Lauren J. A. Bear presents 'Mother of Rome' | Third Place Books Seward Park
Jan 13, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
A powerful and fierce reimagining of the earliest Roman legend: the twins, Romulus and Remus, mythical founders of history’s greatest empire, and the woman whose sacrifice made it all possible.Third Place Books is pleased to welcome Lauren J. A. Bear—author of Medusa's Sisters—for a discussion of her new book, Mother of Rome. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Mother of Rome. . .The names Romulus and Remus may be immortalized in map and stone and chronicle, but their mother exists only as a preface to her sons’ journey, the princess turned oath-breaking priestess, condemned to death alongside her children.
But she did not die; she survived. And so does her story.
Beautiful, royal, rich: Rhea has it all—until her father loses his kingdom in a treacherous coup, and she is sent to the order of the Vestal Virgins to ensure she will never produce an heir.
Except when mortals scheme, gods laugh.
Rhea becomes pregnant, and human society turns against her. Abandoned, ostracized, and facing the gravest punishment, Rhea forges a dangerous deal with the divine, one that will forever change the trajectory of her life…and her beloved land.
To save her sons and reclaim their birthright, Rhea must summon nature’s mightiest force – a mother’s love – and fight.
All roads may lead to Rome, but they began with Rhea Silvia. Lauren J. A. Bearwas born in Boston and raised in Long Beach. After studying English at UCLA and education at LMU, she taught middle-school humanities for over a decade—and survived! She is a teaching fellow for the Holocaust Center for Humanity and lives in Seattle with her husband and three young children. She likes crossword puzzles and being on or near the water without getting wet. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Inspired and Outraged. . .A remarkable autobiography—written entirely in free verse—of Alice Rothchild's journey from 1950's good girl to irreverent, feisty, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the contradictory, sexist world of medicine. As a child who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, she was compelled to create a path in the often outrageous, male-dominated medical field, repeatedly finding herself to be a first: accepted into an ob-gyn residency, opening an all-woman practice, working with midwives, challenging the status quo, shaped by her early involvement with Our Bodies Ourselves. Rothchild's poems are steeped in the often-shocking history of medicine and the conflicted sexual politics of the second half of the twentieth century. Alice Rothchild is a physician, author, and filmmaker who loves storytelling that pushes boundaries and engages in unexpected conversations. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1970 and Boston University School of Medicine in 1974. She practiced obstetrics and gynecology for almost 40 years and served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Harvard Medical School. She writes and lectures widely, authored three books on health and human rights in Israel/Palestine, two novels for children, contributed to a number of anthologies and poetry journals, and directed a documentary, Voices Across the Divide. She received Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston’s Women Doctors Award, was named in Feminists Who Changed America 1963–1975, had her portrait painted for Robert Shetterly’s Americans Who Tell the Truth project, and was named a Peace Pioneer by the American Jewish Peace Archive. Gabriela's favorite: Students have mentioned that while out social dancing, partners have commented on how nice their embrace FEELS. The easiest, and yet most compelling dance class I've ever been to in my life. — Nancy, 2017 It's out of the head, and into more of a movement or a flow. — Nathan, 2015 “I appreciate your ability to connect dancers both on and off the dance floor. You create an environment that is relaxed and inviting I’ve easily connected with others at your classes... Thank you for facilitating connection on all levels!” — Traci, 2013 FAQs What should I wear? Comfortable clothing or dress it up. The important thing is shoes: wear shoes that allow you to pivot/spin (i.e., do not grip the floor), that are secure on your feet (i.e., no flip-flops), and that you can walk comfortably in. If in doubt, feel free to bring an extra pair with you. You can also turn almost any comfortable shoe into a dance shoe by placing an old sock over the front half of the shoe. This should allow you to pivot easily. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No need to print your ticket; once you register you'll be on the list! What's the refund policy? No refunds. However, the class slot is transferrable to someone who will dance the same role (follow or lead) as the original registration. About Wealth Is a Mindset. . .Shang Saavedra is the Founder and CEO of Save My Cents, a personal-finance education and coaching platform that focuses on the intersection of mental health and financial wealth. Her ethos is that changing one’s finances isn’t merely about making or saving more money. In her mind, personal finance is personal and thus related to one's upbringing, past experiences, family history, and more. It requires bravely facing the traumas and fears of one's past and tracing how they lead to mindsets grounded in scarcity and insecurity, especially as they relate to the handling of money. Drawing upon scientific research on psychology and neuroscience, as well as many mental health experts, Saavedra