Hugo, a producer residing in Berlin, came across a captivating video of Thom in a Facebook group while searching for new artists to collaborate with. This initial encounter sparked a natural chemistry that set the stage for a remarkable collaboration, resulting in the creation of an entire album. Reflecting on their partnership, Thom reveals, "We never imagined that we would end up making a complete album together." The revelation came after Hugo sent the first demo production, igniting a realization that they had stumbled upon something truly unique. Hugo was instantly drawn to Thom's distinctive voice and songwriting, admitting, "These songs resonated with me and inspired countless ideas for the production." The production process itself was a refreshing departure for both artists. Thom's approach involved recording a one-take version of each song using just two microphones – one for vocals and the other for the guitar, whether it be an acoustic or electric. Thom's dedication to this method shone through, with Hugo recalling, "For 'Don't Know If I'm Walking,' Thom recorded almost forty five-minute one-takes before sending them to me!" The result was two raw tracks, capturing the true essence of the performance. For the production, Hugo wanted to maintain the organic feel of Thom's one-take recordings. He played the drums, bass, and most of the guitars himself in one take, only adding ad libs, synthesizers, and sound effects as necessary. This commitment to authenticity was rooted in Thom's background as a street musician, where he honed his craft by playing his own compositions daily. The upcoming debut album from Thom and the Wolves, set to be released in March, promises to be a captivating musical journey.
