Running
Inviting all of Queer Run Club (QRC), lurkers, and supporters to a party at The Drake Hotel on Sun Sept 22, 3pm to 6pm. What are we celebrating? Celebrate our 3-year anniversary of QRC's existence in the queer community building and fostering queer joy! 3 years running QRC is no small feat. Remember the days when there were no queer sport clubs around?! It’s been a life changing journey creating QRC, as I am sure it has impacted a lot of you as well. Collectively, we (MK, Aislin) are excited to finally throw a party to bring everyone to celebrate the connections and friendships at QRC outside of our usual Saturday routine. What's the vibe? We're excited to hang out with you all in non-running clothes. We encourage you to show up in an outfit that makes you feel good (😉) especially when you don’t have to run. Or run2party, whatever works for you. There may be some giveaways and YOU BET there will be a chaotic group “photo” of some sort, as per usual lol. What you get with your ticket? Tickets are $15* and each entry will include snacks and chance to win raffle prizes. Alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at the bar. *If we could host the event for free, we would have. We received a gift card from Pride and Remembrance Run a couple of years ago for the Drake Hotel but unfortunately after applying our gift card, we still need to cover costs for the minimum spend of the event. All of the ticket price go towards balance of renting the space, snacks, and small fee to help manage the tickets and attendees. Why 3pm to 6pm? Yes, this is an afternoon party! Is anyone else excited??! Honestly 3pm to 6pm means you can get your Sunday errands done but not too late before the Sunday scaries kick in. Final Words HUGE THANK YOU TO AISLIN AND DENISE for leading the planning of this party. They put their smart minds together to finalize the details. It would warm our hearts to see all of us come together 😌 Hope to see you there, MK and Aislin More questions? See FAQ below. Information Source: Queer Run Club (QRC) | eventbrite

Join us for the Toronto Launch of The Sleeping Giant (Tundra) the fourth book in David Robertson's Misewa Saga! In conversation with Stephanie Sinclair. ABOUT THE SLEEPING GIANT: Eli and Morgan embark on a dangerous mission to rescue kidnapped animal beings in the fifth adventure in the award-winning, Narnia-inspired Indigenous middle-grade fantasy series, now available in paperback. Eli, Morgan and Emily embark on their most dangerous mission yet, to save the kidnapped animal beings of Ministik. But before they can reach the heavily guarded Land of the Sleeping Giant, Eli must rally more help, not just from old friends, but from surprising new allies. And he must rely on a new way to travel: on the back of the leader of the Bird Warriors himself, Pip. Together they will journey across the North Country, on a mission to reconnect the Bird Warriors, as well as confront old enemies. But even as he must fight for his life – and the lives of his friends and new family – Eli must also come to terms with his newfound knowledge: What does it mean that he is only part human? ABOUT THE MISEWA SAGA: The Misewa Saga series reflects stories of the sky and the constellations held within its great canvas. The word misewa is Cree for all that is — elders say that what is above is mirrored below, and this is the connection we have with misewa. ABOUT DAVID A. ROBERTSON: David A. Robertson is the author of numerous books for young readers, including Governor General's Literary Award winners On the Trapline and When We Were Alone. The Barren Grounds, the first book in the middle-grade Misewa Saga series, was shortlisted for many awards, including the Governor General's Award, the TD Award for Children's Literature, and the Ontario Library Association's Silver Birch Award. It received a starred review from Kirkus and was a Kirkus, NPR, and Quill & Quire best middle-grade book of 2020, as well as a USBBY and Texas Lone Star selection. The Great Bear, the second book in the series, was also shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association's Silver Birch Award. A sought-after speaker and educator, and winner of the Writers' Union of Canada's Freedom to Read Award, Dave is a member of Norway House Cree Nation and currently lives in Winnipeg. ABOUT STEPHANIE SINCLAIR: Stephanie Sinclair is Publisher of McClelland & Stewart. She is a Cree, Ojibwe, and German/Jewish settler. She has worked for more than twenty years in the performing and creative arts, and from 2012-2022 in literary management. She began that work at Transatlantic Agency in 2012, where she rose through the ranks to senior agent, representing literary fiction and non-fiction with a focus on Indigenous creators and political engagement, and additionally helped manage translation rights programs for Page Two Books and Drawn & Quarterly. Her authors were acknowledged by virtually every awards jury in the country, including the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Governor General’s Award, the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction, the LAMBDA Awards, the Toronto Book Award, and many others. In 2020, Stephanie joined CookeMcDermid Literary Management, and found even more success—becoming the #1 ranked agent in the country in both fiction and non-fiction, according to Publisher’s Marketplace. Through it all, she has been a fierce advocate and activist, serving as a mentor and curator, and organizing publishing events to challenge colonial practices in publishing and to advance the work of reconciliation. QUEER CINEMA CLUB presents THE SKIN I LIVE IN | Paradise Theatre

