CONCERT: Flamenco Meets Maqam | St John the Baptist Church, Hoxton
Nov 10, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Street
Synopsis: Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde and Baha Yektin alongside Lourdes Fernandez and Demi Garcia Sabat merge cultures, as East meets West in a harmonious collusion. Their combination of Spanish guitar, Arabic oud and foot work does not come as a surprise. Arabs brought their music to Spain, where it contributed to what we know today as Flamenco. Together, they present new musical ideas based on Middle Eastern and Flamenco music, with pieces, musical visions, that include Maqams, Andalusian harmonies and rhythms of the Middle East - from Babylon and Ancient Spain, to the present rhythms. Age: Suitable for all ages Running Time:90 mins, with an interval Company: Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde Website:https://www.ignaciolusardimonteverde.co.uk/ Instagram: @ignacio_lusardi_monteverde Facebook: Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde Flamenco Writer: Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde Directors: Lourdes Fernandez & Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde Actors: Baha Yektin, Demi Garcia Sabat, Lourdes Fernandez & Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde Technical team: Ayden Yoo About Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde: Born and raised in Buenos Aires, into an Argentinian/Italian family, Ignacio started playing the guitar aged six. Inspired by his cultural surroundings, he played with his siblings as a family pastime, learning Argentinian folk songs and tango music. His passion for flamenco started, aged nine, when he discovered the works of the Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. His desire to pursue the flamenco genre eventually took him to London in 2013, where he became musically connected with Spain and the rest of the world. Ignacio is now an acclaimed London-based flamenco guitarist, producer and recording engineer. He graduated as a choir master at Buenos Aires Conservatoire in 2013, and has since collaborated with several performers including Ahmed Mukhtar, Baluji Shrivastav OBE and Eduardo Niebla. He has featured in live appearances at BBC Radio 3, London Festival of Baroque Music, Indian National Theatre and the Iraq Babylon Great Theatre, amongst others. In 2019, he was awarded the LATIN UK AWARDS for Musician of the Year and, in 2020, was assigned as a member of the Guild of Musicians & Singers. This same year he was awarded by the North & Midlands School of Music with an Honorary Fellowship, and, in 2021, with the honorary degree of Doctor of the University by JH Pestalozzi University. This was for his outstanding contribution to world music, both as performer and audio engineer. Ignacio has produced an extensive array of recordings, including multiple albums at the iconic Abbey Roads Studios, in collaboration with the British Museum, Royal College of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has previously worked with the Latin American Baroque Festival of Buenos Aires and other festivals such as Ketevan World Sacred Music Festival (India) and London Strings Festival (UK). Horror and Folklore: A Literary Lecture with André Alexis | Toronto Public Library - Toronto Reference Library
Nov 11, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED

Folktales are stories we use to teach children – and remind ourselves – of crucial things: family closeness, the way words fool you and the ways in which death enters the world. Are there deeper purposes to horror stories? Do they teach us about the land? If so, what do we do, as immigrants, with our folktales? Do they still have purpose, removed from the places where they originate? How are we connected to the sometimes terrifying stories we tell our children, the ones that haunt us as adults. André Alexis is Toronto Reference Library's Writer In Residence for fall 2024, with a focus on horror and literature of dread. André is an author of novels, short stories, and plays. His 2015 novel, Fifteen Dogs, won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Canada Reads, and the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Drop-in, no registration or ticket required. Beeton Hall (Main Floor) 6:30-7:30PM

A Modern Female Journey through the Odyssey - Laura Coffey, at Heffers | Heffers Bookshop
Nov 13, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Street
Laura Coffey is happiest in motion. She's newly addicted to cold-water swimming, has an old addiction to adventure, and writes about the wild beauty of the palces she visits and the peoples he meets as she roams through the world. Her debut book, Enchanted Islands - Travels through Myth and Magic, Love and Loss is the story of her journey around the islands of the Mediterranean searching for the real life inspiration behind the fantastical lands of the Odyssey, and combines travel and nature writing with memoir, and a twist of mythology. A lyrical odyssey about love, loss and Greek myth, Enchanted Islands is a memoir that blends together Laura's experiences navigating heartbreak and grief with her quest to map the real-life islands that inspired the wanderings of Homer's epic hero, Odysseus. It's accessible, not remotely academic, and has been endorsed by Stephen Fry, who described it as: 'A magical and hugely captivating journey - filled with such beauty, wonder and surprise. A simply marvellous read, hugely recommended'. Fluidly moving between the warm, confessional tone of Dolly Alderton and the insightful meditations on literature, myth and storytelling found in the writings of Octavia Bright or Madeleine Miller, this is a beautiful story of love and heartbreak, travel and adventure.
