THE WORKSHOP: These creative writing poetry workshops, led by Hannah Norris, will encourage you to see and hear poetry everywhere: shopping lists, WhatsApps, pub toilet graffiti and conversations overheard on public transport. Together, we will find inspiration by unlocking clues from the works of traditional and contemporary poets, as well as mining from our own experiences and surroundings. You will be warmly welcomed to this supportive community, whether it’s your first time writing poetry or you have been writing it for many years. The sessions will take place on the first Thursday of every month and each month will have a different theme and set of prompts, which you are welcome to interpret as loosely as you like - or ignore altogether, in favour of your own creative impulses. Freedom is key here! THE TUTOR: Hannah Norris (she/her) describes herself as an ‘obsessive diary writer’ who turns this material into poetry. She started writing poetry to help navigate her grief following a bereavement. Hannah also loves to write about the foul-mouthed women in her family and the more mundane parts of life, from batch cooking to soulless retail parks. Hannah’s poetry has been featured in Left Lion, JARG, Streetcake, Postscript, Moonflake Press, Black Cat Poetry Press and on BBC Radio Merseyside. Hannah enjoys writing poetry that rips up the rulebook around rhyme, stanzas and line breaks. Her favourite poet is Hera Lindsay Bird. THE DETAILS: This event will be taking place at Nottingham Central Library. It's a very friendly group who often head to the pub afterwards. No experience needed! Contact admin@nottinghamwritersstudio.co.uk if you have any questions. Information Source: Nottingham Writers' Studio | eventbrite

Opening Reception for Past as Prologue: A Historical Acknowledgment, Part II. You're invited to attend the opening of Past as Prologue: A Historical Acknowledgment, Part II. Conceived as a call and response between historical and contemporary art, Past As Prologue: A Historical Acknowledgment brings together politically potent historical works from the National Academy of Design’s collection with contemporary works whose practices critically engage with the past and prompt fresh perspectives on our art historical origins. Drawing from the Academy’s vast collection which spans nearly 200 years, Past as Prologue features both historical and contemporary works to explore themes from land to representation. Organized in two parts, the first section focuses on “Land and Territory” which include 19th century landscapes of grand tour expeditions and paintings by members of Hudson River school whose works expressed the fantasies of the U.S. as uninhabited terrain. Toggling between the 19th and 21st centuries, artworks in the exhibition represent colonialism and imperialism through sublime landscapes and institutional critique. Expanded ideas of landscape question extractive practices, westward expansion, with an emphasis on portraiture as a throughline in the National Academy’s collection. The second installment of Past as Prologue takes up U.S. identity in its myriad forms, engaging themes like abolitionist movements, labor, national identity, race and Indigeneity, protest and political action, and social fabric. The event will be held at 519 West 26th Street, Floor Two, New York, NY 10001. Participating Artists: Elia Alba, Emma Amos NA (1937-2020), Benny Andrews NA (1930-2006), Will Barnet NA (1911-2012), Louise Bourgeois NA (1911-2010), Paul Cadmus NA, (1904-1999), Henry Casselli NA, Sue Coe NA, Patricia Cronin NA, Njideka Akunyili Crosby NA, Melvin Edwards NA, Mitch Epstein NA, Camila Falquez, Rafael Ferrer NA, Coco Fusco, Charles Gaines NA, Harold Garcia V, Andrea Geyer, Jeffrey Gibson, Elana Herzog NA, G. Peter Jemison, Byron Kim NA, Joyce Kozloff NA, Jacob Lawrence NA (1917-2000), Luigi Lucioni NA (1900-1988), Clare Veronica Hope Leighton NA (1898-1989), James Luna (1950-2018), Shervone Neckles, Catherine Opie NA, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, Howardena Pindell NA, Lina Puerta, Robert Rauschenberg NA (1925-2008), Faith Ringgold NA (1930-2024), Alison Saar NA, Marion Sanford NA (1904-1987), Arthur Simms NA, Rose B. Simpson, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith NA, Betty Tompkins, Carrie Mae Weems NA, Peter Williams NA (1952-2021). Historical Acknowledgment: The National Academy of Design was initiated by artists and architects to fill a void in the American artistic landscape of the 19th century, but we recognize our history has excluded many communities and cultures whose lineages and practices must be included in this country’s art historical canon: indigenous peoples, people of color, queer and nonbinary individuals, and people with different abilities. We are committed to a process of dismantling the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism and white supremacy. We are excited to move forward and have conversations that reflect the important questions and issues of today. Past as Prologue: A Historical Acknowledgment, Part II will be on view from February 6 through April 26. Image: Peter Williams, Young Picasso and His African Mistress, 1997. Oil on canvas. Join Village Books and best-selling author Gene Openshaw in the Readings Gallery to celebrate Seattle-based author Michael N. McGregor's debut novel, The Last Grand Tour! Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Joe Newhouse has guided Americans through the mythic lands of western Europe. Now, with his marriage failing, he faces one last trip to Venice with a surly group and a beautiful woman who turn his final tour into a web of conflict, secrets, and kindled desire. In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews calls The Last Grand Tour A captivating exploration of the promise and burden of passionate love. Award-winning author Pete Duval says, Brutally honest, masterfully crafted, The Last Grand Tour is one hell of a read. Michael N. McGregor spent over a decade guiding Americans through Europe, both with Rick Steves and with his own company, Halcyon Tours. One of the many people he met in his travels was the poet Robert Lax, who became the subject of his first book, Pure Act. Pure Act was a finalist for a Washington State Book Award and named one of the top 10 books in American Studies for libraries by the Association of University Presses. A former professor of creative writing, McGregor has published stories and essays in a wide variety of journals and magazines, including Tin House, Orion, StoryQuarterly, Poets & Writers, and Image. He lives in Seattle, where he hosts the Cascadia Writers-in-Conversation series and runs the website WritingtheNorthwest.com. You'll find more about him and his writing at: michaelnmcgregor.com. Gene Openshaw is the best-selling author of numerous travel books and PBS TV shows with travel guru Rick Steves. Their latest book, Europe's Top 100 Masterpieces, highlights classic works of art. Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler is still going strong after three decades. Their guidebooks--to Paris, Rome, London, and more--are some of the best-selling guides in the English language. Gene and Rick's 1978 adventures On the Hippie Trail are chronicled in Rick's recently published journal of the trip. For television, Gene has co-authored the popular PBS documentaries The Story of Fascism and the ambitious multi-part series Art of Europe. Interviews with Gene can often be heard on NPR radio. As a composer, Gene has written an opera called Matter. Gene's latest book, Michelangelo at Midlife, takes the reader from Florence to Paris to Rome in search of Michelangelo's most notorious masterpiece. Kirkus Reviews calls it a delightful combination of art history and light drama... told with intelligence... conveyed with impressive emotional poignancy... an entertaining treat.
