Join Fleur McDonald in conversation with Nina Campbell as she discusses her latest book 'The Prospect' When you dig, will you strike gold ... or unearth dangerous secrets? An exciting new series from the queen of rural crime No matter how much or how little you find, you will never, ever own the gold. It will always own you. After a scandal, investigative reporter Zara Ellison and her partner, policeman Jack Higgins have moved to Kalgoorlie - each struggling with this fresh start. This wild mining town has its own rules, and its inhabitants - drawn by the lure of gold and riches - guard their secrets carefully. Zara feels adrift in the swirling red dust of the lawless, bush city, without sources or any leads for the hard-hitting stories she's known for. Jack is out of the detective squad and trying to find his feet back in uniform. On an isolated stretch of highway, a pair of grey nomads is involved in a devastating accident which leaves more questions than answers. Zara starts digging for her own kind of gold, while Jack's investigation sends him on a parallel path towards a dangerous smuggling ring. In the wide-open spaces of the outback, some secrets are buried deep. Books available for purchase and signing.

The Art History of Howl’s Moving Castle with Helen McCarthy | Brighthelm Centre
May 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Centre
What do a Welsh children’s book, the Iraq War, and a master of Japanese animation have in common? They collide in Howl’s Moving Castle—the dazzling follow-up to Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning Spirited Away. Though now beloved by audiences worldwide, the film almost wasn’t Miyazaki’s. Originally intended for another director, this spellbinding story only came under his care after global events reshaped its destiny. Howl’s Moving Castle, like many other Ghibli films, finds its roots in a European children’s book, in this case Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 book of the same name. It was an important book for the New Mythology movement, which is defined by the emergence of a new heroic archetype that transcends old cultural concepts and confronts them with modern ideals. The central character, Sophie Hatter, with her courage and determination in the face of difficulty, is an ideal New Mythology hero. Sophie also fits neatly into the Miyazaki canon of brave, capable female leads - with a unique and interesting twist. Miyazaki’s adaptation, however, adds his signature touch: a poignant anti-war message, breathtaking artistry, and one of Studio Ghibli’s rare adult romances. Discover the twists, turns, and heart of Howl’s Moving Castle, a film that redefined bravery and love for generations. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Helen McCarthy is a writer and speaker on anime and manga. She’s been studying anime since 1981, writing over a dozen books, over a hundred articles and essays, and giving talks all over the world. Her talk on the Art History of Studio Ghibli has wowed audiences all over the UK for Seed Talks. Exploring Howl’s Moving Castle dives deep into the studio’s inspirations with new ideas and information for even the most dedicated Ghibli fan, but even a complete Ghibli beginner will enjoy this exploration of the film’s art, story, legacy and the people who made it. Testimonials from our guests ⭐ Seed Talks created a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, it was a really wonderful experience. Thank you Seed Talks for facilitating such a powerful and important platform. 100% recommend you check out a Seed Talk near you! - Anna F. ⭐ Amazing content and delivered in such interesting and captivating ways. The Clover Point Drifters | Oak Bay Recreation Centre - Upstairs Lounge
May 10, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Centre
The Clover Point Drifters are a bluegrass band with a repertoire that consists primarily of traditional bluegrass songs, with a sprinkling of country, folk, blues and pop melodies served up in the bluegrass style. Their songs feature close heartfelt duet and trio harmonies, backed by strong banjo, dobro and mandolin accompaniment. The band has been performing for over 16 years, but the members each have a decades-long love affair with bluegrass music ABOUT THE BAND: Mike Kraft (banjo, harmony vocals) is one of Victoria’s secrets that don’t involve underwear. Besides being one fine banjo player, he also plays guitar in a variety of country, rockabilly and blues bands. Basically, any band that wants a real musician tries to snag him. Mike endured painful back surgery in 2003, but now that his aura has been properly aligned, he has re-established his rapport with the universe, and he shares with us his humour and stock picks. He is a former member of The Chance Brothers. Larry Stevens (resophonic guitar, lead vocals) has a gift for singing the country song, good times and bad, love and loss, the past and even further past. For many years, he lived in Vancouver and played the dobro with several bands, including the New Nash Ramblers who were the BC Country Music Association Bluegrass Band of the Year. In 1999, he drifted over to Victoria, where his rich warm voice has become a welcoming and familiar sound. George Robinson (bass, lead vocals) has the longest pedigree in the band, having played bluegrass bass since 1977. By good luck and happenstance that year, he managed to obtain ownership of Duke Neilson’s bass (Duke played for many years with Don Messer and the Islanders, a Canadian musical institution if ever there was one). Being thus equipped, George spent the next 3 years on the road with the New Silver Tone Rangers, with only 2 weeks off. Talk about cutting your teeth. Thanks to the unforgiving march of time, he has now been playing this bass longer than Duke did. Other former bands include Every Day Street Band, Cedar Hill and Back At The Ranch. Dan Parker (mandolin, lead vocals) drifted west from Ontario following a successful attempt to attain a higher education. He is one of those annoying people who, if given some new musical instrument, will spend almost no time at all making it sound like they have played it for years. And then he’ll show you the tune he has just written for it. If that isn’t enough, he also built his own guitar. Dan’s spirited and inventive solos complement the plodding efficacy of the old farts. Alan Law (guitar, lead & harmony vocals) does most of the arranging and supplies the beverages for rehearsals. That makes him the band leader. He is strictly a rhythm guitarist (“I do not play any notes”), but his drive, passion and stamina are second to none. In a band of baritones, he enjoys the role of tenor singer, and he loves singing harmony more than almost anything you can imagine. Previous combos include playing with George in Back At The Ranch and with Mike in The Chance Brothers. www.cloverpointdrifters.com The Upstairs Lounge at Oak Bay Recreation Centre is an all ages licensed restaurant and bar, doors open at 6 pm for dinner service, the concert starts at 7:30 pm - Please note this is a LISTENING VENUE

We will then return indoors to start to plan out our concertina zines. Zines are small, self published booklets that can be about any topic of your choosing. You may wish to create a zine of observational sketches using the spectacular views, you might seek inspiration from sea themed folklore or you might want to document your favourite seabirds and sea life. The opportunities are endless and are directed by you. Materials provided will be a variety of mixed media (wet and dry) suitable paper and zine making materials. If you wish to bring any art materials of your own, you are welcome to do so. About Rosa: Hello, I’m Rosa. I’m a visual artist and illustrator from Aberdeen.
