Block Weaving Workshop with Santa Simule | Art Studio Amsterdam - NDSM

Amsterdam
Arts
Fine Art
This workshop is all hands-on experience to gain knowledge and confidence to block weave independently. We will create everything from scratch; starting with your own blocks, design and finally your own bookmark. No prior experience in handicrafts is necessary. During this workshop, you will be able to complete 1-2 bookmarks and will have a tool kit to use for your personal projects at home. Latvian culture: Latvian culture is rich with handicrafts. It shapes the foundation of their national identity. People are proud of their deep-rooted traditions and connection to nature. Today the land and inherited knowledge are highly respected and appreciated, too. Traditional patterns and symbols are used for empowerment and protection in interior and fashion. Handcrafting is a fun activity, but it's also a ritual to connect to nature, ancestors and creative energy. About the artist: SantaSimulecomes from a culture where handicrafts such as embroidery, knitting, sewing, and weaving were mastered every day. Many of these techniques were also taught at school. Her grandmother was a Queen of knitting. Watching her Santa's admiration towards the hand-made, self-made craft grew stronger day by day. Art has been by Santa's side since she was a little girl. After receiving a diploma from a local art school in applied and fine arts, she continued at the Baltic International Institute in Riga, where she studied advertisement design. One year in Athens, Greece as an exchange student. Soon after graduation, she realized computers were not her passion. She embarked on a self-discovery journey that led her to explore many different practices—both artistic and self-growth. While on this path, she received a diploma in arts and crafts from an art institute in New Delhi, India, and fell in love with creating with hands again. Her attention was mostly on mozaïek, quilling, hand sewing, paper mache and intuitive paintings. Today, with art still by her side, Santa delves deeper into the healing properties of creative expression. She continues practicing different art forms and facilitates dot painting workshops and clothing repair workshops. Who can attend? Everyone is welcome to the tours. However, the content of the chosen exhibition/topic may not be suitable for children up to a certain age. It is advised to discuss this with the curator beforehand. You will be in a group with max. 14 people. Time frame: 15 mins: entrance and meeting 30 mins: introduction 2 hours: guided hands-on experience 15 mins: conclusion and last remarks It’s also possible to organise private in-group art tours and team activities at your favourite museums and exhibitions on your desired date & time. Nr.51 Julian Williams | Let’s Get Personal 30 October 2024 19:30 Lange Adem | De Lange Adem

Oct 30, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Amsterdam
Arts
Design
Let’s Get Personal - Drawing design inspiration from experiences, conversations, and unseen influences. Julian Williams was recruited as meme-magician to lead the Democrats’ opposition campaign against Donald Trump. Next to his bold propaganda statements, he also creates type driven work, that range from minimalist to experimental futurist aesthetics. But that is far from all that Julian has to offer, his portfolio and instagram feed is full of surprising identities, that bring up the question, where does the personal end and branding start? A division that seems to blur increasingly these days, and in the case of Julian, this friction is his main source of inspiration. — Julian Williams is an American-German graphic designer who has lived and worked in the Netherlands for 8 years. He has a varied body of work, linked by bold, impactful statements and graphics. He values maintaining a steady personal design practice, inspired by his political activism, subcultures he finds himself a part of, and his relationships with people and the world. This has led him to professional opportunities in the fashion, design, and political world, including designing for Nike, &Walsh, and proudly, a role as a lead designer on Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign for President of the United States. His greatest dream is to make good things with good people. — Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to maintain a regular personal design practice. I use the word “fortunate,” because I realise that this is not the case for all creatives. Professional work often consumes our creative energy, and it can be difficult to become inspired to create work just for the sake of creating. Many older creatives have told me that I won’t always have the energy to make personal work. These conversations have stuck with me, and led me to be very conscious in the way I gather inspiration, inject my personal life into the designs I create, and reflect this in my professional life. By sharing the ways I create this work, I hope other creatives can be more conscious about becoming inspired. Take snippets from conversations. Laugh at a stupid sentence your mate said. Write down something clever you saw on a street sign. Be enraged by the news. Take pictures of pretty things and ugly things. React, and allow your initial emotions to be your inspiration. — Hosted at: De Lange Adem Ruyschstraat 295, 1091 DX Amsterdam — Supported by: Retype Foundry & PICTORIGHT Fonds Information Source: letterspace.amsterdam | eventbrite