Toronto

Theater
Every month at the Paradise Theatre, curator and host Peter Knegt is offering queers (and anyone who loves them) a classic queer film, special guests and performers, and some good old fashioned drinks and conversation in the Paradise’s stunning lobby bar. Each film is paired with a different local queer artist, who will design an original poster for the screening. On September 25th, we celebrate one of (if not the) greatest queer filmmakers of all-time: Pedro Almodóvar! The living legend — who is debuting his first English-language feature The Room Next Door earlier in the month — will be turning 75 on that date, and Queer Cinema Club will lead the Toronto celebration of that milestone by screening one of his many masterpieces, 2011’s The Skin I Live In. Described by Almodóvar himself as a horror story without screams or frights,” The Skin I Live In follows skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas, serving), who is trying to develop a new skin that could save the lives of burn victims. After a decade of work, he has finally created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), who is held prisoner against her will in the doctor's mansion. A melodramatic thriller that only Almodóvar could pull off, The Skin I Live In’s themes of memory, degradation, grief and survival feel like exactly what the filmmaker might want us to ponder at his own birthday party. We’ll also have a pre-show featuring a Almodóvarian-inspired performance from one of our other all time favourites, Gay Jesus. And we invite everyone who joins us to please come dressed inspired by Pedro. That could mean a general vibe or a specific film, whatever suits you best. We’ll have a few great prizes for the most impressive among you! Get your tickets, and thank you so much to Doug Rodas for creating this perfect poster, which will be for sale at the screening. See you soon, queers! (Courtesy of Mongrel Media) Wednesday, September 25th, 8 PM/7:30 PM Doors General Admission $15.00 + HST/eventbrite fees Door tickets are available for purchase on the day of screening. Award-winning environmentalists Drs. David Suzuki and Tara Cullis explore this profound idea through a poetic and playful dialogue on stage, alongside actors Miriam Fernandes and Jeff Irving. In this thought-provoking performance, David and Tara share powerful insights and captivating stories, drawing from a lifetime of environmental activism and their 50-year partnership. Through honest reflection and lively conversation, they invite us to consider how the love they share for each other and the Earth can inspire us to make a difference. Crazy Talk is an eclectic mix of 12 new songs covering genres from folk, jazz and folk-rock to world music. Howard is excited to be joined by his full band, consisting of Tony Quarrington (guitar), Laura Fernandez (vocal), Bob Cohen (bass) and Ambrose Pottie (drums). Howard and band will be joined by some of Toronto’s finest musicians, all of whom also appear on the album: Jacob Gorzhaltsan on tenor sax, clarinet, and flute; Shelley Coopersmith on violin; and Ed Roth on accordion and keyboard. About the artistIn addition to the release of his latest album this September, Howard Gladstone is also publishing a book of his collected lyrics, titled Timepieces. Veteran Canadian songwriter James Gordon has called the work a “remarkably compelling collection.” Howard is continuing with his monthly residency at the city’s Tranzac Club, where he is accompanied by regular band members (Tony Quarrington, Laura Fernandez, Bob Cohen, Ambrose Pottie). Previously, Howard co-founded and produced the not-for-profit Toronto City Roots Festival from 2004 to 2010. Howard recovered from a life-changing spinal cord injury in 2014 and released the album Hourglass, inspired by his healing journey, in 2017. In recovery, Howard found new strength, resolve and strength in music and understood more deeply its healing power. His followup album The Promise was recorded and released during the pandemic lockdown, with musicians working remotely. Howard continues to write, record, perform and occasionally guest host Corby’s Orbit radio show. Back in university days, Howard was journalist, and his interview with Robbie Robertson was republished in Rolling Stone magazine. Howard and Laura Fernandez formed the boutique record label Sonic Peach Music. www.howardgladstone.com | www.sonicpeachmusic.com If you heard this music in a crowded room, you'd suspect it was a lost gem from another time. – Greg Quill, Toronto Star Information Source: The Dakota Tavern | eventbrite
