Gramophone Magazine), Richard Craig has developed a distinctive approach to the flute, collaborating with composers to develop new works for the instrument and developing his own compositions. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Richard Blake and in France with Mario Caroli he has played across Europe in the US and Latin America. Richard has performed with groups such as Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, ELISION and Scandinavian groups CAPUT, Kammarensemblen, and with the UK ensembles Ensemble Octandre, Explore Ensemble and Apartment House. As well as a performer, Richard is an improviser and composer and has worked alongside Barry Guy, Angharad Davies, Rhodri Davies and a founder member of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra. Richard is currently co-principal flute of the Riot Ensemble. Upcoming projects include a release of Telemann Fantasias/Improvisations on the Ulysses Arts Label, and further collaborations with soprano Stephanie Lamprea, PNEUMA with organist Michael Bonaventure and Nordic Resonance with Renzo Spiteri. Richard is also a lecturer in performance and the Director of Performance at the University of Edinburgh.
