PERFECTION: Vincenzo Latronico in conversation with Jess White | Blackwell's Bookshop

We are so excited to welcome Vincenzo Latronico to the shop to discuss his novel PERFECTION, a spare and scathing sociological novel about the emptiness of contemporary existence. Vincenzo will be in conversation with Jess White. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Millennial expat couple Anna and Tom are living the dream in Berlin, in a bright, affordable, plant-filled apartment. Their life as young digital creatives revolves around slow cooking, Danish furniture, sexual experimentation and the city’s twenty-four-hour party scene – an ideal existence shared by an entire generation and tantalizingly lived out on social media. But beyond the images, dissatisfaction and ennui burgeon. Work becomes repetitive. Friends move back home, have children, grow up. Frustrated that their progressive politics amount to little more in practice than boycotting Uber, tipping in cash, or never eating tuna, Anna and Tom make a fruitless attempt at political activism. Feeling increasingly trapped in their picture-perfect life, the couple takes ever more radical steps in the pursuit of an authenticity and a sense of purpose perennially beyond their grasp. About the author: Vincenzo Latronico was born in Rome in 1984 and currently lives in Berlin. He is an art critic and has translated many books into Italian, by authors such as George Orwell, Oscar Wilde, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hanif Kureishi.Perfection is his fourth novel, the first to be translated into English. The translator is Sophie Hughes. Perfection is a jewel of a novel: precisely cut, intricately faceted, prismatically dazzling at its heart. - Lauren Groff, author ofThe Vaster Wilds Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. Family conflict, generational guilt and restorative justice come together in ALL OF US, a powerful stage play by Oxford author and playwright Rebecca Abrams. An exciting revisioning of Sophocles’ Electra, the play follows a family fractured by domestic violence and incarceration. As one family member comes to the end of their prison sentence, each of them must confront how to move on and heal. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with playwright Rebecca Abrams, restorative justice practitioner Helen Lord, former criminal barrister and prison chaplain Harry Potter, and others. “A compelling story with…great dramatic writing.” – New Zealand Theatreview “My real hope for this play is that it can help people to connect with a sense of compassion and find hope in dark places.” – Miranda Warner, Producer “It’s the only thing (play, movie, etc) I’ve seen that really explores the complex journey for each person caught in this kind of situation.” – audience member, Nelson NZ Content warning: the play covers themes of family violence and sexual harm. Hello, Dolly! premiered on Broadway on January 16, 1964 at the St. James Theatre.
