Join us at Four Seasons Books on Sunday, March 23, at 3 PM to celebrate the release of Allison Gunn’s chilling debut novel, Nowhere! Allison will be in conversation with acclaimed horror author Andrew Joseph White, author of Compound Fracture, for an afternoon of riveting discussion about storytelling, Appalachian folklore, and the dark side of small-town life. Copies of Nowhere and Compound Fracture will be available for purchase and signing in addition to refreshments! Nowhere is a spellbinding blend of Mare of Easttown and The Outsider—a haunting family saga wrapped in spine-tingling horror. Set in a small, tightknit Virginia town with a dark secret, the story follows Police Chief Rachel Kennan as she struggles to hold her family together after a tragic loss while investigating a string of disappearances that have rocked her religious community. As an ominous force in the forest begins to call to the children of the town, Rachel and her family must face the dangers within their community—and within themselves—before it’s too late. With chilling Appalachian folklore, emotionally charged family drama, and atmospheric horror, Nowhere is a gripping debut that asks: what do we bury in our hearts, and what happens when it comes to the surface? Allison Gunn is a writer, researcher, and podcaster who explores the whimsical and the strange. A University of Maryland alum, she has extensively studied marginalized communities, Appalachian folklore, and the occult. She lives in West Virginia with her twin daughters, her dog, and a mischievous cat. Nowhere is her first novel. Information Source: Four Seasons Books | eventbrite

How to Think Like a Medieval Writer: Discovering Ideas | Faculty of English, Room GR05

Literary Arts
This talk by Rachael Hodgson will lay out the evidence for how some medieval writers thought about both thinking and writing, including how different writers generated creative ideas. In the process, we will encounter some medieval authors, many of whom had very radical ideas of what their writing could achieve, existing in a creative world in which the notions of authorship were both more blurry and yet, perhaps, more significant than they are today. This talk will conclude by thinking about how ideas of discovery and creativity have changed since the Middle Ages – and how we can use practices from the past to inspire us today, with some workable examples.
