Exhibitions
Japanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29. Hiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles. In kabuki, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion.

UNEVEN - Sam Mills on Bisexuality, Identity & Art | Blackwell's Bookshop

Literary Arts
We're delighted to be welcoming Sam Mills back to the shop to hear her discuss her non-fiction book, UNEVEN: Nine Lives That Redefined Bisexuality. Sam will be in conversation with Stu Hennigan, author of Ghost Signs. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. About the book: UNEVEN tells the stories of nine pioneering bisexual artists, writers and musicians that will change our understanding of the world's largest sexual minority. Bisexuality is often seen as something temporary, in spite of increasing openness around it: a sign of immaturity or a waystation on the road to a different sexuality altogether, rather than its own distinct entity. In this beautifully written cultural history, Sam Mills reclaims bisexuality as its own identity, interweaving her experience of being bisexual with illuminating portraits of a clutch of artists, writers and musicians, including Colette, Bessie Smith, Marlene Dietrich, Anaïs Nin, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Madonna. Celebrating the resilience, diversity and spirit of the bisexual community through the ages, Uneven explores how each of these trailblazing figures have been misunderstood; how social attitudes affected their sexuality, their relationships and their work; how LGBTQ+ identities have been portrayed from the Victorian era to the present day; and how attitudes have progressed. Illuminating, personal and entertaining, Uneven paints a nuanced portrait of a sidelined community. About the author: SAM MILLS is the author of The Quiddity of Will Self and The Watermark, along with three young adult novels, including the award-winning Blackout. Her memoir about being a carer, The Fragments of My Father, was published in 2020. Sam has written for a number of publications, including the Guardian, Independent, 3 AM and London Magazine. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. If we reject this idea of what a young woman’s life should be, Faye asks, what comes next? Shon Faye Shon Fayeis author of the acclaimed bestsellerThe Transgender Issue. Her work has been published in, among others, theGuardian, Independent,British VogueandVICE. She writes an advice column, Dear Shon, for Vogue.com. Born in Bristol, she now lives in London. Join the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies for this book launch to celebrate the exciting recent publication of Contemporary Body Horror (Cambridge Elements, 2024) by our Centre member, Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes. The event will begin with refreshments from 17.00 in the Geoffrey Manton atrium (outside Lecture Theatre 5 on the ground floor). There will be the opportunity to buy discounted copies of the book at a publisher's stall. If joining online, the link will be emailed to you two days in advance of the event and on the morning of the event as a reminder. Please book at least 24 hours in advance in order to register for the online link and join us from 17.20 onwards on Teams. Contemporary Body Horror https://www.cambridge.org/core/elements/abs/contemporary-body-horror/10961433A22AB27B686E06079F5EAECF 'Body horror', a horror subgenre concerned with transformation, loss of control and the human body's susceptibility to disease, infection and external harm, has moved into the mainstream to become one of the greatest repositories of biopolitical discourse. Put simply, body horror acts out the power flows of modern life, visualising often imperceptible or ignored processes of marginalisation and behavioural policing, and revealing how interrelations between different social spheres (medical, legal, political, educational) produce embodied identity. This book offers the first sustained study of the types of body horror that have been popular in the twenty-first century and centres on the representational and ideological work they carry out. It proposes that, thanks to the progressive vision of feminist, queer and anti-racist practitioners, this important subgenre has expanded its ethical horizons and even found a sense of celebratory liberation in fantastic metamorphoses redolent of contemporary activist movements. Xavier Aldana Reyes is Reader in English Literature and Film at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. His publications include the books Contemporary Body Horror (Cambridge University Press, 2024), Gothic Cinema (Routledge, 2020), Horror: A Literary History (British Library Publishing, 2016), Horror Film and Affect (Routledge, 2016) and Body Gothic (UWP, 2014). Xavier is co-president of the International Gothic Association and chief editor of the Horror Studies academic book series. Information Source: The Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies | eventbrite

