Life in Short: Micro Memoir Workshop | Auburn Public Theater Stage Right

Jan 31–Feb 2, 2025 (UTC-5)

Literary Arts
Memoir doesn't have to cover decades to tell a story. Sometimes a single moment, vividly depicted, illuminates a life. If you’ve wanted to write memoir but are overwhelmed at the immensity of the task—or you’re already writing but need a fresh approach—consider micro memoir. The smaller format can be freeing, allowing you to focus on an event that serves as a microcosm of the larger experience. In this weekend-long workshop you’ll gain techniques and tips to write tight, powerful micro memoirs—short narrative forms—and come away with a polished 100-word piece and a 200-word piece suitable for publication (with guidance on where to submit). In just one weekend, you'll learn how to vividly capture details of a unique life well-lived: your own. A book reviewer for Publishers Weekly, Linda's micro nonfiction has been published in the New York Times and in Tiny Love Stories: True Tales of Love in 100 Words or Less (Artisan Books, December 2020). Her writing advice has appeared in The Writer and Writer's Digest magazines. Linda has presented at writing conferences from the Chautauqua Writers' Festival to HippoCamp, the annual nonfiction conference of Hippocampus magazine. Her track record teaching micro memoir has yielded three Tiny Love Stories (published by the New York Times) written by three students in her classes. SCHEDULE Friday: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm Sunday: 10:00am - 12:00pm Information Source: Auburn Public Theater | eventbrite

I am so glad I was finally able to make it along to this class. I am so glad I did. It is one of the best, most dynamic, and safe and supported Meisner rooms I have ever been in. Skye runs things with such warmth and generosity. It's wonderful to see and be a part of. I really came out of my comfort zone and you made the space so safe (I find the term ‘safe space’ so pretentious but it actually rang true for once) and relaxed and it felt like I could truly experiment and play. Be ready to completely lose control and challenge yourself and your partner, but don’t worry with Skye’s guidance you’re completely safe. You’ll get to work with different partners and explore slightly different ways to approach Meisner. I especially liked applying it to a written text and seeing how it came alive. Skye’s practice focuses on two main aims: for her students to gain huge confidence and independence in Meisner’s work and crucially, a full understanding of how and where to apply it. In this class you will be going through all of the core elements of Meisner’s repetition exercise; from breaking down how it works, to why actors use it and how to apply this technique to scenes, monologues and personal character prep work, so you feel confident to go into the industry and make the most out of this introduction. This is a purely practical class, where you will learn through practising and honing these exercises. Meisner’s work is like a gym for an actor, it helps you to flex all of your acting muscles so that you are raring to go when jumping into a scene/monologue. Skye currently teaches at LAMDA, RADA, Arts Ed and various other top drama schools and training programs. Skye is also on the BA, MFA and Foundation course audition panels at LAMDA. Hello, My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local artist and qualified art and design teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for over 28 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this workshop to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further. My workshop is designed to be a relaxed friendly space where you can meet new people and have the opportunity to create, learn and have fun. Throughout the day I will teach you how to make a hare sculpture using traditional hand-building techniques. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the day. The only thing you need to bring is a packed lunch, an apron and wear old clothes if possible. There is FREE parking at the Walronds. Their carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. Here is a link to Shortlands Lane on Google Maps https://goo.gl/maps/kWveqzWFX3eh2uQi9 After the workshop, I will carefully take your sculpture home and fire it in my kiln. These sculptures are not glazed as the terracotta will age beautifully in your garden over time. Your sculpture will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the workshop from the Walronds. I will let you know the date and time once they are ready. NB: I am happy to store your work for 6 months from the collection date, after which time your work will be donated to charity. Please follow me on Instagram and Facebook to see photographs of work made in my previous workshops. LOST & FOUNDOften hidden away in the archives, oral history recordings offer eye-witness accounts of people and places in the past. We'll listen to some of this rich material - from collections held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive at the University of Leicester - as inspiration to creatively consider how memories connect us to places. All are welcome, whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out. This is an opportunity to explore the creative potential of our sound heritage, connect with other writers through a series of facilitated writing activities and share your work if you would like to. This workshop is led by Helen Foster as part of the British Library's Sharing Our Sounds initiative. Helen is currently artist in residence with the project, hosted by the University of Leicester Archives and Special Collections and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. She is a writer, researcher and therapeutic writing practitioner who writes fiction and experiments with poetry. Her latest co-authored publication, Arts For Health: Creative Writing, is out now with Emerald Press. Event details: Date: Saturday 01 February 2025Time: 10:30 -12:30Location: Leicester Central Library, Bishop Street, Leicester, LE1 6AASpaces are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot now.
