Déjà vu Hayden Dance Annual School Show | Roedean School
May 4, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
Hayden Dance is a small, locally based dance school run by Julie Hayden. We held our very first school show 10 years ago at St Nicolas Church Hall in Saltdean. I am extremely proud to say that some of the students who performed in our first show “Magic Moments” will be performing in this year’s show Déjà vu. In 2016 we held our first show at Roedean Theatre and have been lucky enough to return annually (Although we did have a couple of years with no school show due to covid and the Theatres refurbishment) But we were the first to use the theatre after its renovation. This year our show features numbers from our very first to our most recent. Most of our students only attend once a week and work really hard during their classes. I would love nothing more as their teacher for them to walk out to a full theatre and watch their faces as they receive take their bows to applause.

One Year of Kanukai party at The Green Door Store | Green Door Store
May 6, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
After my last 2 events sold out, it's only right that we go bigger & better for this special occasion! It's been a crazy year; from featuring in The Sunday Times Culture Magazine, a sold out mini tour and countless of iconic shows over SE England; it's only right I bring my fusion of Grungy Psych Soul back to Brighton, where it all started.
Headlined by myself, I've cherry picked a lineup of some of the finest musicians I've come across so far:
Spill - Alternative Rock band from Brighton, blending the raw intensity of grunge with timeless elements of classic and psychedelic rock. Spill has quickly made a name for themselves in Brighton & beyond during their first UK tour that saw them play 10 dates across the country from headline shows in Leeds to supporting Thistle in Exeter.
Ross Stewart - Scottish-born singer/songwriter and musician based in Norwich, UK. His sound comes as a fusion of deep-rooted blues influence, modern americana, folk and rock, presented with a contemporary edge and feel-good flair.
Sunlifter - Grunge/alt rock trio based in Brighton, taking inspiration from bands such as Soundgarden, Basement and Smashing Pumpkins. Their sound ranges from aggressive, hardcore style riffs to melodic and intricate chord progressions.
Come down, make some friends and enjoy a night of beautiful music. I can't wait to see you all :)

SO VERY SMALL: How Humans Discovered The Microcosmos | The Grand Central, Brighton
May 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
In 1665
, an infectious disease swept through London and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people. It would take another two hundred years for the cause of the
Great Plague of London
to be confirmed: a powerful bacterium called
Yersinia pestis
. In those centuries, our understanding of diseases was transformed.
The turning point came in the 19th century with the development of germ theory and scientists made major breakthroughs in our ongoing struggle against infectious disease. Perhaps the greatest of these achievements is the discovery of antibiotic treatment, which has been the salvation of much of humanity in recent centuries.
In a story that spans centuries and continents,
Thomas Levenson
reveals how human hubris led us to overestimate our own ability and underestimate the threat that microorganisms truly pose. Join us on a journey through some of the most significant epidemics and pandemics in history, including the recurrent outbreaks of cholera in Europe and Asia, and the 1721 Boston smallpox epidemic.
Thomas
will also be signing copies of his latest book,
‘So Very Small’
, which will be available to purchase on the night.

is a professor of science writing at the

Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
May 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

FORAGE & NIBBLE in Brighton (East Sussex) | Wild Park
May 10, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
This course is designed to get you as involved as possible - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day. There will also be samples of wild food and drink for everyone to get stuck into and a pre-made wild snack!
The focus with all of our workshops is on the 4 'F's of Foraging:
Fungi, Fruit, Flowers and Foliage
. We aim for an array of these elements on every session we run (weather and season permitting!)
Event sold out or can't make this date? Head to
www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops
or view our
Eventbrite profile
to browse all available sessions.
What To Expect
Our 'Forage & Nibble' workshops are exactly that: you will spend the day learning how to forage with your tutor and then be treated to a 'wild snack' to put it all into context! These have become our most popular events and are available at numerous locations around the country.
DURATION: 3 hours
(approx 2.5 hours of foraging and 30 mins preparing and eating your wild snack)
We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop:
a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day
discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law
a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site.
Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths
a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager
a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours
small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild and a wild snack. Your wild snack might be something we find on the day freshly cooked in the woods, a hunk of homemade sourdough with some wild pickles and preserves, or even a big slice of cake (our tutors are decent cooks too so it could be something even better!) You can read more about what to expect with your wild snack by reading
this Field Note.
our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged
after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time.
Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session
.
At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of
our wild products
and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end.

Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket!

Brighton and Hove

May 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
Welcome to Off The Page, a warm and inviting space where words come to life and stories find their voice. Held at the award-winning Afrori Books, the evening is perfectly set against a backdrop of incredible works by renowned authors, creating an inspiring atmosphere for all.
Whether you're a budding writer or an experienced wordsmith, this is your opportunity to share something from your catalogue or perhaps a piece you’re still crafting.
Join us for an evening where we transport our audience to other worlds, each tale unfolding with beauty and imagination. There’s a unique joy in hearing stories aloud, as the words resonate through the room, creating a shared experience that connects us all. It’s a night of shared stories, where the power of writing takes centre stage, and every voice is celebrated.
Want to Perform?
Off The Page is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices — creating a space for stories, perspectives, and people that are too often overlooked. While our stage is open to everyone, we prioritise offering opportunities to marginalised writers.
As we often receive a high number of submissions, if we’re unable to offer you a slot this time, you’ll be given priority for our next event.
If you’re an author, poet, or writer interested in reading or performing, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch with us at

Please note, this event is for adults only—no under 18s allowed.
