Love in Exile Love in Exile is a meditation on love, fulfilment, and escaping the confines of a ‘normal life’. Having spent much of her late twenties and early thirties trying – and often failing – to find the relationship, career, sex life and social life she equated with happiness and success, Faye began to realise that many of the women around her were also burning out in pursuit of these ideals, where the stakes seemed high and the rewards often disappointing. If we reject this idea of what a young woman’s life should be, Faye asks, what comes next? Shon Faye Shon Fayeis author of the acclaimed bestsellerThe Transgender Issue. Her work has been published in, among others, theGuardian, Independent,British VogueandVICE. She writes an advice column, Dear Shon, for Vogue.com. Born in Bristol, she now lives in London. Loading.... Exhibition and Symposium | Jesus College Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub

Feb 11, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Arts
Fine Art
Over the past year, up-and-coming artists from Central St Martins have been working on an experimental creative project with scientists from the University of Oxford which aimed to push the boundaries of art and science. The project saw the artists and biologists, statisticians and geneticists immerse themselves in each other's disciplines, find their synergies and collaboratively produce new artworks involving digital approaches. This exhibition and symposium presents the collaborations of seven new artist-researcher pairs who approached the transdisciplinary across different digital media: a reimagination of tree sequencing through film; a conversation between AI and artist; a reflection on personal data; the visualisation and sonification of water molecules; our genetics and their landscapes; nanobody design through knitted sculptures; and upending ideas of perfection through consumerist 3D-printed works. By intentionally embracing the 'loading' state, the event challenges conventional approaches to scientific collaboration, and envisions a future where meaningful partnerships require patience, deep engagement, and space for unexpected discoveries. This reimagining of transdisciplinary work suggests a new paradigm: one where pause and reflection become catalysts for innovation, rather than obstacles to overcome. Loading...aims to engage the audience in interactive sessions and presentations, followed by a wine reception to encourage discussion of the works, and promote connections among art and research communities. A magazine publication about the works will also be launched during the event. EVENT PROGRAMME 3pm Doors open 3-5pm Exhibition open to the public 5pm Symposium 6.30pm Networking Reception with refreshments 7.30pm Event closes The exhibition is free and open to the public for dropping in at any time between 3pm and 5pm. The symposium will include talks by the artist-researcher pairs about their artworks and collaboration and offer a chance for joint discussion which will continue into the networking reception. THE VENUE Entrance to this event is via the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub entrance on Market Street, Oxford (opposite Wagamama). Lift access available to all floors. Oxford
Arts
Calling everyone interested in creativity; artists, academics, creatives, teachers, community leaders, students and curious minds The world is facing some big challenges—from climate change to conflicts and declining trust in leadership and the democratic systems that put them there. How can creativity help us rise to these challenges? And what role can cities, universities, and artists play in shaping a better future? Come along to a relaxed and collaborative afternoon where your voice matters. Together, we’ll explore how storytelling, performance, music, writing, and the arts can help strengthen our communities and reimagine what democracy could look like. Bring your own questions, and let’s find fresh perspectives together. Why this matters? This conversation is inspired by a question being explored this year by one of our Visiting Fellows, theatre maker and arts leader Erica Whyman: Should we take the radical curiosity of artists more seriously? And if so, how can universities and cities help creativity thrive?Read Erica’s personal invitation to you The city of Oxford—with its diversity, global reach, and the very real hardship in many of its communities—is the perfect place to think about these questions. But the conversation is not about answers from one person—it’s about all of us. Whether you’re an artist, teacher, researcher, student, community leader, or just curious, your perspective is welcome. Taking place over an afternoon, the session is designed to be informal, interactive, and engaging, giving everyone the chance to contribute. What to ExpectA warm welcome – We will begin with an introduction to the central question and time to reflect and connect with others.Shape the conversation– Propose topics or questions you’d like to explore – big ideas, personal experiences, or practical suggestions – these will help shape the agenda.Join in at your own pace – Whether you want to actively contribute, or simply listen, there’s no wrong way to take part.Creative collaboration – We’ll use theatre-inspired techniques to create a space for fresh ideas and meaningful conversation.By the end, you’ll leave with new perspectives and connections to inspire action and creativity. Meet the facilitatorsErica Whyman Erica is a theatre maker, facilitator, and Visiting Fellow at Wadham College with over 25 years of leadership in the arts. As the Creative Lead for the Leys Festival and a champion for using creativity to strengthen communities, she is passionate about exploring the transformative role of the arts. Lee Simpson Lee Simpson is the Co-Artistic Director of the award-winning theatre company Improbable. He will facilitate the conversation in Open Space, a democratic and inclusive format that empowers participants to explore issues or ideas together that they care about most. Open Space has been used everywhere—from community workshops to international peace talks— to ensure we do the work that we want to do together. Why should you join us?Creativity is a powerful tool for change. Let’s talk about how we can use it to rise to the challenges of our time, support artists and storytellers, and build stronger connections across our communities. Bring your curiosity and questions for an inspiring afternoon of imagination, collaboration, and fresh perspectives. Information Source: The Cultural Programme | eventbrite

