Kafka//Auswege is a captivating theater project that pays tribute to the renowned author Franz Kafka on the occasion of his 140th birthday and centenary death anniversary. Set in the historic Brotfabrik venue in Berlin, this project creates a unique and offbeat world inspired by Kafka's narratives, populated by familiar characters such as animal-human hybrids, solitary employees, and uncompromising fathers. The script is derived from a collage of three Kafka texts: "Report to an Academy," framed by motifs from "A Country Doctor" and a scene based on the lesser-known fragment "The Stork in the Room" ("The Flight School"). Rather than following the rational consciousness, the play adheres to dream logic. It explores the experiences of a country doctor who makes a horrifying yet captivating discovery in a frozen and inhospitable landscape, a former ape-turned-variety artist recounting his transformation into a human, and a small employee and private scholar who uncovers a strange world in his attic. With elements of film, circus, rock, punk music, and even Chinese Qigong, "Auswege" not only transcends temporal and cultural boundaries but also delves into the reasons behind the enduring relevance of Kafka's texts. Directed by Dirk Steinmann, the production features performances by Jan Chmilewski, Ingolf Müller-Beck, and Seawon Park, with makeup by Marlen Siegwart.
