Figuring A Scene | National Gallery Singapore
Apr 5, 2024–Mar 23, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Discover a new perspective on exhibitions with Figuring a Scene, where we break free from traditional art history norms. Here, we believe exhibitions hold intrinsic significance beyond historical or societal contexts. Emotions, imagination, and sensory experiences take center stage in our understanding of art, defining how we make sense of the world around us.
Explore the process of creating art and the meaning of materials within specific settings, akin to the unfolding of a narrative or drama. As you navigate the exhibition, connect with your own experiences with the artworks on display.
Join us on a journey that encourages a deeper appreciation for the intricate process of art creation. Engage in thought-provoking questions about the production and reception of art, the collective staging of the exhibition scene, and the interconnectedness between artistic forms and the broader realms of history and everyday life.
Figuring a Scene presents different instances where elements from nature become signs that help us perceive and grasp social forms. These instances come via six episodes - shadow, fruit, fire, air, wax, and city.

Uncanny Cuteness GROUP EXHIBITION | Tang Contemporary Art Singapore
Nov 2–Dec 7, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Cuteness has emerged as a pervasive aesthetic in our daily lives, transforming from a simple visual quality into a significant cultural force. Its integration into artistic expression has evolved remarkably, expanding beyond traditional mediums like installations, sculptures, and paintings to embrace contemporary forms such as designer toys and museum retail spaces. This aesthetic naturally infiltrates various cultural domains, from industrial design and household items to fashion, digital platforms, and political messaging, transcending conventional artistic boundaries of time, place, and historical movements. Artists across disciplines are drawn to cuteness for its unique ability to penetrate social barriers and create meaningful connections. It’s influence extends across diverse spheres of global cultural practices, ranging from mass culture to biological evolution theories, demonstrating how this seemingly simple aesthetic serves as a powerful tool for addressing complex societal issues. This universal appeal allows artists to engage with profound questions about human nature, social relationships, and cultural dynamics.
In Uncanny Cuteness: Aesthetic Dynamics and Social Impact in Contemporary Art, participating artists harness this disarming charm to explore fundamental questions of identity, examine global consumption patterns, and offer their distinctive interpretations of endearing aesthetics. The exhibition brings together established and emerging artists including Arkiv Vilmansa, Dennis Osadebe, Jonathan Hadipranata, Ruo-Hsin Wu, Tania Marmolejo, Yasuhito Kawasaki, Yokoteen, and Mie Olise kjærgaard, each contributing their unique perspective to this dialogue.Through their works, these artists demonstrate how cuteness can be wielded as a powerful medium to explore themes of diversity, inclusion, and global economic relationships, while examining art's complex role within capitalist structures. The exhibition reveals how this seemingly simple aesthetic can illuminate profound perspectives on identity, global commerce, and art's position in contemporary society, challenging traditional notions of aesthetic appeal and cultural significance.

Important Notice This programme is open to members of the National Library Board, Singapore. Please ensure you have your myLibrary username on hand before proceeding with the registration. If you do not have a myLibrary username, you can create one here: https://account.nlb.gov.sg About the Programme This workshop is all about inherited wisdom - the useful and illuminating things you have learnt from other people - that deserve to be shared. Facilitated by artist Natalia Tan, you will dive deep into your memory, pick one story to tell, and collaborate to express it through micro art and massive art. The pieces created will form part of a larger artwork and be displayed in our upcoming exhibition, celebrating connection, continuity, and collective memory. About the artist Natalia Tan is a textile and community artist, educatory, and co-founder of the Singapore Eco Arts Festival. She studied contemporary weaving in Japan between 2014 and 2019, and was selected for a scholarship and weaving residency in Osaka to further her exploration of Saori weaving in 2019. An active advocate of sustainability and socially-engaged artmaking, she weaves and co-creates with people using salvaged waste materials and found objects. In her art facilitation practice, she guides participants to gather inspiration from their personal histories and desires to tell stories through textile art. About CANVAS/S: Tales as New as Time Take a fresh look at an old tale with our exhibition series CANVAS/S: Tales as New as Time. With art installations that respond to the story of “The Two Widows” as depicted in Singapore Children’s Favourite Stories, come experience the exhibition happening at Jurong Regional Library. Each iteration of CANVAS/S is proudly helmed by local artists or collectives. At the exhibition, get up close and personal with the artworks and discover more about the techniques and thought process behind the art. Looking for a deeper experience? Sign up for the various engagement activities and exhibition tours led by the artists themselves!