We are delighted to celebrate the publication of OLD SOUL by Susan Barker in partnership with Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Susan will be in conversation with Zoe Li, founder of online bookshop Juniper by the Sea. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book, which is available at a special launch event price of £14.99 on the evening or as part of the advance ticket. About the book: When two grieving strangers meet by chance in Osaka airport they uncover a disturbing connection. Jake's best friend and Mariko's twin brother each died, 6,000 miles apart, in brutal and unfathomable circumstances. Each encountered a mesmerising, dark-haired woman in the days before their deaths. A woman who came looking for Mariko - and then disappeared. Jake, who has carried his loss and guilt for a decade, finds himself compelled to follow the trail set by Mariko's revelations. It's a trail that weaves across continents and centuries, leading back to the many who have died - in strange and terrifying and eerily similar ways - and those they left behind: bewildered, disbelieved, yet resolutely sure of what they saw. And, at the centre of it all, there is the same beguiling woman. Her name may have changed, but her purpose has never wavered, and as Jake races to discover who, or what she is, she has already made her next choice. But will knowing her secret be enough to stop her? This the kind of story you tell around a campfire as the lights of civilization begin flicker out around you; a global, intelligent, and ambitious archetypal nightmare - KRISTEN ROUPENIAN, author of Cat Person Susan Barker’sOld Soul beguiles, terrifies, and utterly seduces you as swiftly and slyly as the mysterious woman at its center. It’s at once a thriller, a postmodern mystery, and an existential horror tale, but perhaps most deeply it speaks to our current moment: the drift and terrors of loneliness, the risks of intimacy and a piercing nostalgia that never lets us go - MEGAN ABBOTT, author of El Dorado Drive About the author: SUSAN BARKER is the author of four books. Her third novel,The Incarnations, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and Notable Book, a Kirkus Reviews’ Top Ten Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Kirkus Prize for Fiction. We realise it can be difficult for a goalkeeper to be spotted, and we wanted to give our goalkeepers more opportunities. We have since opened it to all goalkeepers and built great relationships with professional clubs. Since the inception of our trial days two years ago, we've been instrumental in turning the dreams of numerous goalkeepers into reality. Three goalkeepers have been signed by Brighton, two each by Hull City and Reading, and one each by Portsmouth, Barnsley, Bristol City and Oxford United after being spotted at our trial days. The most recent one, Nottingham Forest signed Charlie in October after getting spotted on our trial day. Three of these goalkeepers, like Zach, have been called up to the England setup since signing. One keeper secured a scholarship at Colchester United, and Chelsea Ladies signed a girl after being identified at our trial days. These success stories are a testament to the opportunities we provide, even for those who might have thought their chance had gone. All your child might need this opportunity, and they’ll have a great time doing it! On the trial day, your child can showcase their talent and have lots of fun doing it. Plus, experience playing at some fantastic facilities. What have you got to lose? Sells Pro Training will provide a link between the professional and grassroots game, creating opportunities for students to meet and train with top professional keepers. We will be the first steps in developing the goalkeepers of the future with the aim of creating pathways for other students into coaching, scholarships or a high level of football. Via our close links to the professional game, our goalkeepers will be given a chance to be seen by top clubs. • Professional facilities • Proven results • Professional coaching • Direct contact with professional football clubs • Showcase sessions designed to help you shine • Friendly approach to the day • Feedback to help you develop Premier League Academy Goalkeeping Coach“Having attended Sells residential camps and sessions, I have been very impressed with the level of quality coaching the young goalkeepers receive, as well as the environment which supports learning and enjoyment.“The content of the sessions not only challenges the goalkeepers but also replicates the demands of the modern game.“The attention to detail on all aspects of the camp was tremendous.“The care and support provided for each young goalkeepers, on both a personal and goalkeeping level were second to none.” Under 23 Championship Goalkeeper Coach“Kids smiling and having fun is always the first thing I think of after attending Matt and his team’s events.“The facilities sourced are top class, and the content and learning that goes on is my opinion is excellent.“The environment they create together, with the care and effort they all put into each child is admirable, and I always look forward to attending their events.” Championship Academy Goalkeeping Coach“I just wanted to say a big thank you for having me last night.“It was great to see so many goalkeepers and chat to all the staff, and it looked a fantastic operation.“To see so many goalkeepers flying around as they were shows what a great job you guys are doing!” Information Source: Sells Pro Training | eventbrite

Book at Lunchtime: The Book Makers | Seminar Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter

Feb 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED

Literary Arts
Book at Lunchtime is delighted to welcome Professor Adam Smyth (English) to discuss his acclaimed work The Book Makers. The wonderful review in the Financial Times last year provides a taste of how captivating this discussion will be. This is a triumphant and seductive story; it is also one to which Adam Smyth’s absorbing The Book-Makers presents an alternative. The flipside, he writes, “is the world of jobbing printing: the production of cheap, everyday, usually ephemeral texts, the torrent of nonbook print that has circulated in the world since the 1450s”. The pink paper (or pink-tinged screen) on which you’re reading this now is a living part of that story: a testament to the way in which books have only ever formed a tiny part of the crowded landscape that is print culture. With this reframed understanding of progress in mind, Book-Makers explores the lives of a handful of men and women who each contributed something distinctive to the history of the book. The story they collectively tell is not one of continuous technological improvement but rather a cyclical drama of making and remaking of the idea of the book itself. Join Professor Smyth and an expert panel to discuss The Book Makers at Book at Lunchtime on Wednesday 5 February. 12.30pm lunch. 1pm-2pm discussion. Information Source: TORCH | eventbrite