has developed a methodology called “Trigger, Action, Reward,” which identifies the root causes of unhealthy money behaviors, provides concrete suggestions on how to break those cycles, and guides readers toward an abundance mindset that leads to financial success and security. Through her online classes and coaching lessons in investing, saving for retirement, debt freedom, and more, she has helped thousands of clients implement the TAR strategy and achieve transformative change in their lives. Wealth Is a Mindset provides practical, concrete applications of Saavedra’s mindset-changing methodology. It is also an empathetic memoir that shows how Saavedra and her husband overcame many of their own emotional challenges to attain financial freedom. Dozens of anecdotes from her clients illustrate how the strategy works in real life. More importantly, it shows that we all are human, our inherent worth going far beyond simply a salary and net worth number. Featuring prescriptive, judgment-free exercises and worksheets to show step by step how to pay down debt, raise income, start a side hustle, save more money, invest for retirement, and build generational wealth, Wealth Is a Mindset will help readers find ways to improve their money and their lives, no matter where they are in their personal money story. Mutant Optics: A Conversation | Henry Art Gallery Auditorium
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Join artist Lucy Kim for a conversation inspired by her exhibition Mutant Optics with law and bioethics scholar Osagie K. Obasogie and dermatology resident physician Linda Oyesiku, moderated by interdisciplinary scholar Temi Odumosu. Sitting at the intersection of visual culture, histories of science, and medical practice, this conversation will offer an interdisciplinary perspective on the social and cultural construction of race and perception. The point of departure for the conversation are Kim’s large-scale prints made from melanin, the same black and brown pigment that plays a key role in the color of human skin, hair, and eyes. The conversation engages Kim’s use of melanin as a framework to untangle the ways human appearance is subject to mutation in the social imagination, including the false myth of racial hierarchies. The speakers will weave together visual artifacts, storytelling, and scholarship in a dynamic conversation that interrogates the social forces that shape knowledge production and illusions of neutrality. About the Speakers Lucy Kim is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received the 2022 Creative Capital Award for her project printing images with bacteria that has been genetically modified to produce melanin. Kim is also a recipient of the 2023 Brother Thomas Fellowship, 2019 Mass Cultural Council Grant, 2017 ICA Boston James and Audrey Foster Prize, 2014 Artadia Award, MacDowell Fellowship, Hermitage Fellowship, and Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship. From 2018 to 2021, she was an artist-in-residence at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Kim has exhibited her work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the Broad Institute, Cambridge, MA; Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, New York, NY; deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; Tufts University Art Gallery, Medford, MA; Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore, Saratoga Springs, NY; Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn, NY; among others. She teaches at Boston University, where she works with her scientist colleagues to further develop her experimental technique printing with melanin. Osagie K. Obasogie is the Haas Distinguished Chair and Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law with a joint appointment in the Joint Medical Program and School of Public Health. He is the author of Blinded By Sight: Seeing Race Through the Eyes of the Blind (Stanford University Press, 2013), which was awarded the Herbert Jacob Book Prize by the Law & Society Association. He has written essays for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic, and placed scholarly articles with the Harvard Law Review (forthcoming), University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Cornell Law Review, and Virginia Law Review, among others. Obasogie is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. His current work examines the role of science, medicine, and medical professionals in hindering the ability to hold police officers accountable when they use excessive force; analyzes the legacy of the American eugenics movement and its contemporary impact on law, science, medicine, and technology; studies how legal doctrine produces police violence; and exposes the often overlooked limitations of DNA databases when they are used in criminal investigations. Linda Oyesiku is a senior dermatology resident physician at the University of Washington. She earned a BA in Anthropology and Global Health from Emory University and MPH from Boston University. She was a Peace Corps Master’s International graduate student and served for two years in Mozambique. She spent a decade working in the Nordic countries interrogating the visual politics and legacies of colonialism and developing reparative memorialization practices in collaboration with contemporary artists, designers, and curators. Examples of this work include the participatory sound installation What Lies Unspoken: Sounding the colonial archive (2017) at the Royal Danish Library and Statens Museum for Kunst; and the exhibition Threshold(s) (2019) at the Center for Art on Migration Politics in Copenhagen.
