Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna

May 31–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC)
Hove
Exhibitions
Karimi uses a range of methods, including monotypes, wood- and linocuts and gouache; combined, they create a lively dialogue between the artist and his work. Landscapes and views are often merely hinted at – humans are the true heart of Karimi’s work, appearing as portraits, in classic poses, as lying and seated nudes, alone and in groups. The room around them is diffuse, sometimes suggested by a doorway flooded with light, other times by another person appearing at the edge of the picture. Two people face one another, rigid as statues, separated by a light expanse of color, of water? His figures seem delicate and brittle, as does the scenery they move within. They all portray small episodes within a unique moment – like the worm crawling towards the apple – that disappear almost before we have fully grasped their significance.

Cultural Experiences
Chris Carter will be joining us in May to celebrate the paperback release of 'The Death Watcher', the 13th adrenaline-packed Robert Hunter thriller. Chris Carter is coming to Brighton Waterstones to chat about his mega- selling Robert Hunter series and celebrate the paperback release of the intensely dark and chilling 'The Death Watcher'. When a routine autopsy on what looked like a straightforward hit-and-run leads the LA Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Carolyn Hove, to discover some puzzling inconsistencies, she calls in Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD Ultra Violent Crimes Unit. Not only has Dr Hove discovered that the death wasn’t caused by a hit-and-run, but she has also found indications that the victim had been severely tortured prior to death. What no one realises is that what Dr Hove has stumbled upon is just the tip of the iceberg and it will lead Hunter and his partner, Carlos Garcia, on the trail of a twisted and clever killer who hides in plain sight. A serial killer no one even knew existed – a killer who has always operated under the radar, expertly disguising every gruesome murder as an accidental death. But how do you investigate a murder when you have no victims? How do you catch a killer who leaves behind no crime scene? How do you stop a ghost who no one can prove even exists? Book & ticket option includes a paperback copy of 'The Death Watcher' (rrp £9.99) available for collection on the night. This is for you if you’re looking for a welcoming space to write alongside other writers—no pressure, just time set aside for your words. We’ll be in The Hideaway room, a comfortable space with just enough background bustle to help us feel alive as we write! There’ll be unlimited teas and filter coffees on hand to keep you going, and if you fancy something stronger, you’re very welcome to pop to the bar and order a tipple. (Just no bringing in your own snacks or drinks—except water, that’s absolutely fine.) We’re not teaching or offering critique during this session—though if that’s your thing, you might want to check out our membership community - The Ironclad Cauldron. This retreat is simply about showing up for your writing, in good company, with a bit of structure to ease you in. Facilitated by our Co-founder (and writer in his own right), Andrew Allen, we’ll start with a quick hello and some intention setting before settling in. You’re free to work at your own pace and take breaks as you need—wander to the beach nearby, or just stretch your legs. At the end of the afternoon, we’ll come back together briefly to check in and give each other a quiet round of applause for showing up. Whether you’re working on a novel, script, PhD, memoir, CV or something that doesn’t even have a name yet, you’re very welcome. Come write with us. *** PLEASE NOTE! **** There are 7 steps supported by a handrail up into the Hideaway Room so this is not accessible for wheelchair users. We will plan to run more accessible retreats soon. Make sure your laptop & device is as charged as it can be and consider bringing a spare portable battery. There is wifi at the venue - sign up as a guest. If you have any queries or questions about the Writing Retreat - get in contact. DISCOUNT! We're offering 20% discount for members of the Ironclad Creative Cauldron. Members also get free access to our 10 Virtual Writers' Spaces every single week! : JOIN HERE: https://www.ironcladcreative.org/creative-cauldron Information Source: Ironclad Creative CIC | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
The 'Domenica' Breakfast Work isn’t just a job – it’s belonging, confidence, independence. Yet, in England, just 4.7% of people with learning disabilities are in paid work. In Brighton, Team Domenica are changing that, helping young people find and maintain meaningful employment. This June, we’re heading to Plus X Innovation for a special Pop-up Breakfast with guest speaker Rosa Monckton MBE , Founder of Team Domenica. Rosa’s career spans leadership roles at some of the world’s biggest luxury brands. She was CEO of Tiffany & Co for 14 years, establishing their UK presence, before moving to Asprey & Garrard and later founding Team Domenica in 2016. Her daughter, Domenica, has Down’s Syndrome. After leaving college, Rosa saw first-hand how few support opportunities there were for people with learning disabilities and autism. Team Domenica was born to fill that gap, believing that everyone deserves the chance to aspire to a career and the independence and confidence that comes with it. Today, Team Domenica runs cafés across Brighton & Hove; they partner with over 60 local businesses and have just announced a brand-new site at Pavilion Gardens. Through their Supported Internship Programme, 80% of their young people have attained paid work, showing what’s possible with the right support. Join us on 10 June at Plus X Innovation for a taste of Café Domenica – and to hear Rosa’s story, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Breakfast at Domenica’s. Pop-up Breakfasts , as their name suggests, take place at different venues all over the city, many of them special places in their own right. Creative Writing Masterclass: Life writing and imagination | Kemptown Bookshop

