Tennent's Laughter Lounge HALLOWEEN SPECIAL | Tennents Byres Rd Glasgow

Oct 28, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Arts
Comedy
In conjunction with the Blood, Sweat & Fears podcast, we’re bringing a night of Halloween hilarity to Tennent’s Bar on Byres Road. Headlining the night is rapid-fire Irish comedian Ryan Cullen. If Milton Jones is the Obi wan Kenobi of one-liners then Ryan Cullen is Darth Vader. Not many comedians can write a gag that elicits a gasp, laughter, then cheers followed by applause from an audience, it’s all about delivery and Ryan delivers with an economy of words, an unapologetic style and surgical precision. Ryan was runner-up in Irish Comedian of the Year and has made appearances on BBC Scotland’s The Comedy Underground, BBC NI’S Late Licence as well as spots on RTE & MTV. He is also a head performer on the 'Facts' YouTube Channel, which boasts over 500 million views and 1.5 million subscribers. “One of my favourite comedians. Hilarious and so dark.” - Daniel Sloss Big laughs… this is extraordinary stuff.” - The Scotsman “He should be writing for Frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr!” - The Stand Comedy Club Opening the night will be the fantastic Kate Hammer. Anaemic, Canadian, and disgusting, Kate Hammer (BBC Short Stuff) has performed at Just for Laughs, opened for Karen Dunbar, and was a semi-finalist for LGBTQ Comedian of the Year and Funny Women 2022. A writer, performer, and all-round emotionally unavailable person, she is ready to be way too personal, wear high-waisted jeans, and make you laugh. “She’s incredible. I just want to hear more.” -Rachel Parris “She has great charisma and dynamism, both physical and verbal” - Chortle Also including shorter sets from Stuart Campbell, Mhairi Kinnaird, Jack Brookmyre, Matt MacDonald and Paddy Linton. **PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** • Doors to the bar open at 5pm, doors to the comedy room open at 7pm, the show starts at 7:30pm. • This is NOT a standing event. All audience members must be seated while the performance is underway, unless getting up to leave the room. • You may have to share a table. You may not be able to sit together if the remaining chairs available are spread out. If it is important to you to sit with people you know, we recommend arriving as early as possible. • If you are arranging on behalf of a large group of people, please make sure everyone is aware talking is not permitted during performances. Hen parties and stag dos, this is probably not the event for you. • Please don’t talk or heckle during the performances; it is very distracting for both the performer and other audience members. Some performers (usually the host) may invite audience interaction, but otherwise please let the comedians do the talking. Heckling does not ‘help the show’. Think of it like cinema rules: laughter, cheers, applause are all great, but talking or yelling out is not. And another cinema rule… • Please put your phone on silent. Photos are fine but please no video or flash photography. • These shows are for people aged 18 and over. You may be asked to show ID if you do not look of age. • Tennent’s Laughter Lounge does not necessarily agree or disagree with the opinions and viewpoints expressed by the comedians. Acts are booked based on their ability to make people laugh, beyond that we respect freedom of expression. If you disagree or are offended by what you hear, you are free to express this by not laughing, by leaving, or by respectfully raising your objections with the act after the show or via social media. You may not interrupt an on-going performance. • Exceptions to rules are at the discretion of Tennent’s Laughter Lounge. Audience members who repeatedly break these rules will be asked to leave. Filmscreening : Herzsprung by Helke Misselwitz | Goethe-Institut Glasgow

Oct 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Arts
Picture: DEFA-Stiftung Come join us for a special filmscreening of the feature film Herzsprung by the DEFA documentary filmer Helke Misselwitz. This in-person event will be held at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow. Don't miss this unique opportunity to enjoy a classic film in a cultural setting to celebrate the 35. anniversary of the fall of the wall. Herzsprung Germany 1992 | Director: Helke Misselwitz | Duration: 87 min | in German with English subtitles | Feature Film | FSK rating (Germany): 12 years. Herzsprung, a village in Brandenburg, just after reunification. Factory cook Johanna loses her job and soon after becomes a widow when her husband kills himself. The mother of two small children gets new energy from her friend Lisa, a hairdresser, and her feelings for an African-German who runs a snack bar at the edge of town. But while Johanna's father, a concentration camp survivor, enjoys a late-in-life new love, Johanna and her boyfriend become the target of young neo-Nazis… For her narrative debut, DEFA documentary filmmaker Helke Misselwitz joined with Thomas Wilkening to found one of the first private East German film production companies. Developed and shot against the background of xenophobic attacks in Rostock and Hoyerswerda in 1991/92, Herzsprung displayed a keen feel for the mood during unification's radical social upheavals, as well as a sense of historical consciousness. As one of very few East German contemporary films, it was – aesthetically, feminist, inter-cultural – completely in tune with its time. Consciously playing on ostalgia , it employed eastern European songs from Russian discos and references to motifs from old DEFA fairy tale films. Source: 74. Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin (Catalogue) 9 November 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. To mark this important anniversary, the Goethe-Institut is presenting a special film series with three selected films in October and November. These films, a documentary and two feature films from two decades, highlight various aspects of the fall of the Wall and its impact. In addition, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival has chosen ‘Bridges’ as its theme this year. We are delighted to be working with the festival to offer a series of events that explore and reflect on the fall of the Wall in a narrative way. All films will be shown in German with English subtitles on the big screen so that everyone, regardless of German language skills, has the opportunity to take part. The film screenings are free of charge and all interested parties are cordially invited. Come along and immerse yourself in the moving history of the fall of the Berlin Wall! Glasgow

Orchestra
When the veil between worlds grows thin and spooky creatures lurk in the fog-strewn autumn streets, it can mean only one thing: Halloween is nigh! And no place celebrates the dark part of the year quite like Scotland with its ghostly history and superstitious narratives. Thus may we present to you a guitarguitar Glasgow exclusive - a screening of the horror movie classic, 1922 Nosferatu with a live score performed on site! What is this all about? Have we got your full attention yet? Good because what you’re about to witness in the premises of our flagship guitar store will be a night to remember. On the very night of Halloween - or Samhainn as we call it here in Scotland - our Glasgow store will turn into a cinema, screening the original 1922 silent movie classic Nosferatu. To make it an experience out of this world, we have invited the highly acclaimed Gladstone’s Bag - an orchestral music group specialising in playing scores for silent films. Gladstone’s Bag will play a live score accompaniment to Nosferatu, using our phenomenal Yamaha piano as the key instrument of their soundtrack. With a musical score that could make the dead rise you’re guaranteed a once-in-a-lifetime Halloween party. Speaking of a party, we highly encourage you dear attendees to dress up - after all, ‘tis a night of guising and trick-or-treating. Fear not, dressing up is not mandatory. Oh did we mention this screening almost coincides with the upcoming launch of Nosferatu’s remake? We didn’t know that when we planned this. Feeling goosebumps yet?... The Details Our Nosferatu - a Symphony of Horror with live score performance will take place on Thursday the 31st October at guitarguitar Glasgow at 7:15 pm. This is a seated event and tickets are free but required in order to attend. We anticipate this to be a highly sought after event so hurry and get your tickets booked today to avoid disappointment!