Lunchtime Talk: 'Alice's Adventures in Oxford' | Museum of Oxford

Literary Arts
Alice's Adventures in Oxford - Real people as Wonderland Characters (and some who weren't!) Within the imaginative fantasy of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ books lie many Oxford realities, including a number of real people who feature as 'Wonderland' characters. Many were University acquaintances, but some were townspeople, known to either Lewis Carroll or the real Alice (Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church). There was 'one of the thorny kind', for instance, and an eccentric headgear specialist whose dog Alice remembered fondly even when she was eighty years old. Additionally, author Lewis Carroll was friendly with many Oxford families after the publications of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass'. His skill as a photographer and inventor of games made him a popular guest, including at the homes of families whose names live on as the Oxford institutions of Lucy & Co and Mallams, the auctioneers. Join local historian, guide, and author Mark Davies (a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society) for a talk which will reveal some pertinent, surprising, and long-lasting aspects of Victorian Oxford through the curious medium of the world's most famous children's story. Complimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or at the Museum Shop. Sales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities, community engagement projects, schools workshops, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. Mark Daviesis an Oxford local historian, public speaker, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!), historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder) and a biography of the first English hot air balloonist, James Sadler (King of All Balloons). He is a Trustee of the Lewis Carroll society, a member of the Society of Authors, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. Access: There is step-free, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. Accessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor, before entering the Museum. S J Bradley & Rachel Bower in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

Literary Arts
We're excited to welcome authors S J Bradley and Rachel Bower to the shop to discuss their respective works; short story collection Maps of Imaginary Towns and novel It Comes From The River. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book, which is available at a special launch event price of £14.99 on the evening or as part of the advance ticket. About the books: From futuristic colonies to drab estates, the inventive stories in S J Bradley's MAPS OF IMAGINARY TOWNS showcase a remarkable range. With lyrical prose and psychological depth, Bradley illuminates the quiet heroism pulsing through seemingly ordinary lives. Beleaguered, yet resourceful social workers battle towering workloads; a harassed elderly childminder collapses under the strain; a victim of domestic abuse strikes out for freedom and disgruntled workers in dead-end jobs dream of a brighter future. Infused with the folklore of Northern England, It Comes from the River is an unforgettable, uncanny debut about violence, resilience and hope - and the power of women when they work together. In IT COMES FROM THE RIVER, Alex is trying to hold her growing family together with a husband who is becoming more and more difficult to keep happy. Lauren hopes that the new man in her life might present a fresh start for her and her two boys. And Nancy's son has moved her into a care home where she feels entirely out of place, longing for her lost dog while dreaming of her own escape. But there is something else at play here. Something lurking in the water or at the end of an unlit street; a shadow in a bag of strangers' clothing; a chorus of voices calling in the distance. As each woman's world spirals from her grasp, they feel it getting closer, revealing the truth of what binds them together, and what must be done to set each of them free... About the authors: S J BRADLEY is a writer from Wakefield. Her short fiction has appeared in various journals and anthologies including Conradology and Resist! Stories of Uprising from Comma Press, New Willesden Short Stories 7, Queen Mobs, Litro magazine, and Untitled Books. VICTORIAN PSYCHO - Virginia Feito in conversation with Xavier Aldana Reyes | Blackwell's Bookshop

We can't wait to welcome Virginia Feito to the shop to discussion her gruesomely brilliant new novel VICTORIAN PSYCHO, which probes the psyche of a bloodthirsty governess in Victorian England. Virginia will be in conversation with Xavier Aldana Reyes, a founder of the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House prepared to play the perfect Victorian governess. She'll dutifully tutor her charges, Drusilla and Andrew, tell them bedtime stories, and only joke about eating children. But the longer Winifred spends within the estate's dreary confines and the more she learns of the perversions and pathetic preoccupations of the Pounds family, the more trouble she has sticking to her plan. Whether creeping across the moonlit lawns in her undergarments or gently tormenting the house staff, Winifred struggles at every turn to stifle the horrid compulsions of her past until her chillingly dark imagination breaches the feeble boundary of reality on Christmas morning. Wielding her signature sardonic wit and a penchant for the gorgeously macabre, Virginia Feito returns with a vengeance in Victorian Psycho. About the author: Raised in Madrid and Paris, Virginia Feito studied English and Drama at Queen Mary University of London. Her first novel, Mrs. March, was published in 2021. She writes for Vanity Fair Spain. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting.