What role does the imagination play when we are writing about lived experience? If we agree that the life-writer’s task isn’t simply to record events but to write about them in a way that will engage our reader in character, setting and story, then we need to bring our imagination to the work. Evoking remembered people or conversations or happenings in a vivid way in our writing can feel conflicting for life-writers so during this masterclass (mistressclass!) we’ll discuss ethical considerations and through a combination of in-class writing exercises and the study of extracts from published texts, we’ll explore techniques to enable us to tell our stories creatively and with integrity. The session will be run by Hannah Vincent. Hannah is a novelist, short story writer and playwright. Her first novel, Alarm Girl was published in 2014 by Myriad Editions and her second, The Weaning was published in 2018 by Salt. Her short story collection She-Clown and Other Stories, published by Myriad in 2020, was shortlisted for the Edgehill Prize and the Manchester Fiction Prize. Her stage plays have been produced by among others, The Royal Court Theatre and The Royal National Theatre Studio and her radio play Come to Grief won a 2015 BBC Audio award. She has a PhD in creative and critical writing from the University of Sussex. The session will be held in the cosy surroundings of Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton and will run from 10-4pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is in the heart of Kemptown Village, on sveeral major bus routes and has plenty of options for lunch. A SÉANCE FOR THE SUMMER | The Rose Hill

It pleases the Séance mightily to be hosting semi/modular psychonauts Teleplasmiste , the exploratory cosmic electronics project helmed by Mark O Pilkington ( Luminous Foundation , Strange Attractor Press ) and Michael J York ( Coil , Cyclobe , The Utopia Strong ) since 2015. ' Teleplasmiste’s cleverly layered soundscapes are deep and immersive. They plunge the listener through a psychic wall into what seems like infinite space.' The Quietus photo Pete Woodhead https://bandcamp.com/search?q=teleplasmiste&item_type= https://thequietus.com/subscriber-area/music-downloads/teleplasmiste-spring-equinox-ep-of-nature-and-elecricity-interview/ Rose Io Feral lullabies for uncanny children. RIYL Dame Darcy, Ivor Cutler, Virginia Astely. https://roseio.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/_rose__io/ Kemper `Norton The preeminent sonic gazetteer of West Country phantasms and rave spectres graces the Séance for second summoning. The first was superb. 'A submerged breakbeat, a chug of acid rhythm or just a recurring shape in the Magic Eye blizzard.. A lovely fusion of Cornish and kosmische. ' The Wire https://kempernorton.bandcamp.com/ Map 71 Brighton's beloved incantatory post-industrial drum-magick duo. Cut-up text delrium and buzzsaw electronic threat. 'Lisa Jayne’s vocals have...bite, and malice, to them, while Pyne’s backing tracks are svelte muscular things. They ripple with clever ideas and taut instrumentation whilst having the power to get under your skin.' God Is In The TV https://map71.bandcamp.com/music photo Al Strachan Elkka Nyoukis & Karen Constance Motherdaughter pitchwonk & tapemangle improv hatched from the Chocolate Monk/Blood Stereo otherlode. Constance & Nyoukis utilise tapes and electronics to percolate a sound of uneasy wooze. Expect a bent out of shape surrealist take on the wonderful liminal world between wakefulness & sleep. Pillows are optional. 'Loops and manipulation go from crinkled, hissing ear wobble to more in-the-red what-the-f*ckery (à la Polly Shang Kuan Band).' Tedium House https://bloodstereo.bandcamp.com/album/bicker-sweet Near-weekly Séance channelings have occurred variously via the Repeater Radio, Slack City and Radio Reverb motherships for 15 years. Born from a series of all-day musical pub sessions in the mid noughties and named after the 1964 Bryan Forbes film Séance on a Wet Afternoon, each show is a digressive wallow in the astral hinterlands of esoteric pop, buried soundtrack treasure, new and old electronic grot, folk musics psych and trad, freeform misshapes, arcane dub effluvium, modern composition, covetable new releases and whatever else happens to be punching their ticket at the time. When operating as a production unit The Séance has contributed tracks to A Year In The Country alongside remix work for various valued compadres. It will do some more of all this at some point once it pulls its finger out. Pete Wiggs is otherwise available as one third of Saint Etienne and Dem (aka James Papademetrie) isn't. Proper Soul for the 21st Century - The Craig Charles House Party Show, BBC Radio 2 A great soul singer! - Tony Blackburn, BBC Radio London “Great songwriting and a beautiful voice” - Robert Elms - BBC Radio London “An artist on the rise... a considerable talent” - Blues & Soul Magazine Abi Farrell Live at The Folklore Rooms, Brighton Come and join soul vocalist and songwriter Abi Farrell and her acoustic band (Cy Atkinson; Keys, Alex Wiseman and Chloe Ravat; Backing Vocals) for her first ever headline show in Brighton at The Folklore Rooms. About Abi Farrell Abi Farrell was raised in rural Oxfordshire on a soundtrack of vocal powerhouses spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton and Carole King. Named 'an artist on the rise.. a considerable talent' by Blues and Soul Magazine, Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which is equally at home creating moving, introspective ballads as it is high-energy, empowering anthems. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background. Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of The Milk and pressed to limited edition 7 vinyl. Her releases have been championed by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, who praised Abi's writing 'proper soul for the 21st century'. 'Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and subsequently led to Abi performing the track on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. Though Abi has been captivating live audiences since her teenage years, she has recently opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has performed at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Pizza Express Live Holborn, The 100 Club, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Servant Jazz Quarters, Colours Hoxton, Oslo Hackney, and The Louisiana, Bristol. In addition to her own artistry, Abi has performed backing vocals for many of her peers: Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Carmy Love, The Milk, PM Warson, Denver Cuss and James Bone, and continues to lend her voice to music she loves. This show will mark Abi's first ever headline show in Brighton. It will celebrate the arrival of her brand new single '47 Days' and further new music due to arrive this summer.
