Come along an learn some of the Traditional Drawing Skills relating to Architecture alongisde the skill of Drawing from your Imagination. We'll look at capturing depth and detail and we'll play drawing games together to help each of us conceptualise and design our own piece of architecture. Anne Hardy works across sculpture and large-scale installation. Her works incorporate found materials and cast objects in delicate cosmologies that explore energetic states, sentience, transformation, fragility and strength. Hardy’s large-scale sculptural installations, ‘FIELDworks’, combine physical materials with light and sound to create immersive and sensual environments that derive from places she calls ‘pockets of wild space’ – gaps in the urban space where materials, atmospheres, and emotions gather. Hardy thinks of these works as moments out of time – voids within the ‘everyday’ space, that act as a spell or dream in which to re-encounter our relationships to the worlds that we inhabit. Anne Hardy will talk about her large-scale installations for institutions like Tate Britain, Museum Boijmans and ArtNight, her recent residency at The Chinati Foundation Marfa, USA and the new body of work ‘Survival Spell’ that she began there. Retired solicitor Ken Swinton has assiduously researched the history and life stories of the owners of an Edinburgh New Town crescent to produce a fascinating picture of life in late Georgian Edinburgh. Ken, the editor of Scottish Law Gazette, and his wife bought an apartment in St Bernard’s Crescent, in Stockbridge in 2016 and split their time between Edinburgh and their principal home in Broughty Ferry. That purchase provided the impetus to research who had lived in the elegant townhouses which were built two centuries ago according to designs approved by the well-known portrait painter, Sir Henry Raeburn. The result of his research was the publication of a History of St Bernard’s Crescent last year which includes over 100 biographies of some of the more celebrated residents. ————— Graham Ogilvy is a journalist, author and publisher. Musicians – and other humans – have long been inspired by the sea, and by the voices of its mythological or actual inhabitants. While past generations told tales of singing mermaids and selkies, more recently the fascination has focused on how some very real species – cetaceans in particular – use sound in what appear to us as musical ways. But whales and dolphins are not the only sea creatures who use sound to communicate, and the voices of others, too, are revealing important information about the oceans. Scientists who study marine environments are using sound detection and recording technologies in their research — and capturing soundbites from a range of other sea creatures in the process. This concert features composed and improvised music that responds to the sea and the voices of those who live there, played by Alex South (clarinets) and Una MacGlone (double bass). Alex South's artistic research has focused in particular on whales: his PhD dissertation, titled Cetacean Citations, analysed and responded musically to rhythm in whalesong, including how individual whale 'singers' differ in their technique. In addition to playing together with the recorded voices of migrating whales as they pass through Scottish waters, South and MacGlone's will also improvise on recordings of crabs and cod provided by Edinburgh PhD candidate Isabel Key. Marine scientist Laurence de Clippele will be present to explain the developing science behind these recordings, its potential for understanding and protecting marine environments and biodiversity, and to share insights from her own research. The concert also features a performance of the piece Abyssal Zone (2020) by Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, inspired by one of the deepest and darkest regions of the Earth's oceans. Alex South is a practising musician and scholar with research interests in the fields of ecomusicology, zoomusicology, biomusicology, animal communication, animal culture, and animal ethics. His interdisciplinary PhD (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland/University of St Andrews, 2024) combined practice-led research from an ecomusicological perspective with bioacoustical studies on the rhythmic variability of humpback whale song. He teaches at at the University of St Andrews and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanites at the University of Edinburgh. As a performer, he regularly playd and records improvised and contemporary classical music with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, Collective Endeavours, Ensemble Thing, and in numerous other formations. Compositions resulting from his doctoral research have been performed at festivals in the UK and abroad, and featured in CBC documentary ‘The Musical Animal’. Una MacGlone is an improviser and researcher working across performance and community contexts. She began her professional career as a freelance double bassist, working with orchestras across the UK. Session work with indie/pop musician Future Pilot AKA opened up a world of interesting connections, leading to work with David Byrne on the film score Young Adam. She is a founding member of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO) and leads on an innovative muti-year project with Gaelic Arts Organisation Ceòl ‘s Craic combining Gaelic song and stories with improvisation. Her compositions and improvisations have been played on BBC Radio 3’s The New Music Show, Freeness, Late Junction and Exposure. She has also been part of televised improvisation performances in Germany and