Chinese Painting on Lanterns - A Workshop We're back at Duke street Market where we will teach you how to create your own Lantern and decorate it using Chinese Brush Painting. You will use materials such as Bamboo Brushes, Sumi Ink and Mineral Paints. Painting Lunar New Year themed topics onto your own hand crafted paper lantern. First of all we'll build our lanterns together and whilst they're waiting to dry our teacher and local artist Ula Fung will demonste some Chinese painting techniques. Before you start painting on your Lantern you will warm up by painting onto Rice paper. We will bring along a selection of references themed on the Lunar New Year! This workshop is suitable for beginners and up so if you haven't picked up a paint brush since school or you regularly paint in your own time, everybody is welcome to create together. China has long been a source of inspiration and fascination for European artists. In this study session, we will take a close look at Cooper Hewitt’s holdings of chinoiserie and export drawings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with a focus on works by Jean-Baptiste Pillement and George Chinnery. Pillement’s playful drawings of architecture, flora, and figures highlight the fantastic and romantic visions of China that populated the European imagination. In contrast to these fanciful representations, Chinnery’s sketchbook drawings—made during the artist’s travels to Macau—capture scenes and figures from daily life. In addition to these works, we will explore chinoiserie drawings and designs by various European artists, as well as examples of Chinese export gouaches.
