Chopin in the Chambers with Andrew Wilde | Oyez Arts, Altrincham Town Hall
Nov 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Street
A rare opportunity to hear one of the UK's finest pianists in a truly intimate setting. Join Andrew as he takes us on a marvellous musical journey with Chopin and others in Altrincham Town Hall for the very first time, performing through The North West Trust Outreach Programme using their Yamaha keyboard. Described by Daniel Barenboim as a major musical and pianistic talent Wilde’s Manchester recitals attracted capacity houses and wonderful reviews: “... this is the stuff of which pianistic legends are made” noted the Manchester Evening News Wilde was the first British pianist to give a full recital at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and has since returned there many times to play cornerstones of the piano repertoire including a highly acclaimed Chopin programme which was described by The Guardian as “one of the best piano recitals I have ever heard”. See Andrews full biography below. BIOGRAPHYandrewWilde piano“...the performance took wing in a state of something approaching ecstasy...” commented The Times following Andrew Wilde’s Haydn / Chopin recital at the Wigmore Hall and of a programme of works by Mozart and Schubert The Guardian stated, “Every texture was beautifully calculated, every gradation gauged with extraordinary care and restraint, and he was able to make every lovingly turned detail seem inevitable producing a performance of truly refined musicianship.” A recipient of top prizes at many international piano competitions including the Naumburg (New York), Pozzoli (Seregno), Kapell (Maryland), Dino Ciano (Milan) and World Competition (London), he studied at Manchester’s Chetham’s School of Music and Royal Northern College of Music with Ryszard Bakst. Wilde made his London début at the Royal Festival Hall in 1986 with the London Philharmonic, since when he has appeared as soloist with most of the major London and regional orchestras. His US début followed including with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC, and the Dallas Symphony, whilst his US recital was enthusiastically received: “Anyone aware of the best of English pianism from Myra Hess and Solomon to Clifford Curzon and John Ogdon will recognize the sterling traits these artists possessed when they crop up in a younger compatriot such as Andrew Wilde.” His discography includes CDs of Beethoven (BMG) and Haydn Sonatas (Collins Classics) as well as Chopin (Polskie Nagrania) and live broadcasts and studio recitals for radio stations around the world such as the BBC, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Polish Radio, Hungarian Radio and Italian Radio. His Queen Elizabeth Hall recital début at the South Bank Centre in London held a capacity audience in rapt attention, and of his German début recital the Rheinische Post noted: “The Brit Andrew Wilde is an absolutely convincing pianist who can draw the public with his playing into his spell of magic.” Single composer programmes at the Wigmore Hall, of Beethoven Sonatas and Haydn Sonatas and Variations, have been outstanding successes and his Chopin recital at the Queen Elizabeth Hall took him to the heights of critical acclaim when The Independent wrote, “The qualities of Andrew Wilde have been compared to Myra Hess and Solomon. His QEH recital on Wednesday made apparent why.” Described by Daniel Barenboim as a major musical and pianistic talent Wilde’s Manchester recitals have attracted capacity houses and wonderful reviews: “... this is the stuff of which pianistic legends are made” noted the Manchester Evening News having previously written “Not since Charles Halle in the 1850s has Manchester had a virtuoso pianist in residence with a love of chamber music as well as solo appearances” in connection with complete cycles of the Mozart and Beethoven Violin Sonatas with the great Hungarian violinist Vilmos Szabadi. Wilde was the first British pianist to give a full recital at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and has since returned there many times to play cornerstones of the piano repertoire including a highly acclaimed Chopin programme which was described by The Guardian as “one of the best piano recitals I have ever heard”.

Coffee Morning :: Meet the Artist :: Michael Craik | &Gallery
Nov 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Street
The space in between is a place that often passes unnoticed, a zone of stillness, offering an opportunity to recalibrate before ones attention is redrawn. Such spaces are the building blocks of Michael Craik’s practice. For ten years he has worked from a coastal studio in Fife overlooking the Firth of Forth estuary, methodically creating his minimal paintings. Bordering this expansive body of ever-changing water and light, subconscious associations result in intuitive decisions that inform the colour and design for each painting. From the first idea to the final layer of paint, temporal spaces fill the gaps created by a repetitive process of brushing, pouring, sanding and waiting. During such intervals, new directions materialise, leading to alterations in hue, saturation and tone. At a basic level Craik is painting space. Craik’s pared-back artworks do not offer the viewer a subject or direction. Instead, his subtly constructed chromatic fields offer tranquil vistas, where the onlooker is invited to pause and reflect. Craik’s exhibition The Space In Between will also present a series of small scale works that recently came to fruition. The idea for this new body of work was conceived in 2016 when he presented a solo exhibition in Kyoto. These sculptural, wall-based artworks are constructed with sustainably-sourced, native timbers combined with painted surfaces and resin. Each work constitutes a reimagined fragment of an encounter with the traditional architecture and gardens of Japan. Join us in the gallery to hear more about the exhibition over a coffee with Michael. The event is informal, so feel free to drop in anytime between 11am and 1pm to chat to Michael and view the work. The event is free however booking is essential.

As a game designer, she focuses on rethinking traditional video games formats and mechanics and she's experimenting with ways to queer the medium and its narratives. This includes not only creating queer protagonists and exploring gender performativity, but also rethinking the very nature of how games are played by creating DIY controllers to challenge traditional mechanics and creating 'anti-games', i.e. games with goalless and games with emotions and atmosphere as a primary focus. Her dedication to the gaming community extends beyond her own work, as she is the founder of Melanin Power Up that just launched, a community for LGBTQIA+ people of colour focused on learning accessible game design, supported by UK Black Pride and NYX Professional Make-Up. Meisner with Skye: Drop in Meisner Technique Workshop | Old Diorama Arts Centre
Nov 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Street
I am so glad I was finally able to make it along to this class. I am so glad I did. It is one of the best, most dynamic, and safe and supported Meisner rooms I have ever been in. Skye runs things with such warmth and generosity. It's wonderful to see and be a part of. I really came out of my comfort zone and you made the space so safe (I find the term ‘safe space’ so pretentious but it actually rang true for once) and relaxed and it felt like I could truly experiment and play. Be ready to completely lose control and challenge yourself and your partner, but don’t worry with Skye’s guidance you’re completely safe. You’ll get to work with different partners and explore slightly different ways to approach Meisner. I especially liked applying it to a written text and seeing how it came alive. Skye’s practice focuses on two main aims: for her students to gain huge confidence and independence in Meisner’s work and crucially, a full understanding of how and where to apply it. In this class you will be going through all of the core elements of Meisner’s repetition exercise; from breaking down how it works, to why actors use it and how to apply this technique to scenes, monologues and personal character prep work, so you feel confident to go into the industry and make the most out of this introduction. This is a purely practical class, where you will learn through practising and honing these exercises. Meisner’s work is like a gym for an actor, it helps you to flex all of your acting muscles so that you are raring to go when jumping into a scene/monologue. Skye currently teaches at LAMDA, RADA, Arts Ed and various other top drama schools and training programs. Skye is also on the BA, MFA and Foundation course audition panels at LAMDA.