Japan. She plays on over 20 commercially available albums. She has an international profile as an improvisation teacher in Higher Education and has given workshops and lectured across Europe and North America. Una is currently Lecturer in Music at the University of Edinburgh. Laurence de Clippele is a marine ecologist who studies both deep-sea benthic habitats such as cold-water coral reefs and sponge grounds as well as shallow temperate and tropical coastal habitats. She is an expert in using machine learning methods to understand how biodiversity is changing in time and space. She mostly uses image and passive acoustic monitoring data in combination with bathymetric, current speed and other environmental data. The aim of her current research is to combine knowledge and approaches from the fields of marine ecology, acoustics and computer vision to develop new tools and methods that contribute to extracting ecologically relevant information from big datasets quickly and robustly. Elijah - Make The Ting - Book Launch Close The App, Make The Ting is a collection of ideas shared by Elijah that began in July 2021, as the Covid 19 lockdowns were ending in the UK. They started as simple notes questioning what the music and creative scenes would look like after being shut down for 18 months shared regularly on Instagram, then developed into a multimedia project that spanned visual installations, an album with grime MC Jammz, a club night and a lecture series that toured the world. Set within the beautiful Victorian building of The Heart of Newhaven, students will respond to its rooms, hallways, and staircases. Throughout the course, students will build impressions of interior spaces by identifying rhythmic qualities such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved lines, as well as the repetition of shapes. They’ll also be encouraged to see and draw invisible lines that guide them through the space, finding connections between walls, floors, and objects rather than isolating elements. Students will learn to layer marks to explore and describe room volume, creating an illusion of space. By working on small drawings in sketchbooks and progressing through short, exploratory exercises, students will develop their skills and understanding of perspective, culminating in a resolved, larger-format drawing in the final session. Can an Opera be written in one week? Our students of Composition and Creative Writing will create a series of new mini operas to share by the end of the Week of Sound. Students from our Creative Writing Programmes (LLC) and Students from our Composition Programmes (ECA) will meet one another for the first time on the Monday morning of our Week of Sound. They will work together to create a series of brand new short Operas, mentored through the process by Jane McKie and Gareth Williams. From first ideas and sketches, into the rehearsal and workshop process, through to live performances by Friday evening, the entire opera writing process is distilled into five short days. Come hear the results of this experiment on Friday at 4pm in the Reid Concert Hall. On the final day of their residency the artists will present early stage ideas explored through the week, followed by a conversation. This residency will continue work on a new piece by two of Scotland’s only Butoh dancers. Butoh’s founder, Hijikata Tatsumi, characterised it as a ‘dance of darkness’ and a ‘rebellion of the body’, concerned with liberating the human form from social conditioning and repression. We’re using these definitions to develop our first collaboration. Specifically, we’re beginning from Pik Kei’s experiences of artistic suppression in Hong Kong, where there is an ongoing crackdown on freedom of speech and creative expression. Our overall statement is about the secrets we carry in our flesh from our personal, cultural, and ancestral history, and the confusion of living in societies which pronounce themselves free but proscribe all but a limited range of life-ways (capitalist, production-oriented, and beholden to an infinite growth narrative which the Anthropocene shows is ecologically impossible). Is this really what we spent millions of years evolving for? And if our bodies are free, why are they boiling with incoherent rage / unexpressed tenderness? About Paul Michael Henry Paul Michael Henry is a dancer/musician/writer based in Glasgow. Their work is informed by Butoh dance, punk rock and ritual, and is performed all over the world. Their themes are political & spiritual, dealing with love, body neglect, environmental destruction and soul atrophy in consumerist society. Michael is also Artistic Director and creator of UNFIX, an evolving festival platforming ecologically committed performance, dance, music, film and discussion. UNFIX is intended as a contribution to the waking up of the human species to our predicament in an age of climate change, ecological threat and massive inequality. It is based in Glasgow and is ongoing there and in New York City, Bologna and Tokyo. About Pik Kei Wong Pik Kei Wong is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Wong’s choreography and performances question stereotypes from a female perspective. Her works evoke a revaluation of attitudes by and towards – women, body and desires, especially sex. Major works include: when time limps, Woman.Body, 19841012 and Nook. With performances in Iceland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore & China. Wong seeks to enrich her choreography through contemplation of social issues. She anticipates creating more works from the perspective of women that question traditional asian mindsets.
