HELIOTROPIA (Manahil Bandukwala) & DADDY (Jake Byrne) | Another Story Bookshop
Oct 4, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Toronto
Join us for the double launch of Heliotropia (Brick) by Manahil Bandukwala, and DADDY (Brick) by Jake Byrne! ABOUT HELIOTROPIA: Manahil Bandukwala's second collection of poems is a meditation on love during times of social and political upheaval. As a sunflower's growth reaches toward the sun, so, she suggests, is a lover's growth compelled by the gravitational pull and soul-light of their beloved. Many of these poems are in conversation with other poets and artists, creating a lineage of call and response. Against a backdrop of terrestrial crisis, come, spend your precious minutes in love's Heliotropia, where we are magnetized by the unfathomable dark matter of another person, and know ourselves as celestial bodies flowering in spacetime, together. ABOUT MANAHIL BANDUKWALA: Manahil Bandukwala is a writer and visual artist based in Mississauga and Ottawa, Ontario. She is the author of MONUMENT (Brick Books, 2022), which was shortlisted for the 2023 Gerald Lampert Award, and was selected as a Writer's Trust of Canada Rising Star in 2023. See her work at manahilbandukwala.com. ABOUT DADDY: DADDY is a powerful look at patriarchy, intergenerational trauma, and queer desire that seeks an unravelling of systems of control to reclaim vulnerability. At once confessional, playful, and sonically meticulous, Byrne's poems seek conversation with a voice in the mind that won't quiet. Cruel father figures dissolve into leather-clad muscle daddies on popper-scented dancefloors; the pain of the past sows the seeds of a joyful exploration of queer desire. ABOUT JAKE BYRNE: Jake Byrne is the author of Celebrate Pride with Lockheed Martin (Wolsak & Wynn, 2023) and DADDY (Brick Books, 2024). In 2019, they won CV2's Foster Prize for poetry. They live in Toronto/tka:ronto.

Then an unexpected gift from her wealthy Lolo offers that chance: a long-forsaken property in Manila’s bohemian district, close to where ladies of the evening ply their trade. IF I WRITE ABOUT MY FATHER - Sheila Stewart | Society Clubhouse
Oct 6, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Toronto
Join us at Society Clubhouse for the launch of IF I WRITE ABOUT MY FATHER (Ekstasis Editions) by Sheila Stewart! ABOUT THE BOOK: What effect do fathers and faith have on a child? In If I Write About My Father, Sheila Stewart explores the daughter-father relationship drawing on reflections about her father, a Northern Irish Presbyterian minister who immigrated to Canada and joined the United Church. Her poetry uncovers the complexities of growing up as the minister’s only daughter in a family shaped by church and manse in small-town southern Ontario. Stewart braids narrative and lyric, the textures of liturgy and memory. While critiquing patriarchal weight and constraint, the work explores how a particular religious upbringing shapes thinking, the rhythms of language, and the fabric of consciousness. In this quest, the poet draws from the sensory world by walking the woods and Lake Ontario shores. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Author of three poetry collections, If I Write About My Father, The Shape of a Throat and A Hat to Stop a Train, Sheila Stewart has been writing and publishing poetry since the early 1990s. Bobby Dove at The Cameron House (Back Room) w/ Kwiat | The Cameron House
Oct 6, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Toronto
Bobby Dove (QC/MB) Country/Americana Opening set by Kwiat (MB) Pop/Soul BOBBY DOVE: Bobby Dove is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is quickly becoming a magnetic presence in the world of Country and Americana music. With a voice as powerful as their storytelling, Dove pays tribute to the golden age of Country, while crafting original, emotionally charged songs that are fresh off the heartworn highway. Bobby’s internationally acclaimed sophomore album, Hopeless Romantic(2021) includes some of the finest musicians on the Canadian roots music scene, including Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, Bazil Donovan and Jimmy Bowskill. Dove’s journey into the lore of early Country music started at The Wheel Club, a long-standing institution in their hometown of Montreal, Quebec. It was there that the budding troubadour was fortunate enough to be mentored by steel-player Bob Hill, and where Bobby picked up a variety of stringed instruments, sending them down a rabbit hole of pre-1965 honky tonk and bluegrass. “I’m not sure if Hank Williams or Hank Snow kept a mistress in Montreal or Manitoba maybe we didn’t hear about and passed some genes down, or what has possessed Bobby Dove to become like a vessel or channeler for all the great classic country music influences we so sorely miss. But this is some of the most authentically-rendered and true-to-inspiration country music you can root out, while still holding onto enough originality to hit your ears with a welcomed freshness.” – Saving Country Music (USA) Bobby Dove has given highlight performances at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest, and Winnipeg Folk Fest. Along the road, Bobby has collaborated with luminaries such as Fats Kaplin (John Prine), Mary Gauthier, Richard Thompson, Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel), and Lavender Country. Currently based in rural Manitoba, Bobby Dove is preparing to release a new full-length album, recorded with producer Aaron Goldstein (Cowboy Junkies), and is touring in 2024, with stops at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and Dauphin’s Countryfest. http://bobbydove.com KWIAT: KWIAT is a Winnipeg-based Métis Polish avant-pop artist celebrated for her genre-defying sound. Inspired by artists like Fiona Apple, and Hayley Williams, her debut music—co-produced with Hawksley Workman and mixed by George Seara—has achieved significant acclaim. Her debut single Follow The Call reached the top 10 on SiriusXM's The Indigiverse, and she earned accolades including the Women in Music Canada Honour Roll in 2023 and a spot in Billboard Canada’s Inaugural Women in Music Industry Spotlight in 2024. KWIAT has captivated sold-out audiences opening for Jim Cuddy and Sam Powell and has showcased her dynamic performances at major events like the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, Festival du Voyageur, and Pride Winnipeg. www.peaceandkwiat.com
