Midsummer Song: Book Launch and Discussion with Maria Sledmere | Advanced Research Centre (ARC), University of Glasgow
Oct 22, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Join us for a celebration of Midsummer Song (Hypercritique), a book by Maria Sledmere recently released through NoUP, an imprint of Tenement Press. Described by the publisher as ‘an autopoietic almanack of disambiguated ideas, a pale fire of a poem’ and ‘a spiralling work of scholarship’, this ambitious creative-critical work will be launched in conversation with Carl Lavery (Professor of Theatre and Performance) and Colin Herd (Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing). Expect a mix of reading, discussion and audience Q&A. The book is developed out of Sledmere’s work as a DFA candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, and was selected via open submission. Moving fluidly between lineated verse and essaying, Midsummer Song positions itself as a choose-your-own-adventure style guidebook for living in and against the anthropocene. Attending to climate emergency, the global pandemic and accelerations in technology, its lyrical ‘I’ feels through these issues as they reach every enclave of daily life, often threatening thought itself. This is a book ‘on the need for song as midsummer inches its way toward an axiomatic autumn’. There will be books for sale at the event, or you can preorder one here. More info about Midsummer Song (Hypercritique) can be found here. About the author and discussants:Maria Sledmere is an artist, editor, educator and writer based in Glasgow. She is the author of over twenty creative publications, including Cinders (Krupskaya, 2024), An Aura of Plasma Around the Sun (Hem Press, 2023), Cocoa & Nothing (with Colin Herd, SPAM Press, 2023), Visions & Feed (HVTN Press, 2022) and The Luna Erratum (Dostoyevsky Wannabe, 2021). With Rhian Williams, she co-edited the anthology the weird folds: everyday poems from the anthropocene (Dostoyevsky Wannabe, 2020). Sledmere lectures in English & Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde and is managing editor of SPAM Press. With Kevin Leomo, she is one half of Project Somnolence: a portable lab for exploring the sonic ecologies of sleep. Carl Lavery teaches theatre and performance at the University of Glasgow. He has written several books on ecology and performance, including his most recent text, An Idea for a Theatre Ecology (2025). He works closely with the artists Simon Whitehead and Lee Hassall. He is currently working on a project on performance as lyrical address, a blurring and rethinking of Aristotelian categories in the name of something non-dramatic, a ‘cosmic mimesis’ extraneous to action and narrative. Colin Herd is a poet and senior lecturer in Creative Writing at University of Glasgow. His books include Too Ok, Glovebox, Click & Collect, You Name It, Oberwilding - with S J Fowler, Cocoa & Nothing - with Maria Sledmere and Swamp Kiss. He has recently acted as a mentor for Queer Words 2, and presented his poetry at Association of Scottish Literature’s Queer Form Symposium. He has interests in poetries of ekphrasis, pop culture, performance, endurance, correspondence and anti-poetry. He has also edited or co-edited four anthologies of poetry: Glasgow Cities, Edwin Morgan and All Becomes Art (1&2). His work has been described by Dennis Cooper as “a treasure trove of razzle-dazzle stylings, superfine wit, charismatic discretion, and a vacuuming tenderness. Herd's gift for words is exquisite and adventurous and armed to the teeth, and these poems are its perfect measurements.” AccessibilityInformation on the Advanced Research Centre’s accessibility can be found on Accessable. We aim to ensure all people have equal access to our public events. Hand-Building in Clay: 2-Part Workshop This two-part hand-building workshop is perfect for both beginners and those with some experience in clay. Over two weeks (2 hours per session), you’ll learn essential techniques such as slab building and coil work, with the chance to create 1-2 unique pieces. Beginners will receive step-by-step guidance, while more experienced students can work on self-led projects with personalized support. With small class sizes (up to 8 people), you'll benefit from plenty of hands-on assistance. Week 1 (Beginners): You’ll create a coil pot and design a template for a slab pot. Week 2 (Beginners): You’ll refine the coil pot and assemble and finish the slab pot. At the end of the course, you’ll choose a glaze, and the instructor will fire and finish your work, ready for collection within two weeks. It’s a fantastic way to explore or refine your hand-building skills in a fun and supportive setting! Please bring a towel, apron, and wear clothes that you won't mind getting a little messy – clay washes off, but it can get on everything! This is a class is intended for adults age 16 +.

'In the palm of a spider's hand' book launch: Glasgow | Collective Architecture
Oct 24, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Join ‘In the palm of a spider’s hand’ author Gerald King, in conversation with Editor and Publisher Rachel Arthur, to launch this vital new poetry collection from an extraordinary talent. A groundbreaking work that challenges the very fabric of what we think we know about dementia, creative thinking and the power of words, Gerald King’s In the palm of a spider’s hand is a radical act of defiance against the conventions of both literature and life. Diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s at 55, King was told he’d never work with words again. Today, his debut poetry collection not only defies that prognosis but also pushes back against the suffocating stereotypes perpetuated by mainstream media. A former Technical Architect, King was immediately retired from work upon diagnosis. Join us at Collective Architecture for a poignant event including insights from behind the scenes of this vital debut collection, meet the author signings, readings and refreshments.

Matilda In The Middle by Katy Lironi - Glasgow Book Launch | Mono
Oct 24, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
The event will be hosted by leading cultural commentator, Alistair Braidwood. This is an opportunity to listen to excerpts from Matilda In The Middle read by the memoir's author, Katy Lironi. Also featuring an acoustic musical set from Katy (The Fizzbombs, The Secret Goldfish) and Douglas MacIntyre (Article 58, The Secret Goldfish, Sexual Objects, Port Sulphur). There will also be an opportunity to buy a copy or copies of Katy's memoir, signed by the author.
Katy’s story is first and foremost, a musical, family memoir. Both parents come with their own lives immersed in the Scottish music scene of the 1980s – Katy enmeshed in everything that was Edinburgh-based C86 indie pop, while her bandmate and future husband, Douglas MacIntyre, embraced the Scottish post-punk era. At the turn of the century, just as the the couple’s musical projects are in the midst of a creative overload, children start to appear at an alarming rate. Six years and five children later, SandFest was born – raising thousands of pounds over the next decade for Down’s Syndrome charities. A family. Functioning. JUST – music is always there to save the day. At the centre of this family saga is the indomitable spirit of middle child, Matilda, whose Down Syndrome is, in equal parts, challenging and an amazing gift within the family dynamic! In part, with the raw and unflinching honesty Katy tells of her encounters with the medical profession and educational authorities, which can be described as alternating between difficult and wonderful. At heart, this is the story of a family’s love of music and how it has provided purpose, forged relationships and created harmony in every aspect of their lives … with Matilda in the middle. TESTIMONIES “A story with a huge beating heart at its core and music riding through every page like a swashbuckling heroine!” – Mel Giedroyc “A heartening, warm and bright-eyed book about family, music, embracing chaos, and the quiet magic of everyday wonder. ” – Nicola Meighan
