His first book, The House of Morgan , won the National Book Award, Washington: A Life won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, and Alexander Hamilton —the inspiration for the Broadway musical—won the George Washington Book Prize. He has twice been a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and is one of only three living biographers to have won the Gold Medal for Biography of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A past president of PEN America, Chernow has been the recipient of nine honorary doctorates. About Mark Twain: Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Ron Chernow illuminates the full, fascinating, and complex life of the writer long celebrated as the father of American literature, Mark Twain Before he was Mark Twain, he was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Born in 1835, the man who would become America’s first, and most influential, literary celebrity spent his childhood dreaming of piloting steamboats on the Mississippi. But when the Civil War interrupted his career on the river, the young Twain went west to the Nevada Territory and accepted a job at a local newspaper, writing dispatches that attracted attention for their brashness and humor. It wasn’t long before the former steamboat pilot from Missouri was recognized across the country for his literary brilliance, writing under a pen name that he would immortalize. In this richly nuanced portrait of Mark Twain, acclaimed biographer Ron Chernow brings his considerable powers to bear on a man who shamelessly sought fame and fortune, and crafted his persona with meticulous care. After establishing himself as a journalist, satirist, and lecturer, he eventually settled in Hartford with his wife and three daughters, where he went on to write The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn . He threw himself into the hurly-burly of American culture, and emerged as the nation’s most notable political pundit. At the same time, his madcap business ventures eventually bankrupted him; to economize, Twain and his family spent nine eventful years in exile in Europe. He suffered the death of his wife and two daughters, and the last stage of his life was marked by heartache, political crusades, and eccentric behavior that sometimes obscured darker forces at play. Drawing on Twain’s bountiful archives, including thousands of letters and hundreds of unpublished manuscripts, Chernow masterfully captures the man whose career reflected the country’s westward expansion, industrialization, and foreign wars, and who was the most important white author of his generation to grapple so fully with the legacy of slavery. Today, more than one hundred years after his death, Twain’s writing continues to be read, debated, and quoted. In this brilliant work of scholarship, a moving tribute to the writer’s talent and humanity, Chernow reveals the magnificent and often maddening life of one of the most original characters in American history. The People’s Way by Ashley Tyner and William Tyner (USA, 2025, 75 minutes) At the intersection of East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, three community organizers—Jeanelle Austin, Toshira Garraway, and Robin Wonsley— embark on various and interweaving journeys after George Floyd’s murder to care for their communities, find inner healing, and forge a path towards Black liberation. Each one does this in their own way, whether demanding accountability for the murder of a community member by police, building a community-centered approach to public safety, or commemorating and preserving a public space for recovery from police violence. Ashley Tyner is a writer, filmmaker, and Special Projects Editor at i-D Magazine, where she works to create space to amplify marginalized voices in the worlds of art and culture. She writes and produces across print, audio, and video formats, with a focus on designing editorial experiences that translate into community events and service-driven initiatives. William Tyner is an anthropologist, filmmaker, and UX Researcher at Google. William is also the recipient of the 2018-2019 Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship, where he studied the intersection of civil society and technology in post-communist Romania. HAFfy Hour: Separating Science From Superstition | Hard Rock Cafe Philadelphia

May 3, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Philadelphia
Cultural Experiences
Superstitious and sometimes questionable age-old practices usually stem from reason or rationale that made sense…at one point in time.  If you’ve grown up in a Hindu household, you’ve experienced your share of them. From not cutting your nails at night to not showering immediately after a meal to always adding an extra $1 to a monetary gift or donation, we have no shortage of do’s and don’ts.  Naturally, they beg the question: BUT WHY??? We’re here to tell you! Join HAF’s Director of Education, Vijay Satnarine, and Executive Director, Suhag Shukla, Esq., as they discuss the origins of various superstitions and, more importantly, interesting Hindu practices, traditions, and customs that were destroyed by colonialism and written out of textbooks. Get to know your roots as we delve into a fascinating discussion of what has been lost along the way and how HAF is working to bring it back. As our elders always say, “If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going.” (You knew that was coming, right?) And since every family has its own unique age-old practices, share some of yours that still leave you wondering WHY? We’ll do our best to answer as many as we can during our discussion.
