Margaret Macdonald and Charles Rennie Mackintosh: partners in Life and Art? | Hunterian Art Gallery

Jun 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Arts
Fine Art
“In all my architectural efforts you have been half if not threequarters in them …” – so wrote Charles Rennie Mackintosh to his wife, Margaret Macdonald, the year before he died. But what can we really know about the nature and extent of the couple’s creative partnership? Some early critics saw Macdonald as a damaging influence, tainting Mackintosh’s ‘modernism’ with her sinuous Art Nouveau decoration. More recently, she has been claimed as an equal but unacknowledged partner in her husband’s work, a woman unjustly sidelined by the male-dominated art establishment. Forming an objective view of Macdonald’s and Mackintosh’s respective roles is difficult, hampered by a lack of contemporary documentation. In this talk, Joseph Sharples, Curator of Mackintosh Collections at the Hunterian, will consider the extent of their collaboration and the character of their artistic partnership, drawing on a range of evidence from their own lifetimes. This event is available to attend in person at the Hunterian Art Gallery or online via live stream. This project is to host dinners in 200 cities to combat loneliness while supporting locally owned businesses. Each month, dinner is held at a different restaurant. These dinners are not directly associated with the restaurants, but are simply based on a table reservation. This micro-event is intended to be for 4-6 people maximum. If the evening you signed up for does not hit the minimum number of signups, please be open to joining us on another night with a fuller group. Check out our feature in Eventbrite's 2025 TRNDS report about embracing the micro-event trend. Watch our feature in a news segment on Nashville's Fox 17! How does it work? Image Description; A lively scene unfolds with four performers standing in a dimly lit space, exuding vibrant energy and flamboyance. On the far left, a male performer dons a dazzling outfit adorned with multicoloured sequins, his shorts shimmering attractively in the light. His top is a short-sleeved shirt that mirrors the same rainbow hues, evoking a sense of celebration. He sports a wide-brimmed hat with a silver band and stands with a joyful expression, arms crossed over his chest in a pose of camaraderie. Next to him, a female performer captures attention in a striking dress, designed with a multitude of colourful patterns that cascade elegantly to her mid-thigh. The fabric appears to catch the light, enhancing the vivacity of her attire, while her hair flows in soft waves around her shoulders. She wears a bright smile, embodying the spirit of the moment, her hands also crossed over her heart in unity with the others. The third performer, a striking figure with platinum blonde hair, stands between the first and the last person. She wears a long gown that features a stunning spectrum of rainbow colours, flowing down to the ground in a way that accentuates her figure. Silver jewellery adorns her neck, adding a touch of glamour, while her engagement in the performance is palpable, her hands positioned similarly to those of her companions. To the right, a performer stands confidently in a vibrant red outfit, which includes a fitted jacket with golden embellishments and matching red trousers, finished off with a classic red tie. They sport dark sunglasses and a well-groomed moustache that completes their distinguished appearance. Their pose echoes the others, suggesting a synchronised group dynamic. Behind them, the backdrop consists of weathered walls that provide a textured contrast to the performers’ bright ensembles. Two proudly displayed PRIDE flags, fluttering against the corrugated metal of a shutter. Another decorative piece above them, resembling a circular fan, echoes the flag’s colours, creating a thematic connection throughout the scene. Information Source: Debay De Lux | eventbrite

America today is facing a long-running crisis of fact. AI technologies like ChatGPT have problems with “hallucinations” – the unwanted production of errors – but AI is not the first technology to amplify public disagreements, misunderstandings and manipulations of historical fact for political gain. Modern AI hallucinations are only one portion of a long-running crisis of fact and technology in modern culture. In this talk, Professor Guldi will describe several concrete strategies that information scientists and social scientists can take to protect democracy today. Join us in Glasgow to hear fresh ideas from engineers on making Glasgow a smart and sustainable city! It is free and the venue is accessible. The series aims to facilitate networking, foster idea sharing, and promote innovation and entrepreneurship by holding informal events where students and early career engineers can showcase themselves as innovative thought leaders and various sectors can come together to share expertise.
