Feb 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Dance
Julia and Nicolette invite you to be part of an interactive studio sharing on Friday 21st February 3-4pm. This will be a chance to participate in some of their research so far. During this residency, we will have begun a new piece of research taking themes of transformation and change as our starting point. We will explore aspects of our inner selves and our perceptions of the world around us through sound and movement and playing with the idea of taking ourselves apart, putting ourselves back together and, as a result, becoming different from the way we were before. We will use the studio as a playground for our imaginations with different areas of the room set up with opportunities for making sound, interacting with materials and moving, both in response to what we sense around us and following our own individual interests. We will be mapping our findings through writing and drawing, recorded conversations, audio recordings, photos and video. Supported through Dance Base’s Paid Artist Residency Programme Information Source: Dance Base Scotland | eventbrite

Closing Concert: PlusMinus Ensemble | West Court, Edinburgh College of Art

Feb 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Plus-Minus brings to life Martin Parker’s mirror-shift , a new work which corrals a host of AI music creation, development and performance tools together and drags them through the wringer of contemporary experimental music. The piece explores the sonic identities that form when we shift the AI mirror from reflecting us head-on, to glancing side-long across our rapidly developing landscape of human-computer entanglements. Then two works that each do arranging in a different way. Like the many chamber versions of orchestral works made for Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances in Vienna from 1918, we include Mark Knoop’s intimate arrangement of Laurence Crane’s orchestral piece Cobbled Section After Cobbled Section . The show concludes with the premiere of American composer Aaron Wyanski’s arrangement of Arnold Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra , the latest instalment in his Schoenberg in Hi-Fi series. Schoenberg in Hi-Fi is an ongoing series of albums that posit an alternate reality. In my speculative universe, Schoenberg lives a little longer — into the late 1950s: a time when a new commodity was reshaping the music industry, the stereo LP. As high-fidelity audio entered the homes of more and more middle-class Americans, record companies began producing and marketing albums around how unique the sounds on it were, whether that was in the exotica of Lex Baxter, the space music of Sun Ra, or the extreme eclecticism of Esquivel. Though mostly aimed at a wide popular audience, countless liner notes spun infinite variations of the same boast: you’ve never heard this before. Schoenberg had been living in Los Angeles for many years, and had he been alive when the Capitol Records building was completed in 1956, he would have been a stone’s throw away from one of the centres of mid-century pop music. What if an executive from Capitol had become taken with the idea of presenting Schoenberg’s works in the manner of the many “jazzing up the classics” albums produced in this period? — Aaron Wyanski About Plus-Minus Ensemble is a UK based ensemble committed to commissioning new work and placing it alongside recent and landmark modern repertoire. Formed in 2003, Plus-Minus is distinguished by its interest in performative, electroacoustic and conceptual pieces, and experimental open works such as Stockhausen’s 1963 classic, from which the group takes its name. Plus-Minus is directed by Matthew Shlomowitz, Vicky Wright and Mark Knoop. Edinburgh City Orchestra - Elgar and Tchaikovsky | St Giles' Cathedral

Feb 22, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Orchestra
The Edinburgh City Orchestra, and conductor Peter Le Tissier, return to Edinburgh's St. Giles' Cathedral to present two works of intrigue, mystery, and powerful expression. Elgar's first major international success, the Enigma variations were first performed in 1899 under the composer's baton, before achieving international success within a few short years. A piece deeply layered with meaning, Elgar's theme-and-variations are, ostensibly, a portrait of the composer's 'friends pictured within'. Indeed, the title of each variation bears the initials of the person to whom it is dedicated, with whimsical characteristic reflected musically (the haughty laugh of a friend, the aggressive playing of an amateur pianist); but on a deeper level Elgar referred to the work as hiding a dark saying under the surface. The enigma of the popular title refers to Elgar's cryptic clue that the true theme of the work goes, but is not played and has led to many years of speculation as to the true theme . Answers have included Auld Lang Syne, themes from the operas of Mozart, or even a non-musical idea that connects the work. Whatever the solution to the riddle, the music has become iconic of a reawakening of British composition internationally - the dark, ominous opening theme contrasts with themes of bombast, heartfelt melodies (including the famous Nimrod theme) and finishing with a bombastic depiction the composer dedicated to himself. After the break, we perform one of Tchaikovksy's best-known and most deeply heartfelt romantic works - the 5th Symphony, in E Minor. Connected by a common theme across all four movements, the symphony is a work of extreme expressive clarity and, in true Tchaikovskian fashion, bounces between deep sorrow and bombastic joy. An opening movement prefaced with doleful clarinets sparks into energetic life with themes of various romantic, dance-like characters through to brassy, energetic wildness. The second movement is famous for its extensive horn solo. Tchaikovsky is at his most heartfelt in this passionate movement that reaches truly grand climaxes. The third movement, a waltz very much in the style of Tchaikovsky's ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, provides a welcome break before the grand, overwhelming and optimistic finale to the work. Do be sure to secure your ticket to this special event fast, as numbers are limited. We hope to see you at the performance! Information Source: Edinburgh City Orchestra | eventbrite

Comedy & Bluegrass About Strange Public Records, in Edinburgh | French Institute of Scotland

Feb 26, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Theater
One night only! Great comedy from America and incredible bluegrass music. This is unlike any comedy show you've seen. All the humor is inspired by actual, strange public documents, such as: FCC complaints about Big Bang Theory being too violent, FBI profiles of sports stars, and creative immigration applications. The band includes Maddie Witler (Della Mae, Lonely Heartstring Band), Kathleen Parks (Twisted Pine), Austin Alfano, Chris Lord, and Nick Conte. If you enjoy history, journalism, libraries, banjos, archives, or humor discovered in unusual places, then this is the show for you. Come for the bluegrass, stay for the laughs. Or come for the laughs, and be pleasantly surprised by the music. Questions? Contact Curtis Raye: foiacomedy@gmail.com FAQs Why comedy AND bluegrass? We LOVE public records, but we know it's not a great idea to talk about them for 90 minutes straight. So we've assembled incredible musicians to make this a complete night of entertainment. Is this really a comedy show about public records? That sounds....unusual. Absolutely. We're nerds for public records, and we are comedy writers in New York. This show combines those two passions. I like bluegrass but know nothing about public records. Is this show for me? Definitely. The musical line-up is incredible, so you'll be happy. And you'll also enjoy the public records part of the show. It's funny, and you may learn something. Can I bring my children? The public record does contain several references to adult topics (Americans are naughty, you know?), so keep that in mind. But they'll certainly enjoy the music. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No. Who is the host? Curtis Raye has spent time in Washington DC, New York City, and working on a presidential campaign in Iowa. He's observed the inherent comedy in public records. School board meetings, court testimony, and even White House menus are treasure troves of human folly. And he has assembled the most absurd ones in a tightly packed 90 minute live evening of comedy and bluegrass. Why are we in the UK? We have a feeling that you all enjoy smart humor and blazing fast string music. It's our first overseas tour! Please come see our unique show. You won't regret it! Meet the Band: Mandolin: Maddie Witler (Lonely Heartstring Band, Della Mae) Kathleen Parks (Twisted Pine) Guitar: Nick Conte (Blue Plate Special) Bass: Austin Alfano (Red Tailed Rounders) Banjo: Chris Lord (The Vanguards) Information Source: Curtis Raye | eventbrite
