Reeds - Live Show & Zine Launch | Spadina Avenue & Bloor Street West

Sep 28, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Toronto
Arts
...there's so much that I want to tell you, So much more that I want to hear You are invited for an intimate evening of music and poetry and the launch of Zico's first poetry zine, Reeds. This cozy little gathering at a friend's loft will feature live music with stripped-back versions of his songs, and selected readings from the zine. Reeds is a collection of poems written by Zico. It draws (in many places very unsubtly) from the very disparate influences that shape our consciousness as a generation and collective, and Zico's as an individual. At the heart of it, the zine also prominently features pieces about the defining cause of our time, our compass, Palestine. The collection focuses on diasporic experience and calls us in to find comfort and consolation in sharing them with each other. During the past year, Zico has performed many of these pieces featured in the zine at community events, rallies and fundraisers for Palestine or other causes. Some of these have even evolved into songs and will be performed at this zine launch show. The zine was beautifully designed by the incredible Mostafa Zohdy and it will be available at a discounted price at launch for those attending. Show proceeds will go to support mutual aid for families in Gaza. There's an option to top up your ticket purchase with a donation, please give as much as you can! There will be more details shared at the show about the families that will benefit from the donations. Come and join us in community to be part of this special night, to hopefully find some solace in the art and in each other. Exact location will be sent to you upon ticket purchase. It is a cozy little set up in a friend's loft so please feel free to bring along a cushion to sit on as chair/couch seating is limited. Information Source: Zico | eventbrite

THE PARADISE THEATRE AND WEIRD ALICE PRESENT- EVIL WOMEN: a monthly screening series devoted to the femme fatales we desire and dread in our wildest dreams and worst nightmares! Join us on the last Sunday of the month for some unholy flicks- curated and presented by Weird Alice at the Paradise Theatre. SHE ALWAYS GETS THE PART. Evil Women is getting down right demented this September with a special presentation of Takashi Miike's 1999 classic AUDITION. “Along with PSYCHO, AUDITION is one of the great gearshift movies, starting out as one thing and then transitioning on a dime into something else entirely.” -- Scott Tobais, AV Club One of the most infamous, impactful, and gut-wrenching Japanese horror films ever made returns to the big screen! Recent widower (and movie producer) Shigeharu is looking for a new wife. But instead of going the usual route, he decides to hold “auditions” for a movie that doesn’t exist. Shigeharu quickly becomes enchanted with Asami, a spooky twenty-something who is responsive to his charms. But things aren’t what they seem. AUDITION was the turn-of-the-millenium flash point that signaled the talent of Takashi Miike (ICHI THE KILLER). With this movie, Miike delivers a nerve-shredding exploration of male fears and the stereotype of submissive Japanese women. Shocking audiences worldwide with its white-knuckle finale and ingenious slow-burn build-up, AUDITION was responsible for creating a fresh new wave of Asian horror. And we’re eternally grateful.
