Artist Talk | Bong Jun Kim. Remembering Democracy Through Art | Gallery B612, 1st Avenue South, Seattle, WA, USA
Jan 9, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Join Gallery B612 on January 9th for an artist talk with Bong Jun Kim Related to his Retrospective Exhibition. This exhibition is not just a display of artwork, but a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Korean people in the pursuit of democracy. The timing of this exhibition is particularly significant, as South Korea currently faces global attention due to the recent emergency declaration of martial law and concerns over a potential departure from the democratic stability of the past four decades.
Bong-Jun's art, a cornerstone of the 1980's Democracy movement serves as a timely juxtaposition against the backdrop of current events. His work, serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made to protect democracy, offering lessons for the present and the future. Kim Bong-Jun’s first U.S. solo exhibition is not just a showcase of his art but a reminder of the cost of democracy and the courage it requires to defend it. At a time when democracy is under threat globally, this exhibition highlights the importance of remembering the past and protecting the ideals of justice and freedom for the future. About the Exhibition: Bong Jun Kim: RetrospectiveDecember 19, 2024 - January 10, 2025 (11am-6pm Tuesday-Friday) Bong Jun Kim graduated from Hongik University in 1979 with a degree in sculpture amidst Korea’s political upheaval. His art emerged as a voice against state violence, expressing solidarity with farmers and labor unions while championing peace, human rights, and democracy. After the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, where he became a wanted dissident, Kim’s experiences fueled his dedication to art that speaks for the people. Exploring visual expressions rooted in “Asian brush” techniques and the vibrancy of folk culture, Kim revived Joseon-era aesthetics through Buddhist and folk-inspired artworks, blending tradition with modern narratives. His notable work, The Spring Fight, exhibited at the Queens Museum in New York, showcases his commitment to democratic ideals and peace. Now, with a vision of showcasing K-art internationally, Bong Jun Kim aims to bring his blend of Korean cultural depth and global modernist influence to the U.S. through diverse media, embodying a unique East-West artistic fusion.
